Education Dept Apologizes for ‘Insensitive’ Tweet Quoting Bridesmaids
You know that thing where people in government like to have fun with memes and such? Yeah, most people don’t appreciate that. And today the Department of Education had to apologize for sending out a tweet with a line taken from the movie Bridesmaids. Yeah.
The official Twitter account for FAFSA sent out the following tweet to encourage young people to fill out their federal student aid applications. It did not have the desired effect.
Obviously, not everyone took kindly to the government making light of their financial woes, and a spokeswoman for the Department of Education issued an apology this morning.
“We apologize for this insensitive Twitter post, which flies in the face of our mission of opening doors of opportunity for every student. It was an ill-conceived attempt at reaching students through social media. We are reviewing our process for approving social media content to ensure it reflects the high standards we expect at the U.S. Department of Education.”
Yeah, next time it’ll be a variation on the Futurama “shut up and take my money” line.
