Stephen A. Smith Doubles Down on 2028 Run Chatter As He Slams Dems For Having No ‘National Voice’: ‘I Did Not Ask For This, I Don’t Want This’
Stephen A. Smith continued teasing a possible 2028 presidential run, knocking the Democratic Party for lack of a “national voice.”
Smith, host of ESPN’s First Take, has turned to politics more recently as his name has begun appearing in polls inquiring about potential 2028 nominees to take on Republicans. On a recent episode of The View, Smith declared that while he’s “not qualified” to be president, he’s confident he could beat any Democrat who would face him.
On Wednesday’s The Tonight Show, host Jimmy Fallon brought out a headline asking whether Smith can “save” the Democratic Party.
Smith said:
“Folks are nuts, number one. Number two, you know, I mean, the Democratic Party, I mean, they’re lost. They had a bad few months. We all know this. And even though there’s a lot of qualified Democrats all over the country from a local perspective — governors, mayors, stuff like that — there’s no real national voice. Enter moi. They’ve come to me. And so, I mean, I did not ask for this. I don’t want this. I happen to have a very, very, very good life, very good job. I’m good, very good.”
Smith jokingly offered an “I approve this message” in reaction to talk of him fully jumping into politics.
“I’m saying, ‘Wait a minute now. I don’t want to do this.’ But the fact that they’re talking about me this way, I must say, I approve this message,” he said.
“Have you ever been elected to student council or anything?” Fallon asked.
“Hell no,” Smith replied. “Hell no, the only thing I was the leader of, I was the leader of at my mom’s house to take out the garbage and wash the dishes twice a week.”
