Queen Latifah Stands By Jussie Smollett: Until I See Some Proof, ‘I’m Going With Him’
Queen Latifah says she plans to stick by Jussie Smollett amid reports of evidence from Chicago police that he staged his own hate crime.
“Until somebody can show me some proof otherwise, I’m going with him,” Queen Latifah told Zainab Salbi on Yahoo News’ Through Her Eyes.
“Because the guy I’ve seen has always been someone who cares about people, who cares about others, whose very kind and whose always cool and sweet, that’s the guy I know,” she added.” So until I can see some definitive proof, which I haven’t seen yet, then, you know, I gotta go with him.”
The Chicago-Sun Times reports Smollett has been charged with disorderly conduct for allegedly filing a false police report, a felony that could land him up to three years in jail.
Judge John Lyke, who imposed a $100,000 bail, said if the allegations against Smollett are true, they are “utterly outrageous.” Smollett posted bail, turned over his passport, and went to a rescheduled taping of Empire.
Smollett initially reported to the police that he was attacked at 2:00 A.M. by two men who screamed homophobic slurs and “This is MAGA country!” in downtown Chicago. Police say he hired two brothers and paid them $100 to buy the materials, including a rope to put around his neck, for the attack.
He also paid them with a backdated check for $3,600.
