Watch Trump’s Awkward Goodbye to Gary Cohn: ‘He May Be a Globalist, But I Still Like Him’
During President Donald Trump‘s cabinet on Thursday morning, he ribbed Gary Cohn in advance of the economic adviser’s imminent departure from the White House.
Trump began by previewing what he has in mind regarding his proposed tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum. “We’re going to be very fair. We’re going to be very flexible,” Trump said — though he also left things somewhat open-ended since he hinted that certain countries will be exempted from import taxes.
Cohn, who opposed the tariff idea, sat behind Trump during today’s meeting, and the president eventually acknowledged the elephant in the room.
“This is Gary Cohn’s last cabinet meeting,” Trump said. “He’s been terrific. He may be a globalist, but I still like him. He’s seriously globalist, no question, but he’s also a nationalist because he loves our country.”
Trump turned to Cohn and asked him if he loves America, which drew applause from the room. As the president continued, he said that maybe Cohn will come back to the administration someday, but he also snarked that the economic adviser is “not quite as strong on those tarriffs as we want.”
Remember, Trump said earlier this week that “everybody” wants a piece of the Oval Office.
