Raj Shah: Hamas to Blame for Gaza Violence, ‘A Gruesome, Unfortunate Propaganda Attempt’

White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah put the blame on Hamas today in light of the news that dozens of people were killed at the Gaza border.

Approximately 50 people have been reported dead after Palestinians assembled near the Israeli border to protest the opening of the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem. As he conducted the White House press briefing, Shah told reporters that the White House was aware of this conflict, and he said Hamas was responsible when asked if Israeli forces should try to reign in the situation.

“Israel has the right to defend itself,” Shah said. “We shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that Hamas bears responsibility for the dire situation.”

The violence was a recurring topic throughout today’s briefing, and at one point, Shah was asked again whether Israel needs to accept some responsibility for mass casualty event Palestinians are currently looking at.

“As I said earlier, we believe Hamas bears the responsibility,” Shah said. “This is a gruesome and unfortunate propaganda attempt. I think the Israeli government has spent weeks trying to handle this without violence, and we find it very unfortunate.”
