Senator Jim Bunning Yells At Reporters

Just in case there was any remaining question about Senator Jim Bunning‘s status as cranky old man, we submit the following video evidence. Some background: last week Bunning made some news by blocking Senate action needed to prevent an estimated 1.2 million American workers from prematurely losing their unemployment benefits next month. He then complained when his own tactic caused him to miss a basketball game. When pressed by reporters seeking comment, the Senator from Kentucky became a bit unhinged.

ABC’s Jonathan Karl and Z. Byron Wolf report from Washington:

As the doors closed, I asked Bunning if he is concerned about those losing their benefits.

He did not answer. This is all on-camera.

Senator Bunning was even more expressive before the cameras arrived, using a little sign language.

When Senate producer Z. Byron Wolf spotted Bunning exiting his office, Bunning said, “I’m not talking to anybody.” When Wolf asked him to stay and talk to our cameras, Bunning walked toward the elevator and shot the middle finger over his head.

For the record, claiming that an elevator is exclusively for Senate use is probably not the best visual to impress your constituents back home.

This man has gone insane. I’m not saying that because of his politics. I’m not sure anyone even knows what his politics are anymore. He is simply non compos mentis is a most dangerous sort of way. Surely, the Senate could act to censure him, if not remove him. I expect him to begin hurling feces at passersby at any moment.

I feel bad for Bunning. His intentions weren’t necessarily in the wrong place… wanting to use remaining stimulus funds to pay for the extension, instead of just adding it to the already established debt. Of course, it’s a lot easier to say he simply wanted to “block the action,” even though it doesn’t tell the whole story.

That said, Bunning isn’t doing himself any favors. He’s not coming across as sympathetic, and his actual message (see above) is getting lost in his anger at the situation. Sure the media spins, and in this case it’s much easier to spin and laugh, then to speak about it seriously… but you’ve got to keep your cool.

He should be using every opportunity to speak to reports, and restate is view over and over again, as clearly and concisely as possible. Yeah, it’s frustrating to have to repeat yourself to people who don’t really want to listen, but if he wants to win this battle (and at this point, it’s probably too late), it’s how you have to play the game.

Jim Bunning is the most evil person that has ever existed. He probably eats little kids like candy or something. But one thing you won’t hear in the reporting is that Bunning is trying to force the Senate to abide by it’s rule to ‘pay as you go’

Actually, I think before he was hit with simultaneous insanity and dementia, he was a pretty good guy.

So let me get this straight, you don’t think we should use stimulus $$ for this instead of adding to the deficit?

  • The Real Royal King

It doesn’t really add to the deficit, Michelle F. This money goes back into the economy, immediately. When your situation is such that you spend 100% of your “income” on necessities, every dime rebuilds the economy. It is as close to deficit neutral as anything can be, Michelle F. Politics aside, this guy is insane. Bu the way, I would say that Robert Byrd is physically incapacitated to serve now. Nothing partisan here.

Mediaite and the silly yuppies that run it….

Sen Bunning makes an important point: If the Federal government can’t find 10 billion dollars in spending cuts to pay for 10 billion dollars in unemployment spending, when will it ever reduce the deficit?

Below are some possible ramifications that even a yuppie can understand.

    1) A lower credit rating for the USA that will lead to higher interest on borrowing:

    2) The dollar being replaced as the worlds reserve currency leading to higher prices for everything:

    3) China controlling US policy by leveraging its purchase of Treasury bills and finally deciding to challenge US interests around the world:

Bunning should be more professional than to act this way. He should know better and simply have his handlers rough the reporter up to make his point; Martha Coakley knows as much and she is only a measly State AG.

“…Martha Coakley knows as much and she is only a measly State AG.”
    Good point!

  • Grammie

    Is that all there was?

Based on D Grant’s writeup and calls for men in white coats running in with strait jackets to carry him away I was expecting a bit more than an elevated obviously aggravated voice saying “excuse me” while stepping forward with the palm of his hand up and flat.

That said the reporters have every right to question him and he has every right to accept or decline, stand still or leave. They were all well within their rights so the only legit question is was he completely wise in taking that tack and what (he’s not running again) affect will it have on his constituents?

Look at the bright side. He didn’t defend his elevator with a screaming bean ball to the reporter’s head!

As for the profane gesture, I have it on good authority that he just attended a lecture given by Bob Becel. I’m sure he was just practicing what he learned at Becel’f feet, uhh finger.

  • Grammie

You know it was just BHO praising paygo and he just signed it back into law so WHY<,OH WHY are the Dems all upset with him? He is just trying to follow his President in a bipartisan way!

  • Grammie

Wow, this is already up on the net.

You lefty’s should absolutely love it, guaranteed.

He was NOT yelling. He was responding to a couple of jerks–I said JERKS!!!!!–in a far more polite manner than most anyone else might have. I saw the “undoctored” clip on TV.

Besides that, Mr. Bunning is a hero for holding the Dems’ feet to the fire on their “pay-go” bill, which the idiot from Nevada uses only when it suits his interests.
