Alan Simpson Calls For Investigation Into Grover Norquist: ‘Who Is He Slave To?’

video

As far as political personalities who hold no public office or have a job at a media association go, none seems to have skyrocketed to newfound popularity the way ’90s staple and Americans for Tax Reform head Grover Norquist has during the debt crisis debate. With only thirteen Republicans refusing to sign his anti-tax pledge during this round of budget debate, former Sen. Alan Simpson told Lawrence O’Donnell tonight that it’s time to “peel all the layers of the onion” and figure out just why people seem to listen to intently to Norquist.

In an interview on The Last Word tonight, Simpson noted that Norquist had challenged Republican Sen. Tom Coburn on a $6 billion cut on ethanol subsidies he had called “tax increases,” which incensed Simpson greatly. “Grover and his happy band of warriors are trying to call that a tax increase– that’s a damn lie and he knows it,” he told O’Donnell. “And if he can get away with that, elect him President.”

Simpson continued to question Norquist’s power throughout the segment, arguing that “he can’t kill you, he can’t burn your house, he can defeat you in reelection,” and if a public servant thought the latter was enough to obey him, they didn’t deserve the spot. He also told O’Donnell several times that “if Grover Norquist is more powerful than the President of the United States and the Congress, he should run for President,” leaving open-ended the question of why he hadn’t pursued public office.

On that note, Simpson called for an investigation. “Grover Norquist should be examined into– where does he get his money?” In times where people amass so much power, he argues, it becomes necessary to “peel all the layers of the onion.” “Anytime anyone gets this powerful,” he argued, “you want to dig in… who is he slave to?”

He clarified that he did not mean “salacious stuff and his personal life,” but how Americans for Tax Reform operated and why so many people in Congress feared him, because based only on his status as leader of an anti-tax group, “you must be chicken if you fall for that crap.”

Alan Simpson will now officially be recognized as a RINO by the lunatics who populate the ultra far far far right.

  • Anonymous

If you disagree with Grover Norquist, refute his arguments.  Debate his policy positions.  But these non-stop character attacks from the Left have just gone too far.  This is not punditry, it’s not journalism — MSNBC is just the “smear du jour” network.

  • Anonymous

Alan Simpson has become sane in his old age.  Or perhaps it’s just in comparison to todays right.

  • Anonymous

Alan Simpson is very much on the right.  But now I’m betting he’s nothing more than a RINO.

    hadn’t pursued public office.

That makes absolutely no sense. Why would you seek a position with less power than you already (allegedly) have?

Norquist is kinda greasy, but his influence is wildly overstated here. “Stop with the Tax and Spend crap.” is just a message that sells.

Why would they debate his policy positions when it’s easier to launch ad hominem attacks?  Liberals cannot help but to call names and yell about boogeymen that don’t exist.

  • Anonymous

WOW – when has Alan Simpson ever gotten a headline here?  Would any of this happen to be because Grover disagreed with  Simpson’s deficit plan?

I don’t know, but I’m LOLing that mediaite actually is giving Simpson a headline, just cuz he went on MSNBC to trash republicans…MSNBC trashes republicans every day, and I’m sure Simpson told LOD he was gonna go after republicans which is why he was invited on, or something.

Simpson is a non-player, so is LOD…but nice try Frances.

    snicker.

Sure, call me names.  That really makes you look intelligent.

Then again, you could try refuting my point.  But I guess that’s a bit a too hard for you.

  • Anonymous

I guess Simpson gets the headline becasue Farnces doesn’t want to talk about the outrageous Birthday Bash Obama is attending with his billionaire/millionaire friends???

Not a single word, NADA, NOTHING….instead we get Simpson.

It doesn’t get much funnier than that.

Why waste your time Simpson. Investigate Holder for fast and furious, lying to congress, dereliction of duty and subversion. Oh yeah, he ‘is’ the attorney general. Ok……..then just investigate your political enemies. Red herring politics once again from the presidents team. Expect the repetitive chant of the collective parroting ‘investigate Norquist’ ad nauseam.

  • Michelle

Yeah, all those rich people who don’t pay their share of taxes under one roof.  Maybe he can get them to kick in a few billion to help tackle the debt, you know before they are forced to.

Poor BFD, he got lost in the wrong article.  Maybe someone can direct him to the Glenn Beck discussion thread.

  • Anonymous

Simpson does not consider Norquist his political enemy they’re both Republicans.  After working on the Simpson Bolls commission I’m betting he may consider him an enemy of the USA tho.

  • Anonymous

What a surprise,Mr. “drown the government in the bathtub”, who managed to avoid jail time with his BFF Jack Abramoff, uses thuggish tactics on Republicans to enforce his jihad against the American middle class. Funny how many of Simpson’s past statements and votes serve the same purpose.

I can’t wait to see how many more stalwart defenders of American Oligarchy rail against their new proteges.

He can have whatever he likes, it just proves how out of touch he is with the American people.  While unemployment is sky high and many can’t even afford to pay their own bills, he’s partying with millionaires and billionaires.  He has always been in an elite bubble, never having to associate with the common working man in our society.

What exactly is Grover Norquist’s policy positions besides never, ever, ever raise taxes again, ever?  Making sure any Democrat can never govern as a Democrat despite the fact that they have been elected by the majority of the American people and making the federal government so small it can be drowned in a bath tub?

Lawrence Odonnell and Simpson fail to understand that majority of America agree on the tea party premise that big centralized government and their over spending needed a huge reduction. Conservatives want real cuts not cuts which are down the road, which never are really made. Ron Paul 2012

  • Anonymous

Yes much better to suppose in your head than face the facts of reality …. that the TP terrorists were willing to take down the whole government in order to protect the super rich and huge corporations.  Now start whining about those greedy welfare recipients.

  • Anonymous

“I don’t want to eliminate government, just shrink it enough that I can drag it to the bathroom and drown it”, is approximately what Norquist said.  I can just see him holding Uncle Sam’s feet up while pulling his head under the water and it ain’t a pretty picture.

  • Anonymous

That is exactly what Alan Simpson would like investigated.  Because the right does listen to him.

What about the Dems that held the same position.  Why aren’t they terrorists, hypo?

  • Anonymous

Yet 3/4 of the American people wanted revenue increases as well as spending cuts.  Yet the TP terrorists were willing to bring down the entire US economy as well as the world economy rather than do the will of the American people who they swore to serve.  Instead they served Grover Norquist.

How does it feel to support a party who would blow up the world economy for Norquist?

  • Centrist Analyst

….IMO, this is exactly why our country is in trouble.  We fight with each other so much, we’re losing ourselves.  Strong attacks right and left are out of control and to the point where people can’t argue policy any longer and result to over-the-top rhetoric as the premise of any argument.  The only damage is being caused by ourselves.  It’s time we face that.

  • Anonymous

Oh that’s right, you moved the goal posts.

That’s exceptionally lame, BFD. Even for you. Who said no one should look at Noqrquist’s funding? I notice you didn’t answer that.

Not sure what Democrats were willing to take down the US economy rather than allow any revenue to be included.  But any small group of government officials who are willing to go against the will of the majority of the American people and destroy the world economy just to get their way … are terrorists … be they right or left.

  • Anonymous

Sure he was. That’s why Obama picked him to co-chair his fiscal responsibility commission. Because he’s far, far right and always has been until these CRAZY Tea Party people came along.

Do you actually think before you post, ever? Or just long enough to cobble something together that you think sounds good enough?

  • Michelle

Did Jethro forget to turn the barn light out again, Skippy?

  • Anonymous

hmmmmmmmmmm I wrote a long answer to this and it just disappeared into the ethers.

I don’t know of any Democrats who were willing to blow up the world economy in order to make sure there was no revenue included.  But any leaders be they Democrat or Republican who ignore the majority will of the American people and hold the world economy as hostage in order to get what they want is the very definition of terrorist.

  • Anonymous

    That’s one way out.

  • Darladoon

i refute his argument that any tax increases:

    a) hurt the economy

    b) destroy jobs

    c) help the middle class

Fact: Simpson is on the same plain as McCain when a
debate is on between views they are the ones that are in the I cave in group on
the issue and then state it was in the best interest too compromise. Investigating people because of opinons is a crock. Taxing is too
high. Spending is too high. Both need to be lowered and will be lowered. At 14.5 trillion in debt it’s time to cut and cut again. Talk about freezing budget at todays levels with no increases and 1% across the board cuts on all expenditures would save about 9 trillion in ten years is gaining steam and should get support before both sides get ax happy on eithers pies.

    @ Fsnook–

What I meant by “ironic” was the fact that it’s just interesting that no matter who is President, or what party is in power, there is over-the-top rhetoric that IMO, doesn’t necessarily add to any cogent argument.  I take no sides and am a much happier individual on account I try my best to analyze a situation without using partisanship as the point of departure for a political argument.  If we keep starting the conversation with any predisposed conclusions about “the other side,” we end up in this loop where nothing gets done and we don’t advance policy that helps us all.

Darladoon–I’m not a Liberal nor a Conservative.  I have strong views from both sides on different issues.  Unfortunately, and I mean no disrespect, but you are part of the problem.  Take a look at the posts on this site, and many others.  Fight Fight Fight, and no solutions.  We gotta get beyond ourselves and direct those voices at Washington on OUR terms if we want real solutions, and not the ones mired in political diatribes.

I’m not trying to preach to you, I’m just exercising my right to speech, just like you guys.  At the end of the day, we are still Americans.   And tomorrow we will be too.  That’s the cool part about it.

No.  There are always going to be those who will vote against the debt ceiling when they already know they have the votes to pass it.  It’s called voting your conscious while knowing it will have no impact.  It’s quite another matter to vote while knowing you have the ability to destroy the world economy.  It’s nuanced I know.  But the difference between the two is massive.

Remember folks, only folks on the right complain about Republicans who no longer represent their ideas.  On the left… that never happens.  Right, Zell Miller?  Right, Joe Lieberman?  Right, any Democrat who has ever dared to cross the protest line, and appear on FNC?

It’s not really true that the right does not like debt.  If it were true they would support increases in revenue.  The American people are just not that stupid that they can’t see that.  Good luck.  Time to say we don’t have a revenue problem we have a spending problem again.

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit
is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government
can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing
financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s
    reckless fiscal policies.

No, I mean the “No raising taxes” pledge. The one we’re talking about. That one is the one I mean. Because that’s what we’re talking about. I most certainly am not talking about the list of delusional talking points in your head.

    its called politics

    note to cjdohio and michelle:

all terrorists are not necessarily scary muslims

the definition is simple:  ”An individual who uses violence, terror, and intimidation to achieve a result”

    hardly a controversial argument

terrorism is a tactic, not just something done by scary muslims

can you explain to us another way of paying for the things we all need, other
    than this thing called “taxation”?

we ALREADY take money from rich people (and poor people)

so your entire point is 100% nonsense

and besides, LOGICALLY, if you don’t want to take from rich people,
then you want to take from poor people (in the form of spending cuts)

so, we NOW KNOW, that cjdohio, in the midst of the worst recession in 75 years,
    would rather punish the poor.

    thanks, cjd!

The Democrats who voted against it did so because it only had spending cuts and no revenue.  Plus they already had the votes for it to pass once the demands of the hostage takers were given in to so the Democrats knew their votes wouldn’t do any harm.  Got it?  probably not.

No one should have this kind of power.  No one should sign any pledge because you don’t know what will happen.  Obama gave the republicans what they wanted.  Remember baggers The  Cryer of the House said he got 98% of what he wanted.  So remember the double dip recession will sit on the cryers desk along with all the baggers who forced this vote.  By the way once Obama sign this republican bagger bill the economy will lose over 300,000 jobs.  Welcome to 1937 repeat.  This is the same thing republicans did back then.  Since you all love depression I hope you all lose your jobs and homes first.  The domino effect is going to happen.

The mere fact that Simpson would appear on the socialist hack Larry O’ Donnell’s failed cable program is all I need to know. Allan Simpson was and is part of the problem. The notion that Grover Norquist would be targeted for an investigation because he advocates smaller, more responsible government and lower taxes is simply scary. I thought it was pretty well-known that Norquist has a Muslim wife and a lot of Muslim financial connections. In fact he quietly placed a lot of Muslims into top gov’t positions during the Bush years. It is also true he refuses to deny — or even discuss — the issue at all, and I wonder why.

Why is this thing like a football game for so many people? Grover Norquist is a water boy for the corporate interests that control this country. Corporate media has so many people convinced that he’s playing for your team and he’s going to save you from big bad taxes, but he’s really there to make sure that the big business interests don’t have to pay and that you do when the US sends its military half way around the world to protect big business’ assets. This debt deal, this is how you pay. The gov’t ran up all this debt fighting these two wars, and now the consequence is austerity for you and more tax cuts for the wealthy. The bankrupting of America, this is Grover’s work.

  • ProChoiceGrandma

And here is a good collection of info on Grover Norquist:
    http://www.channelingreality.com/Cards/grover_norquist-1.htm
“Norquist calls it the ‘Leave-Us-Alone Coalition’ a grouping of gun owners, the Christian right, homeschoolers, libertarians, and business leaders that he has almost single-handedly managed to unite. The common vision: an America in which the rich will be taxed at the same rates as the poor, where capital is freed from government constraints, where government services are turned over to the free market, where the minimum wage is repealed, unions are made irrelevant, and law-abiding citizens can pack handguns in every state and town. ‘My ideal citizen is the self-employed, homeschooling, IRA-owning guy with a concealed-carry permit,’ says Norquist. ‘Because that person doesn’t need the goddamn government for anything.”

Simpson a fascist?  Look up the meaning of the word because you obviously don’t know what it means.  Wait I’ll help you:  Fascisim : a
political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that
exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a
centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.  A simpler version is that of Benito Mussolini, “Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power.”

  • DesertSun59

Wow.  Simpson is looking to lose his job due to voters thinking he’s not a Republican now.  If there’s Kool-Aid to drink, the GOP/Teatards will drink it.  Simpson didn’t drink it.  Here’s what’s next for him:

    1.  He’ll be called a RINO by his constituents and the bobble heads on Fox.
    or
    2.  Someone will compare him to a Nazi.
    or
    3.  He will be removed from any committees.

That’s how the GOP/Teatards play this game.  It’s for keeps.  Their sole purpose in office is to destroy the economy.  They have proven it.

  • Reddpenny

As I recall, ”Follow the money” was a good idea in dealing with Republicans in years past.

That’s really weird. I guess if you are from the Right you might consider this piece a “character attack”. I would approve of an investigation into Grover Norquist’s politics. He does, indeed, seem to have too much influence.

  • http://societyfordaintydamsels.wordpress.com Fennel

Okay I’ll debate.  I am a disability advocate in Phila, PA and I believe if you are completely NOT for raising taxes, ie revenue than the only option is to cut and that  lets face it means social programs.  I heard from my director that Mr Norquist is totally against entitlement programs, ie welfare, foodstamps, medicaid, medicare, social security. In other words he wants low income people to fend for themselves.  Is it going to far to care for  , help the less fortunate?   Besides medicare and social security , those using these services bought into them throughout their lives with their taxes.  If you really want to cut taxes, cut spendin gthem on unjustified, unnecessary wars as in Iraq.  Plus trim the military.  Don’t take much needed services for those who need them.   Grover Norquist does not acknowledge the responsibility of the US govt for those within the US who are senior citizen , low income, disabled.

Yea.  A.K.A the eight years of the G.W. Bush Administration.  If we’re not careful, it will be either Rick Perry, Michelle Bachmann or Mitt Romney.   My question is; why hasn’t Obama called out this little fact?  The real – TRUE – REASON for the debt ceiling stand off on the part of the republicans/tea baggers  was really their handler Grover Norquist.

” in… who is he slave to?”  My Guess – GEORGE H.W. BUSH.  or the Koch Brothers.
