Dick Cheney Proud of His ‘Darth Vader’ Truck Art
That former Vice President Dick Cheney has been compared to the famous Star Wars villain Darth Vader isn’t new. During the month of September 2011 — when he published his book In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir — Jay Leno, Jon Stewart and ABC News all made the same joke.
Yet Cheney has owned the joke all along, and his recent Wall Street Journal profile is no exception. Talking Points Memo pointed out the relevant bit in the interview’s very beginning, when the Wyoming resident tells WSJ writer Patrick O’Connor, “Remind me to show you the back of my truck.”
Outside the rodeo arena, he took a moment to show off the latest feature on his Ford F-350 Super Duty truck, a Darth Vader trailer-hitch cover, a nod to his alter-ego from the Bush days.
“Darth Vader,” he said, smiling. “I’m rather proud of that.”
Whether Cheney is proud of the cover, his co-opting of the joke originally meant as an insult, or the original joke itself remains to be seen. Either way, he totally owns it.
