Keith Olbermann Has Some Strong Words for Bill Simmons (Update)

It’s been an interesting 24 hours for MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann. He let his sense of humor see the light of day on last night’s Daily Show Chatroulette satire, and now he’s already got another notch in the belt of being more down to earth than evidence sometimes suggests.

The target this time is ESPN’s Bill Simmons – a.k.a. The Sports Guy – and his far-reaching Tiger-Woods’s-Comeback-is-Like-Muhammed-Ali’s column that went up on Wednesday on ESPN.com. Update: Simmons responds!

Keith’s response was posted on hist Major League Baseball-supported blog:

I promised no politics here and I stick to it. But I never said anything about never mentioning other sports, although I think I’ll start that rule about a paragraph from now. If you’d like to read the most poorly-informed conclusion I’ve come across in sports media this year, you have your link. Proceed with caution. In short, it is the contention that the comeback of Tiger Woods will be more difficult than the one Muhammad Ali faced in the 1960′s. If the writer can let me know when Woods is punitively drafted by the military even though he is about eight years older than almost all the other draftees, I’ll begin to take him seriously. In the interim I am again left to marvel how somebody can rise to a fairly prominent media position with no discernible insight or talent, save for an apparent ability to mix up a vast bowl of word salad very quickly.

Holy crap, this has me giddy. Every now and then, a part of me briefly remembers that the Sportscenter I grew up watching before school featured Mr. Olbermann as the head honcho. Pit him against Simmons and that camp of online thinkers and the Malcom Gladwell love affair? This is already a war I really would love to see. It’s almost enough to get me to watch Countdown on a Friday night.

H/t to Deadspin on the Olbermann post.

> Update: Simmons just tweeted this. Wow – game on.

KO, please know the feeling is mutual. You’re my worst case scenario for my career in 12 yrs: a pious, unlikable blowhard who lives alone.

I’m furious that my Tiger column distracted America from a detailed and only mildly creepy case for Johnny Orsino’s Hall of Fame candidacy.

    Regarding Keith Olbermann-

” …I am again left to marvel how somebody can rise to a fairly prominent media position with no discernible insight or talent, save for an apparent ability….”

    to be a hatemonger.

I’m not a huge fan of Sports Guy but he actually makes a decent argument as to why Tiger is facing a tougher comeback. In his typical fashion, Olbermann resorts to ad hominem attacks rather than actually addressing the argument in question. I read Ketih’s comment and then scanned through Simmons’ article and thought it was, at the very least, a legitimate argument and not something to just be dismissed.

Simmons never said that the reason for Tiger’s exile was worse than Ali, just that his comeback is going to be tougher.

  • Barney

“Holy crap, this has me giddy.”

Jesus..you probably wank yourself silly during the “World’s Worstest Person in the History of the Universe” segments

  • Johnny M

This pretty much sums up every debate Ive seen between a left wing nut and anyone from moderate to right wing (think Bayh, H. Clinton to Beck, Rush)… I dont agree with Simmons entirely, although he at least puts together a reasonable case to dissect (the media circus around Woods will be insane).

    Here’s the typical cycle:
    1) Read the initial point of view.
2)Attack the individual with meaningless personal attacks.
3)Dont attempt to rebut the points made in the first place.

All this is missing is the useless claim of racism to complete the circle that Olbermann has mastered.

  • Olby Sucks

“a pious, unlikable blowhard who lives alone.”

    Yep, that’s keefy!

Olbermann has nothing. No point, no intellect and not even an ounce of likability. His entire program consists of calling people racists. thats it. And the idea of him not bringing politics into it? BS.

To quote Kieth himself in the middle of the paragraph.

    “I am again Left”

  • OxyCon

What the hell is MLB doing affiliating themselves with the devisive, crazed far left lunatic Olbermann?
The only people who like him are the few idiots who still watch MessNBC, who happen to be at the very fringe of American society.
You know…people like Amy Bishop and registered Democrat John Patrick Bedell.

  • OxyCon

You’re so right Adam. Olbermann likes to sit on his thrown and call everyone that disagrees with him (most of the country at this point) a racist.
Well it turns out that I found a video of a beclowned Olbnermann making racist Indain jokes ala Joe Biden:

@Barney – Just to clarify, my giddiness is probably up closer to the excitement of a good hockey fight. Something’s brewing, and the gloves are off now. These are two sports writers/anchors from whom I learned about sports reporting in my younger days, but they are certainly cartoons of what they both used to be (one a lot more than the other). Still, they both invoke reactions – support and anger – and the fallout to me will be fascinating to watch. To me, that’s media theater at it’s finest.

Now let me see, this is a thread about Keith Olbermann and Bill Simmons. It isn’t a thread about Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh.

Look who it is, that guy with the obsession. Now let’s look at this line, “left wing nut and anyone from moderate to right wing (think Bayh, H. Clinton to Beck, Rush)…”

Now, did he say who was who and who was where? Nope! So, it seems the ‘obsessed one’ has assumed. And we all know what they say when you assume.

You make an a** out of yourself. Oh, and I also like the way you pick a fight with somebody that posted something 3 and a half hours ago. Way to go tough guy!

  • ksec

I like Olbermann. So fuck off.

  • puck30

I have to agree with Simmons, Tiger will face a much tougher comeback, because of this. With Ali it came down to a one on one opponent. He had to beat that one guy in the ring in the course of at the most, an hour.

Tiger will also have to compete against a field of opponents over a four day stretch. The pressure will be lot, no doubt.

And another reason would be that Ali was a cause celeb because the tide was turning in the view on the war, he was seen as a hero by many for standing up to the government. Tiger was a player, who cheated big time on his wife. He was a media creation that happen to play a mean game of golf. Now, he can’t fall back on the media to prop him up.

So I do think Mr. Olbermann is offbase (shall we say) on this one.

  • the real john t

Tiger Woods could walk away from golf right now and not have to worry. He’s the first billionaire pro athelete. The thing it boils down to is golg needs Tiger Woods more than Tiger Woods needs golf.

I’m not the one who came on here and tried to steer things into something about Beck & Limbaugh. Which always seems to be one of your favorite ploys. I try to stay on topic.

I’m not the one who a problem with Beck or Limbaugh or sheep in a dump or all those people you talked about last week. As you see I have said my peace in my post at 12:13. You come on here and attack somebody who posted 3 & half hours ago. And you pick a fight with a woman who said something nice about a person who lives alone.

And this is off topic, but the shelter I volunteer at we have many people show up that live alone. Some because they might have had a spouse die or whatever. And they adopt a pet and it brightens their lives. So whoever the person Michelle was talking about that lives with a cat, I don’t see anything wrong with that.

Maybe you don’t like pets, thats your choice.

Yeah, but I don’t think you realize what I’m saying. You might want to do some research, since Tiger hasn’t been playing the crowds at the tournaments have dropped off, the viewers on TV has dropped off. Like I said, do some research if you want to talk about something seriously.

  • puck30

You said Golf needs Tiger Woods more then he needs them. But his private life doesn’t matter. So when he comes back you will be okay with him cheating on his wife and kids.

Because it’s his private life. So it doesn’t matter to you that Tiger comes back, plays golf, cheats on his wife, messes his kids minds up because daddy is never home cause he’s slumin’ somewhere.

    Let me get this straight.

So your train of thought here is. A good role moto for kids is become good at what you do, get married, have kids, and then cheat like hell on them. And if anybody asks you, just say it’s my private life.

This pretty much sums up every debate Ive seen between a left wing nut and anyone from moderate to right wing (think Bayh, H. Clinton to Beck, Rush)…

Okay, I’m not sure if you’re playing semantics games… or you REALLY don’t get it. I’ll explain again, line by line, just in case you’re really aren’t understanding:

“This pretty much sums up every debate…”

This, referring to KO’s personal attacks on Simmons, as explained in the following comment (from the same post):

    Here’s the typical cycle:
    1) Read the initial point of view.
2)Attack the individual with meaningless personal attacks.
3)Dont attempt to rebut the points made in the first place.

“…Ive seen between a left wing nut and anyone from moderate to right wing…”

“I’ve seen” refers to the previously mentioned tactic… “left wing nut” refers to the person using the tactic, and “moderate to right wing” is the person on the other side of the debate.

“(think Bayh, H. Clinton to Beck, Rush)”

Refers to “and anyone from moderate to right wing” portion of the comment. Bayh, Clinton, Beck, and Rush, are members of the “moderate to right wing” group, with KO CONTINUING to be the reference point for “left wing nut.”

    Get it?

Here’s how it could have been written… see if this helps:
“This pretty much sums up every debate I’ve ever seen between a left-wing nut and anyone from a moderate to a right-winger. It doesn’t matter, but to a left-wing nut, like Olbermann, even moderate Democrats like Bayh and H. Clinton deserve the same venom and attack as members of the right, like Beck and Limbaugh. Unless they walk in lock-step with an identical left-wing ideology, they will ignore the initial point of view, attack the individual with meaningless personal attacks, all the while failing to rebut the points made in the first place.”

    Hope this helps.

    puck30 says:

Oh okay, I don’t know. John ‘T’ told me to go to ‘dollars dump’ , I put it in the search and that was at the top of the page. I thought maybe it had something to do with Keith Olbermann since that is what this thread is all about and other posters have said Keith posts there.

    My Bad.

Well… you were talking to puck30 about golf… so not that.

But at March 6, 2010 at 1:07 am, you said:

Are you capable of reading or comprehending anything you read? This is what Johnny M wrote. Do you see “left wing nut ” mentioned there?

And to that, I responded at March 6, 2010 at 1:25 am

I was wondering if that explanation helped you. (I assume it did, because you dropped the subject right afterwards)

You said YOU did research about the game of golf. You said in your research about the game of golf that it wouldn’t survive without Tiger Woods, and you also said “the viewers on TV has dropped off. Like I said, do some research if you want to talk about something seriously.”

SO! Since you were (as you claimed to be) Mr. Research about the game of golf. I asked a ‘VERY SIMPLE QUESTION’ about the origin. I even gave you clues.

You can’t answer the simple question, so instead of saying I don’t know the simple question that you asked even though I have stated I have done research about the game. You result to name calling.

So we can state that Mr. Research doesn’t know the simple answer to the simple question about the origin of modern day golf that Tiger Woods plays at and has won at twice! And you said you did research, HA!

Damn! I was just looking at the greens fees for that course on their website. WOW! are they cheap in October!

I might have to head over there, that would be one heck of a rush to play that course.

    You play Golf?

  • MrGlennBovineKoldys

    Yes, Phuck3d.

Mini-golf must be accessible to your level of income. And also a ride on the bumper cars?

How is that “hot rod” of your pig wife you like to ride around on?

No, I’m not Johnny M, either. I can just… um… read. So it wasn’t tough to see what he was saying.

It is kind of stupid to try and translate someone else’s comment, especially someone you have no idea who it is.

Really? Why’s that? You said he said something he didn’t (ie: a translation or interpretation). I disagreed, and provided my own take. Is that a problem?

  • puck30

Did you or did you not say the game needs tiger woods more then he needs them? Did you or did you not say “since Tiger hasn’t been playing the crowds at the tournaments have dropped off”? Sounds like a death knell to me.

And now I’m olby sucks? When do you start calling me Ashley?

So you can’t answer the question about the origin of modern day golf. Okay that’s done. You don’t know.

Then since you have stated that you have researched attendence figures, show us the attendence breakdown of the years in question?

And I find it hard to believe you because if we are to go by the ‘Majors’ which are played between April and August. And Tiger had his troubles around Thanksgiving. How can you compaire what has not happened?

But the first tournament he does play in will be big no doubt.

BTW: Mr. Research since you know everything about Tiger Woods, How many ‘Masters’ has he won?

We have a ton of par 3s out here in PA. I just play for the fun of it. I did get to play at Baltusrol in Springfield, New Jersey when I was a kid. I grew up two towns away and use to sneak on the course on ‘Caddy Day’ cause I knew some of the Caddies that worked there. The U.S. Open gets played there every few years. It was fun.

  • Cecelia

I thought Olbermann lived with Katy Tur.

  • same2u

You should know Cecelia. And if you don’t, one of the Kluckers that read the sleazy OlbermannWatch blog or Page 6 should be able to tell you.

  • Johnny M

Well, that was entertaining… make a comment, go out for the evening, and come back to see a bunch of arguments about it!!

To clarify, Im Not Blue was correct, and the Real John T was trying to spin something odd out of comment to fit whatever agenda he is spewing. Bayh, H. Clinton represented moderate Dems that have gotten ridiculed by the likes of Olbermann despite agreeing with him more than the majority of the time…you could add Maddow/Stupak to that list too. If you disagree, you will be attacked with the same personal attackes if you are anywhere right of them on the meter…its tiresome and predictable.

Obviously its a lefty political show so he needs to create hard opinions in order to interest his audience (although it could be shown that his opinions are uninteresting and not gaining an audience). But stupid attacks and hyperbole (“most poorly informed conclusion this year”) are ridiculous and for informative viewers it makes him come across insane.

To me, that’s media theater at it’s finest

As someone who played organized hockey as a youth, and still enjoys getting out on the ice with friends…I think hockey fights are completely idiotic…and that’s the reason I cannot stomach the NHL. I had never heard of this Simmons previously…and I am quite sure I’m not alone. As far as Olbermann is concerned..he adds absolutely nothing to the political discourse and debate in this country. His reabid frothing at the mouth is ridiculous. I find him completely irrelevant to anything.

What you call “media theater” is nothing but feces flinging by a couple of emotionally underdeveloped men-children.

  • Azarkhan

    Mediaite,

Would you please put another story/picture in the top spot? I’m tired of clicking on your home page and seeing a picture of that ignorant hatemonger and leftist swine Keith Olbermann. Makes me want to hurl.

    Thanks!

  • writer

A bit off topic, but golf is believed to have originated in St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland in 1350. The ‘father’ of the American game is usually considered to be John Reid, a Scot who moved to America in 1866 and founded the St. Andrews club in 1888. As for the original topic of Olbermann attacking Simmons, that’s..wait for it…par for the course. If Keith’s opinion is different from yours, you can expect an attack.

  • puck30

Ding! You got it Bro! with the old course at St Andrews. I was going with the 1500′s. The earliest written evidence (for modern golf) was a license issued in 1552, which permitted the community to rear rabbits on the links and “play at golf, at St. Andrews.

But there’s evidence going back to the 12th century, even going back to Roman Times. So that’s why I went with ‘Modern Day’. Where everybody could disagree with the dates. Everybody agrees with St. Andrews.

And I don’t think it’s off topic. Tiger Woods plays golf.

  • writer

That long ago, the dates get a little fuzzy (zoeller). When golf first started, the king banned it because it was ‘distracting’ the youth. So lots of times it was being played, but no one wanted it known.

  • silkworm

In the interim I am again left to marvel how somebody can rise to a fairly prominent media position with no discernible insight or talent, save for an apparent ability to mix up a vast bowl of word salad very quickly.

That, Sir, explains you entire career. You have saved you autobiography for that one sentence. R.I.P.

  • Cecelia

same2u, the only klucker, I know is Clucker– YOUR sugar daddy’s TRRK”s former name.

  • Grammie

I’m surprised no one has mentioned this from KO:

“If the writer can let me know when Woods is punitively drafted by the military even though he is about eight years older than almost all the other draftees, I’ll begin to take him seriously.”

I beg to differ. My husband was drafted in the sixties at the age of almost 27. The icing on the cake was that he had been supporting his mother from the age of 14 and was still her sole support plus at his physical he had an elevated blood pressure that would have made him ineligible.

The draft board got around that by bring him to a dark room with a cot and had him rest for several hours. At that point they took his BP, still laying down, and voila, he was good to go straight into the army.

Keep in mind that this was before the war had heated up. I was very careful to never mention LBJ’s daughter’s actor boyfriend, George Hamilton III, who had a deferment b/c he was also the sole support of his mother.

If that’s your only proof, KO, it won’t wash.

  • writer

I think what really rankled KO was that he sees Ali as being a kindred spirit…another far leftie. Ali protested the war, became a Muslim, and generally stuck it to ‘the man’. Tiger Woods has no far left cred. Knee jerker that he is, and I emphasize the word ‘jerk’, Keith felt it necessary to go on the attack and defend one of his own.

  • jophis

KO has the right to be a hate mongering jerk, and everyone else has the right to laugh at the ridiculous manifestations of his many mental illnesses. By the way, is it true that Olbermann has to wear diapers? I’ll bet he is the 1st graduate of Cornell A&M to wear Depends at his age.

  • DumbPresident

Don’t you just want to flatten Olberman’s nose like Ali could?

  • Greycoat

” …I am again left to marvel how somebody can rise to a fairly prominent media position with no discernible insight or talent, save for an apparent ability….”

That is the same thought I have about Olbermann for he has no discernible insight or talent other than playing the fool so effectively. Olberman has his head so far up Obama’s ass that he can see past Obama’s teeth. Which is a frightening place to be if Barney Frank walks into the room.

  • writer

I don’t think Olbermann is playing a fool. He’s the real McCoy.
