Ed Schultz Challenges Hillary on Trade: ‘Lots of Talking Going On, but No Straight Talk’

MSNBC host Ed Schultz challenged Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in the opening segment of The Ed Show Morning afternoon, telling her to take an actual stance on trade issues like the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and fast trade authority instead of dancing around them.

After excoriating the familiar targets (Republicans, Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell), Schultz turned to Hillary. “Meanwhile, the Democratic frontrunner for president still hasn’t taken a position on fast track or the TPP,” said Schultz, a staunch opponent of both measures. “Lots of talking going on, but no straight talk.”

“Now this is not the media manufacturing a Hillary Clinton story that might not be very good,” he said. “This is a classic example of how Hillary Clinton has not on this issue been crystal clear on where she stands on fast track, and whether she thinks Congress should be reading trade deals before they vote on them.”

After playing a clip of Clinton flack Karen Finney struggling to answer trade questions on Fox News Sunday, Schultz accused Hillary of putting her spokespeople in an unfair position. “’I’ll let her go ahead and explain all that,’” he paraphrased Finney. “Okay, when’s that coming?”

“American voters deserve to know where Hillary Clinton, or whoever else wants to be president, where they stand on fast track and the TPP. If it’s a yes or no problem for Hillary Clinton at this point, it’s going to dog her campaign for a long time.”
