Rep. Boehner Chokes Up: “I’ve Spent My Whole Life Chasing The American Dream”

video

Rep. John Boehner was in Washington, D.C. as it appeared he would soon become leader of the majority of the House.

It was a joyous moment for him and those gathered, and his speech just before MidnightET was about bipartisanship. But it was also an emotional one for him, as he choked up several times.

“Let me just say this – it’s clear tonight who the winners really are, and that’s the American people,” he said at the beginning. Later, continuing with a theme of working together and doing things differently as part of a “new majority,” he said, “For far too long Washington’s been doing what’s best for Washington, not what’s best for the American people. Tonight, that begins to change.”

Then, it got emotional. “Economic freedom, individual liberty and personal responsibility. I hold these values dear because I’ve lived them. I’ve spent my whole life chasing the American dream,” said Boehner, through tears, as the crowd responded with chants of U-S-A.

Check out the full, emotional speech, from Fox News:

    lol

I’m not saying Boehner shouldn’t cry, but it was the kind of blubbering that you just had to look away because it felt like you were invading on a private moment. I don’t want to see that. Man up, Boehner!

  • The_Reasonable_Lib

We’ll see how long that lasts.

He’s crying because he knows he has to put his big boy pants on, and do something besides say”hell no”!! He knows that much of his golf days are over, and he doesn’t know how he will handle everything!! I find it very interesting to see what the repubs will do now, with the tea party breathing down their neck.

That was touching. I hope he makes good on actually reaching across the isle. Because the last time a Republican espoused bipartinship W. Bush wrecked those hopes.

Otherwise, they didn’t win today by popularity. Democrats are still more popular, as are their motives. And if Republicans were so interested in solutions why were they the party of no? What’s with clinging to jingoistic mottos?

Do, don’t say. Something in me tells me that the Republican party is more than willing to come closer to the center. Man I hope so. Because Boehner very clearly loves the shit out of this country and it’s people.

  • Some_Dude

    Also, he was uncharacteristically non-orange.

    What the pundits don’t tell you about this map is several things;

    http://www.politico.com/2010/maps/#/House/2010

    1. Northern New Mexico, Eastern Oklahoma, Imperial County in California, eastern Utah, southwestern Texas, Broward County in Florida, and many of the whose little ‘blue spots’ on Politico’s map that went Democrat sadly have some of the highest high school drop out rates, high crime rates in their states, high depressed real estate, the most poverty, and drug and alcohol abuse, unemployment, and children born into broken homes.

  • CosmosDan

Sounds reasonable, if a little filled with platitudes. Now we’ll see what the GOP in the house are actually willing to do to make things better.

Maybe he had to cut things short because he had more checks to pass out.

    Why is he always crying?

History will derride him if the entire next two years produces no meaningful action.

Continue with the same thing that got them into office

    well then, that explains it.

Boehner usually strikes me as a ‘typical politician’. In his speech and tears, he finally struck me as someone who might lead responsibly. I’d like to see more people feel the weight of the responsibility, we are all blessed to be Americans. American exceptionalism is both a responsibility and a blessing.

Boehner’s speech, Rubio’s speech and Ferraro and Palin’s mutual respect dialogue were great election coverage moments last night.

  • redwriteblue

There are 25 million unemployed Americans that are just trying to survive this Recession let alone pursue the “American Dream” because of a Republican “Big Idea” from the early 1990′s:

  • Nachi

Like all repugnant REPUGS, little man has no concept of the “American Dream.” Nazification is his dream.

If I achieved so much be doing so little (“Hell no!”) I’d be moved to tears too.

Hopefully have an orange Speaker of the House is a good sign for Syracuse basketball team this year.
    (They’re called the Orange.)
