New House Speaker Elected in Unanimous Republican Vote After Weeks of Chaos
House Republicans unanimously elected a speaker of the House on Tuesday with the needed 215 votes for Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA).
Johnson was the fourth candidate put forward by Republicans after Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), and Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) all dropped out after failing to receive the needed votes.
The speaker’s chair has been manned temporarily by Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) since Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) led the revolt against former speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) more than three weeks ago.
On Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast Wednesday, Gaetz called Johnson “an honorable, righteous man who is about to take this position. He’s going to do great things for this country.”
Johnson is a MAGA Republican who supported Donald Trump’s false claims that the 2020 election was stolen. According to NBC News, Johnson “led the amicus brief signed by more than 100 House Republicans in support of a Texas lawsuit seeking to invalidate the 2020 election results in four swing states won by Biden: Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.”
During Johnson’s post-nomination press conference Tuesday, an ABC reporter was booed and heckled by Republicans when she asked about his efforts to overturn the election.
