MSNBC Kicks Off New Ad Campaign, “Lean Forward” (A Spike Lee Joint)

video

We learned in August that Spike Lee would be helming MSNBC’s latest ad campaign. Now, Lee’s first two commercial spots have been posted online. The ads are slick and upbeat, implying the news network’s progressive leanings without overtly declaring a political stance.

The first ad, titled “Declaration of Forward,” is a montage of celebratory clips—a marching band performing, a couple dancing at their wedding—that plays as a male voice intones, “We hold these truths to be self-evident. But all men and women have certain inalienable rights. Life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, and the freedom to believe that while history has gotten us this far”—at this point, we see a clip of the Obama family on Election Night 2008—”our best days are still ahead.” It ends with a series of pictures of different Americans—racially diverse, young, old, male, female—that flash by quickly before the campaign’s motto fills the screen: “Lean Forward.”

The second ad, “Hardwired,” is similar, albeit more grandiose. In quick succession, images representing the life cycle—from sperm meeting egg to children playing to adults getting married—flash onscreen, followed by clips of suffragettes marching and Martin Luther King. The idea here is that human beings are hardwired to be progressive: “After all, we were built to evolve. We were not made to sit still,” says this spot’s female narrator as the ad draws to a close.

See the beginning of Lee’s campaign below.

I am sure MSNBC knows that Spike Lee believes white people got together and planned out the invention of Aids and brought crack to the ghetto to eliminate black people!

I disagree. The slogan is still very politically ambiguous. What it’s supposed to say about MSNBC I can’t say. The only way to interpret it is through a political philosophical analysis. But – most Americans aren’t political scientists!

  • dhg

Lean forward and tilt to the left should be the real MSNBC motto.I’m sure it’s no coincidence that this campaign comes along ahead of a challenging election for Dems and is aimed at a major Dem constituency.

Right–asking Spike “Cheney-Blew-Up-The-Levies!!” Lee to design your ad campaign certainly isn’t “overtly declaring a political stance.” Seriously, I believe that.

Uhm . . .life begins at birth (or a few hours thereafter if you’re an Illinois legislator)–not with “sperm meeting egg.” What kind of misogynistic hate-monger are you?

Sorry – but I think if these ads are for MSNBC they miss the boat. If they are for the DNC GOTV effort, then I get them.

    OT, but:

Mondale to Obama: Ditch the idiot boards (h/t drudge)

    Bwahahahaha

    I approve of these ads.

At least they don’t have Keith Olbermann in them!

I see what you mean. Like trying to determine the difference between the GOP / Tea-baggers and Fox “News.”

Yes, and please stop yelling, you’ll wake the Royal Princess. She needs her beauty sleep. She’s the spitting image of the King and Queen.

That is not a fact. He said no such thing. Prove it.

CNN poured millions into advertising and you see where it got them. The Progressive niche is shrinking, you need to broaden your appeal (be fair and balanced) and don’t be criticizing all of the people of Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Tennessee, Florida, Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. You need a bigger audience than NYC and San Francisco.

  • Moderate

Sorry, I left out Texas. Olbermann hates Texans.

Why not just say, “Bend Over”?

I was just going to say it is a polite way to say “Bend Over”!

Since they do the bidding of the White House, it makes sense….

  • Sean68

MSNBC. I can almost picture the next ad campaign tag line: “AIDS was invented by white people to kill black people. MSNBC, the place for politics!”

  • Latin2

Spike Lee is a racist and race baiter…so he fits in over at MSNBC.

  • writer

Maybe Spike could use computer graphics to remove that “I’m passing a kidney stone” look from Keith’s face.

I’m sure you have deep seated hatred for black people or black culture. Don’t most whites?

After the Tuskegee and Guatemala experiment, you just can’t trust whites. Most of blacks misery throughout the history of America was from the hands of whites.

But anyways, time to move on. I like the new campaign. MSNBC is already beating CNN. In a few years, it will be the top new show, surpassing Fox. I mean, most of Fox viewers are over the age of 50. They will die off soon.

  • Phocus2

I’m yawning. I’m yawning somemore. Now, I’m zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
