On Sunday, Houston police sergeant Steve Perez drowned in his vehicle en route to work — as he was on his way to assist during the storm.
At a Tuesday news conference, Houston officials confirmed Perez’s death. Police chief Art Acevedo was overcome with emotion while speaking about the fallen officer.
“Steve was one of the sweetest people I’ve met in this department…because he was a sweet, gentle public servant.”
Acevedo spoke about how Perez’s wife and father-in-law implored him not to go into work Sunday. But Sgt. Perez, according to Acevedo, said “We’ve got work too do,” and reported for duty.
