Following a combative White House press briefing this afternoon featuring Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders struggling to justify the ever-changing positions from the White House over President Donald Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey, CNN took the spokesperson to task.
Immediately after the briefing ended, CNN anchor Brooke Baldwin asked in disbelief if Sanders actually said “that she doesn’t understand why this is all so complicated.”
“She did,” CNN political director David Chalian responded. “She said,’It’s very straight forward. The president fired the FBI director. It’s simple.’ No, it’s not simple because that’s the man that’s overseeing the investigation into his campaign’s ties with Russia.” He added that “it’s totally complicated!”
Later in the conversation, correspondent Jim Sciutto tore directly into Sanders and the White House.
“The account she gave is false and contradictory,” he noted. “We have to say that, in those in very clear terms. That’s not an opinion.”
He continued, “Let’s just remember what is on the record. In fact, on paper. The president’s letter dismissing Comey on Monday says I have accepted the recommendation of the attorney general and the deputy attorney general. Those are the president’s words on paper.”
