Candice Bergen Dishes to Colbert About Her Date With Trump: ‘I Was Home Very Early’
On Wednesday night, Candice Bergen was asked about a date she went on with pre-President Donald Trump.
Stephen Colbert began the conversation that not only did her character Murphy Brown had gone on a date with the billionaire businessman, it was based on her own personal experience.
“Did you, Candice Bergen, go on a date with Donald Trump?” Colbert asked. “And I remind you, you’re under oath.”
“I was very young!” Bergen defended herself. “I was about 18 and- Trump and I are about the same age, or as he would point out, I’m about six months older. And it was when I was at Penn.”
She then struggled to accurately recall how their date went.
“And I remember that it was- I might have invented this because it was so perfect, but I think he was wearing a burgundy suit with a burgundy vest and a burgundy patent leather boots and was in a burgundy limousine,” Bergen told Colbert. “And so it was kind of a symphony of burgundy.”
Bergen clarified that she was “home very early.”
The Murphy Brown star explained that at the time, he was not “Donald Trump” then but just “a guy” and that he “must’ve called” her when he asked her out, but ultimately doesn’t remember.
“He’d be so insulted to hear that,” Colbert joked.
The Late Show host mentioned that she also went on a date with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
“Oh God,” Bergen reacted. “It’s like ‘The World’s Great Conservatives!”
Bergen recalled Kissinger being “highly intelligent” and “very charming.”
“Who was the better date, Trump or Kissinger?” Colbert asked.
“Kissinger,” Bergen answered.
