FNC Analyst Calls Out 60 Minutes for Palin Obsession, Ignoring Reid

video

What happens when a planned leak of a salacious detail (Sarah Palin couldn’t remember Biden’s name!) gets shadowed by a more salacious tidbit (Harry Reid referring to Obama’s non-negro dialect)? Viewers question your reasoning behind the piece. FNC’s Eric Shawn noticed that 60 Minutes aired an exclusive interview with Game Change authors Mark Halperin and John Heilemann last night, and Palin was effectively the focus of the piece, with no mention of the Reid comment.

Sources close to the marketing and promotional campaign of Game Change have told Mediaite that the leak of the Palin story was a calculated move to get the media attention for the book. But as advance copies were released, numerous details super-ceded this, which somehow and effectively rendered the 60 Minutes story old before it aired.

The Sarah Palin “O’Biden” story was old news as well, given she wrote about it in her own book. And even Schmidt admitted that Palin brought McCain more votes that he would have otherwise gotten.

I didn’t watch the 60 minutes piece; did Anderson Cooper host it?

And how silly of 60 minutes to ignore the whole Reid affair anyway, it only makes them and CBS look like they are continuing a war against Palin (which of course they are).

  • sarainitaly

I can’t believe how obsessed everyone is with the SOOOO minor Palin stories (that were old news) and not talking about the Clinton and Edwards affair dirt. Everywhere I look the Palin story is the hot topic, and nary a peep on Clinton or Edwards. O’Biden vs. sex…. weird. Did 60 Minutes discuss them? I didn’t see it.

  • roxsteady

Who cares if she mentioned it in her book? People like me who would never read a book written by someone who doesn’t read just wasn’t going to happen. I’m curious though, did she explain why she kept confusing their names? I mean, they don’t rhyme. I still think she’s obsessed with him. I can’t say that I blame her though. It’s a woman thing!

  • roxsteady

By the way, that Clinton and Edwards stuff has been all over the tv maching and blogs today. I guess you missed it.

  • ChrisNH

’60 Minutes’ has become a laughable caricature. Elite, liberal silver-haired fossils trying to ‘force’ a particular news cycle or squash another. Once upon a time, the show earned and got respect; no longer.

But then, who will call out Fox Not News Channel for obsessing over Reid but ignoring the Palin trainwreck?

Here’s an interesting post from Greg Sargent of the Plumline.

“The claim about Clinton’s explosive remarks came on page 218 of Game Change:

The day after Iowa, he phoned Kennedy and pressed for an endorsement, making the case for his wife. But Bill then went on, belittling Obama in a manner that deeply offended Kennedy. Recounting the conversation later to a friend, Teddy fumed that Clinton had said, A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee.

The remark is not in quotes. And the authors’ note from Mark Halperin and John Heilemann states explicitly their rationale for choosing not to put dialog in quotes:

Where dialog is not in quotes, it is paraphrased, reflecting only a lack of certainly on the part of our sources about precise wording, not about the nature of the statements.

This is kind of amazing. By the authors’ own stated guidelines, this might not have been the “precise wording” Clinton used. Yet it has been the basis for a huge amount of media discussion all the same, with some suggesting racism on Clinton’s part.”

To be clear, it’s very possible that Clinton did say something along these lines. It seems very likely that he did belittle Obama. But come on: In cases like these, when people are hinting at racism, the precise wording is everything. And in this case, the whole claim is based on an anonymous source’s recollection that someone who has now passed away told him or her that Clinton said something like this.”

Personally, it wouldn’t surprise me if Clinton said that either, considering his remarks about Jesse Jackson winning South Carolina. (I didn’t vote for Jackson by the way. I felt it was important to mention that because many people assume that all African Americans voted for Jackson. We didn’t.)

I do find it odd that a quote isn’t in quotation marks? Apparently Reid’s comments were and he admitted that. I wonder if Clinton will respond?

  • Ted

Fox and Foxaholics are distressed because 60 Min made Palin look like…Palin. Huh, go figure.

  • roxsteady

Well, now that Palin is reportedly going to be a fox news contributor, she’ll be able to respond in kind. She’ll fit right in. Remember what Steve Schmidt said on 60 Minutes-

“There were numerous instances that she said things that were — that were not accurate that, ultimately, the campaign had to deal with. And that opened the door to criticism that she was being untruthful and inaccurate. And I think that that is something that continues to this day,” he said.

    Exactly!

  • TfT

How many reporters did AP have reading this book to fact check it? I think they had 10 or 11 on Palin’s book; anyone know how many AP reporters read and fact checked this book?

  • libra blue

What a misogynistic interview this was! You can’t really fault Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, Anderson didn’t bother asking about Reid’s comments. Instead he focused on the two individuals he trashed during the election: Clinton and Palin.

  • roxsteady

Now, here’s a lefty blogger who agrees with many of you Palin defenders.

    Alex Koppelman from Salon.com

In Politico, Mike Allen turned this anecdote and the release into a full story. And it got pickup elsewhere as well.

But it wasn’t exactly a scoop, or even as embarrassing to Palin as one might have thought. In fact, as you can see in the image included below, Palin herself told the tale in her own book, “Going Rogue.”

He attached a screen shot or screen grab of the passge from the actual book. Since many of you read her book, I didn’t bother attaching that text. He goes on to say:

Everyone wants to sell their book, and that’s understandable; but this particular tactic seems a little dishonest, and the people who’ve run with it as a big story since seem just a little lazy.

Liberals are capable of looking objectively at the facts. I couldn’t agree with him more. Again, I have my own guess as to why Palin kept putting the names together but, the revelation was something I remembered from the debate. They weren’t revealing anything new here. Yet, look how the all of the media is treating this. This is not jorunalism!

Right again because there’s also this, from another lefty blogger, Blue Texan of Firedoglake:

Senate Majority Leader was Affiliated with White Supremacist Group
By: Blue Texan Monday January 11, 2010 10:30 am

“Pictured: Trent Lott with “the right kind of people.”
Former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS), that is.

Thomas Edsall revealed that Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott had appeared as the keynote speaker at a 1992 meeting of the CCC in Greenwood, Mississippi. In the article, Edsall cited an issue of The Citizens Informer that featured a large photograph of Senator Lott at a CCC conference and quoted him as telling attendees that “we need more meetings like this.” According to the Informer, Lott asserted that “the people in this room stand for the right principles and the right philosophy. Let’s take it in the right direction and our children will be the beneficiaries.”

CCC leaders revealed that Lott had spoken to them on more than one occasion [note: five times]; that his syndicated column regularly ran in The Citizens Informer, and that his uncle, a member of the Council’s Executive Board, called him an “honorary member.”

When someone discovers that Harry Reid is a) chummy with racist hate groups and b) has a deplorable voting record on civil rights — please speak up and speak up loudly.

Otherwise, the GOP needs to STFU with this “Harry Reid is just like Trent Lott” BS

librablue: This episode last night will really help with CNN and AC reputation as “doing real journalism”! HAHA

Anderson is toast; no journalism, no balance, no facts…..just another CNN/AC hit piece on Palin under the logo of CBS and 60 minutes. Watch his ratings tank even further after this.

How embarrassing for all of them; trashing Palin over an old-news story while ignoring the racism of the democrat leader of the SEnate. CNN/CBS should be so proud of themselves.

You would think their dismal ratings would clue them in…

  • Knowledge_Is_Power

I watched the 60 Minutes report last night with Anderson and had to just laugh. It was nothing but a smear campaign against Palin pure and simple. 99% of it was about her with a small portion going to Hillary. Anderson asked about nothing else in the book and did not press them to provide any facts for what they were claiming.

In the book they trash everyone but Obama. HMM, wonder why!? They even bring up the old rumor that Cindy McCain was having an affair yet did not say one word at all of the supposed rumor of the Obama affair. Yet again I say HMMM!?

Guess it shows who’s a** they are really kissing, CBS, CNN and Cooper himself.

  • TfT

The 60 minute hit piece on Palin will hopefully be a topic of conversation tonight on the O’Reilly factor with Palin in her first appearance as a contributor. Cooper should be embarrassed by his own ignorance but alas, he works for CNN and propagandizes for CBS so I guess embarrassment is something he doesn’t quite get.

  • http://www.nukethefridge.com MartiniShark

Of course there is one, tiny, infinitesimal detail in all of this imbalance of coverage. Sarah Palin does not currently hold an elected office, and Harry Reid is kind of a little more empowered.

I do not understand all of this voting record blather when the subject is the spoken word. For years now we have been lectured on what is correct language and what is racist. Harry is a leader in the party that has held itself up as the paragon of racial politics — they know better than the right what is and is not racist. This is why Reid’s comments were so offensive and why all the apologists are so laughable. The “he’s 70 and it is generational” defense is a crock. He’s near the top of the party dictating the language to us so he damn well better know what is acceptable. If he has a hard time with that then any one else should be granted the same.

fixnews oh sorry foxnews asking or telling other outlets to be fair and balanced is so laughable especially coming from rabid right winger jon scott.. foxnews = phony and biased we distort u abide

You’re right Lou. FNC correctly pointed out how “60 Minutes” ignored a story, but because it’s FOX, we shouldn’t pay attention. It’s really a great way to ignore news which is inconvenient. “FNC reported it… I’ll ignore it, so I don’t have to confront things I don’t want to think about.” Nice.

But one quick follow up… Jon Scott is a “rabid right winger?” Can you provide proof? Of course, it wasn’t Scott who made the point, it was Eric Shawn. But eh, I’m not surprised facts aren’t that important.

  • J Baustian

Ha. Someone wrote, “Once upon a time 60 Minutes was a respected….”

Yes, but not since at least 1980,
