‘Please Stop Being a Moron!’ Ben Shapiro and Daily Wire Colleague Exchange Veiled Jabs Over Lindsay Clancy Case
Daily Wire hosts Ben Shapiro and Matt Walsh exchanged veiled jabs this week after Walsh went viral for his claim that postpartum depression and mental illness were not key factors in the Lindsay Clancy case. Clancy, a Massachusetts mother, is currently on trial for allegedly murdering her three young children.
On Monday, Walsh weighed in on the case, writing, “A lot of people aren’t going to want to hear this but much of the ‘depression’ that parents (and not just moms) suffer after child birth is due not so much to hormones but to the fact that children, especially babies, are demanding and difficult and require us to subordinate our own needs and desires for their sake. The more selfish you are, the more of an adjustment it’s going to be.”
Clancy’s defense lawyers are arguing before the court that she heard voices, was over-medicated, and suffered from postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings.
Walsh’s tweet sparked an outcry on social media, and he subsequently added, “This is especially true of Lindsay Clancy, who in fact had more far help, and was getting far more medical and psychiatric attention, than the average person. But ultimately nobody could solve her ‘depression’ because its real source was a selfish hatred of her children. No drug can treat that. It can make things worse, though.”
Shapiro addressed the Clancy case on his Tuesday show, calling the horrific killings a tragedy and adding that the “internet is doing what it always does, turning a horrific tragedy into a dumb morality play. The hot takes that you’re seeing everywhere are pretty much all garbage.”
“It’s the difference between a voice talking to you and telling you to murder people and you being severely depressed because of hormonal changes. So you’re seeing online a lot of women saying, when I had postpartum depression, I felt the same thing she did. I promise you, you didn’t,” Shapiro said at one point, adding:
Even if you had the fleeting thought that you don’t like your kids, or this is annoying and I wish my kid weren’t here, that is not the same thing that happened. According to Lindsay Clancy, to Lindsay Clancy, and to the people around her saying the same thing. According to her, voices were telling her to murder her children.
So please, don’t conflate these things because that’s stupid. And for any men and a few women who are saying that postpartum depression generally is somehow lack of willpower, or that postpartum psychosis doesn’t cause people to do violent things, or that postpartum depression is because of the selfishness of modern women or something. Please, please, please, stop being a moron.
While Shapiro did not directly name Walsh in his commentary, it appeared clear Shapiro was addressing him.
For his part, Walsh hit back at “conservative influencers” attacking him, writing:
It’s quite extraordinary, though not at all surprising, that during a week when countless leftist women are openly celebrating and canonizing a monster who slaughtered her three children — one of the ugliest and most revealing moments in modern history — some conservative influencers and commentators have instead decided to spend their time directing their ire at me because I had a tweet that was slightly inartful (according to them). I would tend to think that the widespread, open, unashamed celebration of a woman who methodically executed all three of her children would be the headline here, and that woman herself, and her defenders, would be the villains of the story. But of course we live in increasingly retarded times, made all the more retarded by a commentariat that wouldn’t recognize the Actual Important Thing if it walked up and dropkicked them in the face, so here we are.
He later added, “Please take note of all the conservative influencers and commentators who are very eager to issue lectures to young right wing men and scold them for their spicy jokes and for the edgy podcasts they listen to, and yet are right now very very hesitant to deliver any rebuke to the legions of radicalized women openly celebrating a mass murderer of children. This tells everything you need to know. And when they pivot back to their breathless, theatrical denunciations of right wing males, be sure to ignore everything they say.”
