Robert Gibbs Mocks Sarah Palin ‘Handgate’ at Briefing

video

At today’s briefing, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs joined the ranks of comedy legends like Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Keith Olbermann, and Andrea Mitchell when he did his own version of Sarah Palin’s “helping hand.” Is the Palin Hand Jive the new “I’ma let you finish?”

After a surprise appearance by President Obama, who took questions from reporters without the aid of body art, Gibbs took his shot at Palin during the regular briefing:

From Karen Travers on Political Punch:

Answering a question about the Obama Administration’s stance on health care negotiations with Republicans, Gibbs stopped and looked at his left hand and said coyly, “Oh I wrote a few things down.”

“I wrote ‘eggs, milk and bread,’” Gibbs said. “But I crossed out bread, just so I can make pancakes for [son] Ethan if it snows.  And then I wrote down “hope and change,” just in case I forgot.”

I expect this from the Comedians, but I also expect more from this country’s leadership. This is truly pathetic.

  • TeaPartyAmerican

    Keep it classy Gibbs

  • The Real Royal King

Maybe if there had been a few more people, indeed, even a few people at the speech and Q&A, the Drop Out Governor’s hand notes would have been less noticeable.

  • Azarkhan

    Monkey see, monkey do.

  • MichelleF

Wow, that takes guts since he boss can’t put 2 words together without a teleprompter. I mean have you heard him speak off the cuff, it’s pathetic!!

  • felixw

I notice that Gibbs didn’t make any jokes about a speaker who doesn’t enough room on his hand for all the text he crams into his teleprompter.

  • TfT

And this is what his boss had just said:

“The people who sent us here expect a seriousness of purpose that transcends petty politics,” Obama said.

Words, just words; empty suits all around the WH.

    Children.

  • writer

If I may paraphrase Churchill: Never in the course of human events has the left considered someone so insignificant, yet spent so much time attacking them.

  • AikidoJoe

I’d love to see Obama be asked out the classiness of Gibbs. I’m amazed that Gibbs still has his job. But who would replace him? Bill Burton? That is just replacing Dumb with Dumber.

  • Ted

MichelleF _ Seems you’re having problems with complete sentences. At any rate, I am outraged, this is NOT SATIRE and Sarah Palin is so far below what you would expect from the WH that she is barely worth a mention. Press briefings are no place for this kind of pathetic low-brow humor. It’s an outrage I tell you, its…did I already say it was pathetic? I did? Okay then. Carry on with your whining.

  • same2u

Shouldn’t that piece of trash Palin forever forfeit her right to use a teleprompter?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bill-Adkins/1585417987 Bill Adkins

and her hands, too, same2u. Palin is so toast — hope they run her in 2012.

  • Azarkhan

Shouldn’t that piece of trash Same2u forever forfeit his right to comment?

  • Ted

I think so same2u but in the end…she has The Hand.

  • TfT

Beck doing a great job mocking the liberal left going after Palin and the tea partiers.

  • blueblogger

Hey you guys need to get a sense of humor!!! I’M Loving It

  • Ted

Glenn Beck is absolutely hilarious and really ought to consider a comedy tour. I’m still laughing over some very funny stuff he said yesterday!!

  • marigrace

Far be it from this WH to exhibit any class, Gibb’s, Emanuel, the Prez, himself, and his often tacky dressed, air-headed wife. No class what so ever.

  • Azarkhan

His take just now on Joe Klein was hilarious. And he called Klein’s alma mater Penn, the “trailer park trash of the Ivy League”. Just great!

  • TfT

The funny thing is that Gibbs has raised Palin’s stature by paying her attention and he doesn’t even know it. What a dolt.

I’m sure Glynnis is LOLing and will have the Beck Moment of the day up later with the Beck takedown of the liberal left elitist snots. It was classic Beck.

  • germ

Shouldn’t that piece of trash Same2u stop being a c*cksucker?

  • writer

Just a rumor, but I’ve heard there’s also a video out there of Sarah Palin cleaning her glasses. Can’t wait till the comedians get a hold of that one.

  • same2u

    Germ,

actually that is your mother you are referring to.

  • kit9

This is a laugh riot. Almost as funny as the Commander in Chief not knowing how to pronounce ‘corpsman’. Where is the saturation media coverge of that? And, it wasn’t a slip of the tongue. Obama said corpse-man three freaking times.

  • ChrisNH

I’m OK with Gibbs doing a bit of mocking. It releases any guilt I might feel for ridiculing him and the Obama administration. If they want to ‘hit back twice as hard,’ I’m happy to play for the side that wants to hit them back four times as hard.

  • writer

    Laughing at Obama is racist.

  • writer

Of course, so is everything else.

  • Ted

Writer – the rumor is in fact the truth…but she did have to refer to The Hand for instructions.

  • writer

I knew it! Now we know what Olbermann will be covering for the next six months.

  • TfT

If you haven’t seen the photoshop of Gibbs hand, check it out at ace. Funny.

Gibbs stands there to represent the President of the US. This mocking of Palin had to be approved by Obama himself. If that doesn’t demonstrate the guy is a child-man to all, nothing ever will.

  • writer

So he’s not really an empty suit. It just doesn’t fit well.

  • Ted

TfT – I think the term is “man-child” but you would have no way of knowing that. And yes, I’m sure the “man-child” gave his Presidential stamp of approval but only after a closed door meeting of the Joint Chiefs. I’m sure you can appreciate that.

  • TfT

I stand corrected, thank you Ted. Glad to see you concur that he is indeed a man-child. I doubt the Joint Chiefs are obsessed with Palin like Obama is though; they are busy working, not campaigning.

  • MichelleF

    Ted,
I’m so sorry if my sentence wasn’t grammatically correct. I’m working full time, watching kids, and commenting on the side. I know, I must be stupid! And btw, i wasn’t whining, I was poking fun at someone who is supposed to be “the best WH spokesman evah”! So much hate from you. You will should think about yoga.

  • Ted

No, MichelleF, you would be wrong to assume that I think you a simp. I do not. I think anyone who shows admiration for our intellectual leaders, i.e. Palin, Limbaugh and Beck (and not necessarily in that order) probably knows what they are talking about.

  • DEO

    From Slansky:
Palin took great umbrage at Rahm Emanuel’s use of the phrase “fucking retards,” then excused Rush Limbaugh’s subsequent reference to a “retard summit” as “satire.” She snarked to the Tea Partiers about President Obama’s use of a teleprompter, then was caught during the Q&A sneaking peeks at her hand, where she had pathetically scribbled crib notes in the idiotic belief that no one would notice them. (“Energy,” “Tax,” and “Lift American Spirits” — she was afraid she’d forget those deep thoughts?) And, of course, there was, “How’s that hopey-changey stuff workin’ out for ya?” which, in all my years of watching politics, is the most viscerally nauseating utterance I’ve ever heard. And these are just from the past week.

After a year and a half of exposure to this virulently toxic presence, the question on the table is: In our lifetime, has there ever been a worse human being in American politics than Sarah Palin? For all the morons and criminals and bigots we’ve been subjected to, has there been anyone else who has combined all of the fetid qualities — the proud ignorance, the sadistic viciousness, the shameless hypocrisy, the arrogant laziness, the congenital dishonesty, the unctuous sanctimony, the bilious resentment, and whichever others I’m forgetting for the moment — that this morals-free harridan so relentlessly displays? (Not to mention that atonal bray with which she communicates it all.)

    Talk amongst yourselves.

  • liberalontogeny

I have to admit, this Palin can keep herself in the news/spotlight. Whether you’re mocking her or supporting her, she has the knack and apparently power to get people, lots of people to react to her.

Power being that whether you’re mocking her or supporting her, the mocker and supporter assess in their mind to do it. Power in this case is an assessment of others towards Palin to react. Not an actual thing Palin has.

I don’t personally get it, Palin now has scores (maybe hundreds) of people on TV, in MSM and even the WH getting in on her handgate act. 4 days ago, it was nothing. Today, it’s really something. Handgate ‘invented’ nearly overnight.

Peronally, I don’t think she ultimately will ever be in position to impact our lives to any degree(I could be wrong), but yet she can get the forces going towards her (her name all over the place). And in a hurray!

  • Zakk

although I don’t think there was anything really wrong with what Palin did. I don’t see her writing on her hand any different then having note cards or pages of notes or a teleprompter. I do however think it is BELOW the office of the Presidency to use the official podium to ‘make fun’ of anyone.

Gibbs is the SPOKES PERSON for the President. He represents the thoughts and opinions of the White House when he’s up there. This is funny, but unacceptable.

  • Ben Linus

Damn. It’s like Palin wants to be ridiculed. If this is the best we can do, we are screwed. Pathetic.

  • TfT

It’s not like she said “Navy Corpse Man” while she was reading something off a teleprompter. Honestly, the President of the United doesn’t know how to pronounce Corps. It’s not like she visited 57 states. Yes, we can do better than himself and we will.

  • TfT

You are right Zakk, Gibbs is speaking FOR the President of the United states. It is clear that POTUS is afraid of Palin and for the President of the United states to jump into this fray is truly pathetic. Obama is obsessed with Palin and by doing this he has raised Palin’s stature.

  • TinaFromTampa

    Wow.
Thought I was looking at mediaite…. but seems like one someone here wants to monopolize the comments section.
That would be fine if there was ever an original thought.
I guess we can keep waiting.
    And waiting.
    And waiting.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs flashed a left palm with notes written on it at the news briefing Tuesday, an apparent mocking reference to former Alaska governor Sarah Palin’s use of her hand as notepad during the National Tea Party Convention in Nashville.

  • Ted

TfT – Scintillating analysis; I truly think you believe it. Let’s make this simple. At the same time Palin was mocking Obama for using a teleprompter, she was using The Hand. It just doesn’t getting any better or surreal than that. I have not heard any Palinite suggest that there was even just a hint of hypocrisy there. Her followers just don’t see the irony, and I suspect they never will. Sarah Palin is God’s gift to comedy, and this was one of her better moments.

  • Mad Dawgg

I don’t think Gibbs and Mitchell and Matthews get it on this Hand-Gate issue, it is they that are being mocked by John Q. Public:

    http://maddawggmanifesto.com/blog1.php/2010/02/09/msnbc-has-their-panties-in-a-bunch-about

They are gonna lose on this one too and they won’t even know why…

  • writer

If nothing else, the far left is noted for its sense of humor. For example, when Dave Letterman said Sarah Palin looked like a “slutty stewardess”, I’m sure if he’d said the same thing about Michelle Obama, the far left would’ve just laughed and laughed.

  • Zakk

Writer – in case you didn’t know, there are a different set of rules and standards for the left. They can drop the N bomb, or say something sexist or go after old people, foreigners, handicapped or just about whatever the hell they want and no one bats an eye.

But if a republican or anyone who doesn’t subscribe to their ‘fall in line’ mentality, then they are a racist, sexist ageist bigot. It’s called Liberal tolerance.

  • tommyd

I’d like to see a SNL skit on the two comparing their speech presentation ability. They could both make short notes on their person to give an hour long speech with.

Palin would have a few lines on one hand I would think,,, then there would be obiewan, he would have his whole body covered with lines, he would end up naked on the stage by the end as he has to uncover more and more of his crib notes… I could imagine how he would look as he contorts trying to read the notes he wrote up his ,,,, well you get the picture…..

    The emperor has no clothes.

  • tommyd

oh , and Gibbs is a moron, been obvious from the start.

Tony Snow, now there was a class act, something this current administration totally lacks.

  • DEO

I forgot about him, Snow was the WORST!

  • DEO

This is in the paper today…apparantly Palin was wearing not only crib notes BUT a black MEMORIAL bracelet for servicemen, WHY?
    Interesting, I thought:

This brings me back to my issue with Palin. The name on her black memorial bracelet — one, like the gold star, a demonstration of a friend or associate who was killed in action — is that of her oldest son, Track. Track served honorably in Iraq, and both he and his parents should be thanked for his selfless service to his country. He is also alive.

Commemorating Track’s service by wearing a a black memorial bracelet which is reserved for those dead or even a red bracelet for those missing in action, demonstrates a horrifying contempt for those who gave their last full measure of devotion or an almost unbelievable ignorance of the importance of symbols in American history.

Unfortunately, given Palin’s reputation and frequent public statements, I assume it is the latter.

  • pyrope

The jab taken by Gibbs shows in no uncertain terms the mindset of liberals–if they can’t beat you on the issues, they’ll demean, slander, and lie about you. OK, we all know that, but what’s really a new low point here is that Gibbs made his jab with the White House Seal in the background. THIS is the administration running this country. They learned a lot in Chicago, didn’t they? Meanwhile, we have an alleged president who can’t speak to a group of grade schoolers without a teleprompter, and Gibbs takes Sarah Palin to task for writing 4 words in the palm of her hand to assist her in delivering a 1 hour twenty minute speech. Yep, we can see that the -0bama regime is a real class act.
