It's no great secret that large corporations still have to figure out social media. A recent study found that most Fortune 100 companies don't get Twitter, and smaller companies have similar issues. Even when they're not buttoned-up and unresponsive, they're routinely outmatched by smaller, chattier Tweeters. We put together seven surprising comparisons between deep-pocketed major companies and their offbeat Twitter competitors. Burger King vs. Alan Colmes Winner: Colmes, with 3,821 followers. Ford Motor Company vs. porn star Joanna Angel Winner: Ford, with 19,338 followers -- but it's close. The main service rep for UPS vs. the Xerox machine from Mad Men Winner: The Xerox Machine, with 943 followers. Fake Mad Men accounts are all the rage on Twitter, but: this is an account for the Xerox machine. Which isn't an inside joke or a major part of the series or anything, but is just a Xerox machine in the office on the show. Starbucks plays the social media game well -- Ad Age named them the #6 social media brand of 2008 -- but Sockington has them licked: he has more than twice as many followers. So: giving away diamonds (or at least discounts on them) is half as valued by Society as telling them where they can find one truck that sells pies in San Francisco? Two points: first, the last Tweance was a one-day event which occurred on October 30th, and the account hasn't Tweeted since then, so it's remarkable. Second, Salesforce's main business is "cloud computing," so you'd expect a stronger web presence. Maybe it should employ the ghost of William Shakespeare? >>>Next page: Finally!
