To celebrate the anniversary, the President’s Twitter account directed followers to a shirt they could buy to support the reelection campaign that says “still a BFD” on it. Fox & Friends took some time this morning to investigate: does this “vulgar” shirt put our children’s morality in danger?

Upon hearing the news of Etch-a-Sketch’s stock price exploding following his controversial quip about Etcha-a-Sketches, Mitt Romney‘s top adviser Eric Fehrnstrom hit back at the snark, jokingly tweeting that he’ll help make another ’80s-era toy popular again. “Etch A Sketch stock is up? Psst, I’ll mention Mr. Potato Head next. Buy Hasbro,” Fehrnstrom tweeted.

An anonymous Twitter user took Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney‘s spokesperson’s Etch-A-Sketch gaffe to new heights by creating a snarky Twitter account mocking the statement and tweeting as ‘Romney’s Etch-A-Sketch.’ “Hope @MittRomney does not trade me in for Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots when the General Election campaign starts,” tweeted the account.

Khulood Badawi is a United Nations employee working in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and she has come under fire in the last few days for tweeting a photo of a dead Palestinian girl and attributing it to a casualty of Israeli military forces. The tweet has now resulted in the Israeli ambassador the United Nations demanding that OCHA fire her.

Julian Assange has been under house arrest in the UK for some years now but, according to the official Twitter account of his organization, Wikileaks, he is going to take a shot at running for a seat in the Australian Senate, anyway. Close to 10PM last night, @Wikileaks announced that they had found it was “possible for Julian Assange to run for the Australian Senate while detained. Julian has decided to run.” Talk about a Friday night news dump.

During his radio broadcast Thursday,Rush Limbaugh announced he was officially activating his Twitter account, @limbaugh, and told everyone to retweet him for support. “Everybody has been asking me what they can do to help in all of this, and I’ve been saying, nah, just do what you’ve been doing just, if you listen, keep listening, that’s fine, but there’s an army out there that wants to be mobilized, and so, I figured, use Twitter for it. I’m just going to put some things on Twitter that you can help us circulate. It’s that simple you just retweet them!”

On Tuesday evening, Bill Maher sent out a snarky missive targeted at the two Southern states voting in the Republican primaries, tweeting “Toothless Tuesday too tight to tally!”

Republican Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley is fed up with The History Channel’s programming and took his rage out on Twitter, unleashing a fury of tweets, chewing out the network for their reality programming and lack of actual historical shows. “When I signed up for the History Channel on my satellite service, I expected to get history,” Grassley told the Washington Examiner. “Instead, all I see are people chopping wood or driving trucks on an icy road.”

Meghan McCain is one of the many attendees of the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas. Forbes writer Meghan Casserly covered McCain at one of the events, and following the panel, she managed to sit down with McCain for a short Q&A. During the panel discussion, McCain talked about how she views social media like “pretend[ing] the internet is your best girlfriend” and using that as a jumping-off point for sharing information on the web.

Salon Editor-In-Chief Joan Walsh ignited a firestorm of controversy after she tweeted an anti-Mormon joke at Mitt Romney‘s expense. Alluding to the Mormon tradition of post-mortem baptisms, Walsh derisively wrote “Romney’s saving the soul of America – so he doesn’t have to baptize us after we’re dead.”

During last night’s debate, Republican hopeful Mitt Romney name-dropped George Costanza, the irascible pop cultural icon from the 90s hit show Seinfeld, after he had received applause.

Rupert Murdoch tweeted his approval of Republican hopeful Rick Santorum and his views on Monday, saying “From distance, Santorum doing great. Values really do count in America, and not sneered at as in parts of Europe. Win Michigan game over.”

From the advent of social media, the marketing departments everywhere have been eagerly trying to get us human cattle to “follow” soulless corporations. And, why shouldn’t they? If there are people out there dumb enough to actively sign up to read McDonald’s PR messages (329,000 Twitter followers!) or “like” a soda brand on Facebook (who wouldn’t want to be friends with Pepsi?), why shouldn’t corporations exploit them? However, these attempts to get people to “engage” with brands sometimes get a little weird. Take, for example, today’s tweet from Waffle House in which they just wanted to know what people thought of Whitney Houston’s funeral. You know, like giant restaurant chains do.

Ever since Andrew Breitbart reminded Occupy protesters at CPAC that their movement had a serious sexual harassment and rape problem, Breitbart and many in his company have been repeatedly making the point as a reminder to a public that has mostly forgotten that Occupy exists that they are not, in the aggregate, the most serious group of political dissenters. This has gotten the attention of some of the lower-tier fringe left, with the latest of these being noted political scholar Alec Baldwin, who added this veritable contribution to politics today: “Andrew Breitbart is a festering boil on the anus of public discourse.”

Comedian Ricky Gervais sat down with fellow Brit Piers Morgan Thursday and had a lively conversation on life, love, Twitter, politics and religion.

Holy frijoles! A snarky tweet sent by Obama campaign manager Jim Messina intended to jab Republicans over weak Latino support backfired when dozens of Latino Republicans fired back at Messina about his racially-insensitive use of the term “chimichanga.” “The chimichanga? It may be the only thing Republicans have left to offer Latinos,” Messina tweeted.

On Thursday, Donald Trump lit into MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell on Twitter, mocking him that his show will soon be cancelled. “Lawrence O’Donnell will soon have another cancelled show to go along with his three cancelled TV series, “Mister Sterling”, “The Kill Point” and “First Monday”,” Trump tweeted.

There was a witness to the White House shooter. Several, really; maybe dozens. But one, a young woman on her way to a hotel from the airport, tweeted about it. Her claims, unsubstantiated, were retweeted by a local reporter and at least one local blog. Several people (including myself) pressed her for more information, corroboration. Perhaps too many people: she soon deleted her Twitter account and pulled down a blog post she’d written.

Earlier today the news broke that CNN contributor Roland Martin will not be appearing on the network indefinitely for what GLAAD perceived to be a homophobic tweet. Despite his personal ideological bent, the reaction from the conservative media was a swift defense of the longtime CNN pundit. But the conservative reaction to Martin’s suspension is no surprise because the conservative movement has long abandoned the left/right divide for a new war front: that between individuals and the media elite.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has called out columnist and CNN contributor Roland Martin for a Tweet he made during last night’s Super Bowl.

There are some topics around here at Mediaite, like Kim Kardashian and Snooki, that only end up here tangentially, much to the chagrin of those of us that would rather talk about more dignified things like Mitt Romney doing laundry and Sarah Palin‘s Facebook doodles. But outside of his feuds with the diminutive Jersey Shore star, Gov. Chris Christie is a beloved and respected political entity who may be our next-next president. If we report it every time Christie entertainingly yells insults at random people, surely a scrape with Snooki merits attention.

Roseanne Barr’s candidacy for the Green Party’s presidential nomination is off to an auspicious start with her bid drawing a shout-out from the star of Nickelodeon’s hit show iCarly, Jennette McCurdy.
