CNN Falls for Hoax Declaring Singapore Founder Dead

CNN’s breaking news Twitter feed, followed by 25.1 million people, falsely reported the death of former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew Tuesday evening, citing a “government website.” The tweet was deleted a couple hours later, but Mediaite nabbed a screenshot:

CNN followed up with:

The hoax was started by a website with the Prime Minister Office’s logo; the website has no connection to the PMO, which is investigating. Lee is severely ill, but further reporting determined him to be alive at press time.

CNN reported on the snafu on its own website Wednesday:

CNN published that news on its breaking news Twitter account before updating the account to quote Singapore’s government spokesman dismissing the news as a hoax. The network has since deleted the original tweet.
