Ret. Lt. General and CNN Military Analyst: Trump Shouldn’t Have Politicized Iraq Visit With Troops

Retired Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, a CNN military analyst, criticized President Donald Trump for getting political during his visit to troops in Iraq.

Hertling told Don Lemon that whenever presidents visit the troops, of course everyone gets excited, “but at the same time, what they don’t do is politicize the event, and unfortunately as we saw some of the commentary by the president today, that’s exactly what he did.”

“It puts the soldiers––truthfully, all of the military personnel––in a very bad position,” he said, “because the military has regulations against doing exactly that.”

He also took note of false statements from Trump, particularly about military paychecks.

Retired Maj. Gen. James “Spider” Marks, another CNN military analyst, said these presidential trips should be about the focus on the troops and not putting the spotlight on yourself.
