Three people connected to the Paul family have been indicted by the Justice Department on conspiracy charges over a purported bribery scheme carried out in 2011.
Four years ago, Michele Bachmann‘s Iowa state campaign co-chair Kent Sorenson made a surprise switch and came out strong for Ron Paul‘s campaign. Bachmann and her campaign manager said at the time that Sorenson had been bribed to flip, but Sorenson denied it.
Well, today Jesse Benton (currently the head of the pro-Rand Paul America’s Liberty PAC), John Tate, and Dimitrios Kesari were all charged in connection with a bribery the DOJ says actually took place.
Not only did they allegedly pay Sorenson over $70,000 (and concealed it) to jump ship to Paul, but they encouraged him to lie when asked.
Benton, a longtime Rand Paul aide, is facing charges on conspiracy, obstruction, submitting false campaign finance reports, and lying to the FBI.
The elder Paul reacted earlier today, remaking on the suspicious timing:
I am extremely disappointed in the government’s decision. I think the timing of this indictment is highly suspicious given the fact that the first primary debate is tomorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those involved. I will not be commenting further on this matter at this time.
