It is likely that Mateen would have been able to legally buy weapons. MSNBC reports that there are some indications that Mateen had “radical influences” toward Jihadist ideology. The father of the alleged shooter told reporters that this has nothing to do with religion.
“This had nothing to do with religion … but he got really angry when he saw two men kissing in downtown Miami a couple of months ago,” the father reportedly said, according to MSNBC. His father also said Mateen had a associates degree in criminal justice, and was working a security job.
Investigators are looking at his early influences, including who he has been exposed to, where he has traveled and what he has purchased recently. There are reports that this man came onto the fed’s radar three years ago. The FBI will likely take the lead looking into who he is.
