House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was asked during a Capitol Hill press conference on Tuesday how he squares having two members of the conference being accused of sexual harassment amid the fallout of Graham Platner’s recent rape allegation.

“Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Eric Garcia from The Independent. In the past two weeks, Democrats ditched Graham Plater from their ballot after sexual assault allegations,” began Garcia, adding:

Two members of the conference, Max Miller and Cory Mills, face domestic violence allegations. Why would you Republicans keep them in the conference, whereas Democrats are dropping those accused — criminally accused — of sexual harassment?

Johnson replied, “Well, the key word there is ‘allegation.’ We have a process here — the House Ethics Committee works on those things. If allegations are made, they work through a process.”

“So I’m not in the business of commenting on investigations as they’re in process, and we’ll see how that shakes out. That’s how this always works, and by the way, it’s done for R’s and D’s on both sides of the aisle,” Johnson concluded.

Rep. Max Miller (R-OH) has been embroiled in a growing scandal in Ohio, involving the daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH), from whom he is divorced. Miller’s ex-wife, Emily Moreno, has accused him of domestic abuse, accusations he has publicly denied. The ongoing back-and-forth between the couple has played out in the media and continues to rock the Ohio GOP as congressman and senator swipe at each other.

Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) was investigated in Washington, DC, for domestic assault, and an arrest warrant was even reportedly issued for him by the police, but the Trump-appointed US Attorney in DC did not sign it. Mills has also faced ethics investigations related to allegations of fraud and tax-related issues.
