NBC Declares West Virginia To Manchin, Effectively Confirming A Democratic Senate

video

Democratic Joe Manchin has been declared the winner by NBC News. This effectively confirms that the Democrats will maintain a majority in the US Senate and making it nearly impossible for the GOP to take over both House and Senate. Perhaps more importantly, Manchin got a lot of attention for running against Barack Obama’s policies (namely health care reform) despite being on the same party.

Manchin is a Democrat in name only. Manchin is someone I can live with. While it won’t give my Senate a Leader McConnell, it won’t give Obama Cap and Trade, Card Check, etc.

add to: this seat was previously held by Robert Byrd. As far as I’m concerned, the conservatives picked up a Senator in West Virginia.

He’ll caucus with the Democrats and be capable of compromise on his issues, an avenue not available to the GOP. I’ll take a moderate conservative in a blue suit over a fake populist in a red suit any day of the week.

he did have a very good victory speech, common sense

He’s in a tight spot. He had to turn into a conservative to get elected, but he’s back up for election in 2 years, so he won’t be able to run back to the left and get re-elected and he knows that.

West Virginia has a tradition of re-electing people. No problem, absent a Republican-style sex scandal. Don’t think that will happen with this truly family-oriented man.

    Sorry, Michelle-in-Utah.

Like the beating you took in 2006 and 2008?

    Yup.

The pendulum will swing back to us now in 2012.

    Count on it.

Shooter, things aren’t looking too good for Dems in 2012. Out of 33 Senate seats 21 are now being held by Dems and 2 by Independants. Rep. could split and own both houses.

Here’s the thing about Manchin. He only REALLY ran away from Obama when Raese started catching up in the polls.

Manchin will definitely go against the Democrats when it comes to cap & trade. But, for health care, I think he’ll be very open to compromise, whereas Raese would not have been.

Manchin isn’t a dream senator for the Democrats, but he’s a LOT better for them than the alternative would have been.

Isn’t the the same guy who after he was being defeated he turned it around by saying HE WOULD NOT VOTE FOR ANY OF OBAMA’S POLICIES?

He is the same guy who took a gun and shot the Cap/Trade bill.

He might not be what you Liberals think he is, and if he does not do what he says, his district will remember him.

…actually I believe he turned it around by saying he would not vote for any Liberal policies.

    1. He doesn’t have a ‘district’. He is currently governor and will soon be senator. He does not have a district, he has a state.

    2. He did not say that he would not vote on ‘any’ of Obama’s policies. He took umbrage with health care and cap and trade, that’s about it.

    3. Liberals are well aware that Manchin is a conservative.
