Chris Wallace On Michele Bachmann’s ‘Flake’ Question: ‘I Messed Up, I’m Sorry’

Video

Chris Wallace is back again commenting on one of his interviews, but this time he is also apologizing. Earlier today he interviewed Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann and rather bluntly asked her “are you a flake?” It’s a question that Wallace now admits he regrets.

Wallace acknowledged that Bachmann seemed perturbed by the question and then addressed his viewers:

“A lot of you were more than perturbed, you were upset and felt that I had been rude to her. And since in the end it’s really all about the answers and not about the questions. I messed up, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean any disrespect.”

Wallace concluded it’s always a learning process, and apparently he’s learned that asking someone if they are a “flake” has undesirable results. Well it still made for an interesting and awkward television moment regardless.

No problem, Chris. Just edit the word out. For the sake of time, of course.

Geez, he’s becoming a Lard Limbaugh, spending almost all of time talking about himself.

  • BFD

    Typical for Fox.
Apologize to a Righty wingnut for a question but not to Jon Stewart for editing out an answer.

Once again the “Marching Orders” have come down.

I suppose I ought to go over to Koldys and find out what Ailes’ talking points about this later blunder are. Or, I could go to NewHounds and find out.

It’s funny how the damage he did to one of Fox’s favorite presidential candidates has to be fixed immediately.
No waiting a week or going on Imus to address this Sunday’s show content.
    This needed immediate attention!!!!

LOL @ all the angry calls Roger Ailes must have been getting.
Wallace is lucky he escaped with his job intact.

The real FLAKE here is CHRIS WALLACE, what a disgrace to his Father (MIKE WALLACE) one of the truly great Journalist of all time. This Clown get paid by his masters at Fox, in the MILLIONS a year so he knows what to say and when to say it. This is no more a Newsman than the man in the moon, Just pathetic!!!

  • THE REAL ROYAL KING

The shoe may still fall. On his throat. Two colossal blunders in consecutive weeks. Not blunders like labeling Mark Sanford a Democrat or photoshopping more people into Tea Party events. We’re talking about blunders which damage FOX “News” here. Who knows? Wallace may go the way of O’Beckerhead who went the way of Erica Kane. Announce the end, but prolong the agony.

  • TeaPartyNation

Ya gotta wonder: Is wallace’s contract with FOX about to end, and was this insult to Bachmann and the FOX viewers an on-air video resume for him to submit to the “Corrupt B-tards” at the the M(ore)S(ocialism)from N(itwit)B(iased-socialist)C(lowns) network?

I agree with most of what you said, although you over-stated this a bit, in my view.

    Moral of the story…..

It’s okay for Fox to question if Obama is America born, a Muslim, a patriot, a Nazi, a fascist communist pinko socialist, a racist, anti-American, or disengaged and too laid back but don’t EVER question if Bachmann is smart.

Wallace used a term that could more appropriately be applied to our current President.

“n. An unreliable person; someone who agrees to do something, but never follows through”

“n) A useless, shady, deceitful person who is so unreliable and selfish they cause you much anger and frustration. A Flake’s only agenda is what they want to do. They have a weak character, often the products of bad parenting/spoiling kids. A Flake will make plans, never attend, and give no reason for their absence, even after they spent hours calling, texting, or emailing you. Flakes try to manipulate everybody, and sometimes are not the idiots they appear to be. A Flake often has little to no real friends due to their erratic behavior. You can never rely on a Flake. When questioned about their behavior, a Flake just gives up on the relationship and moves on to another person. “

Disagree- not a good moment for Chris Wallace, but he has apologized. Given how Chris Matthews and Lawrence O’Donnell CONTINUALLY characterize Bachmann and Palin as slutty stewardesses, Wallace’s question did allow Bachmann to state her credentials, which, by the way, are far superior to those of our current president. It is unfortunate that Chris Wallace didn’t attribute the meme to the people who have started it- Matthews and O’Donnell.

  • LOGICandREASON

I’m glad Chris Wallace has acknowledged he messed up.

Those kind of stupid questions should be reserved for flip-flop deceitful politicians like Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, John McCain and the others.

Bachmann is a decent politician with two law degrees and should never have been asked such a silly question.

I have forgiven you Chris Wallace, but next time don’t do it.

  • bradmcneal

I like Bachman and I think it was a fair question. She has some head-scratching statements out there that do raise questions.
Her answer on gay marriage was incoherent at best and a tapdance at the least.
Her answer to the flake query was actually better, but a simple no would have been good as well.

Raising her 5 kids and her highly dubious record of “fostering” 23 teenagers are the only qualifications Michele Bachmann is capable of touting. Is she a flake ?

If these so-called qualfications are so very critical for the Oval Office, Michele should get into a debate with the Octomom to let the voters decide who is more qualified as US President and leader of the free (breed) world.

Maybe, Arnold’s nanny and Kate plus her 8 kids can join in as the debate moderator.

I agree completely. What is most pathetic about this new episode at Fox News for me is how personal criticism by Republican hosts of Republican candidates is not tolerated under any conditions. However, I’m still waiting for the apology by Glenn Beck on Fox News for calling Obama a “racist” or for any of the other hateful comments made by Fox hosts maligning Democrats over the years. Roger Ailes just talks privately to the Republican hosts when they go over the line attacking Democrats. It’s a one way avenue at Fox News driven by its far right wing political culture.

Let’s examine how Gov. Sarah Palin, Rep. Michele Bachmann and President Ronald Reagan are treated via the news, today, by examining headlines and story-lines; then compare that to Barack’s treatment.

    A. Sarah Palin “Unbiased” News Articles:

    1. The Politico’s VandeHei states: “No Single Reporter At Any Media Organization Thinks Palin Should Be President”

If you talk to any single reporter at any media organization that we’re aware of, I don’t think that anyone thinks she can be president or should be president.

    2. MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough says: Palin’s Tour “A Big, Old, Fat Weekend of Nothing”

    3. NYTimes: Editor Keller claims—Media “Would Recoil in Horror” from Palin Presidency

    4. WAPost: Gov. Palin Conservative Emails “Complete Balderdash”

    5. Matthews: Palin Causes Most Strife Since Abe Lincoln

    6. Maureen Dowd: Palin Making Ignorance “Chic”

    B. Michele Backmann “Un-prejudiced” Reporting

    1. Rolling Stone: Michele Bachmann “Bats**t Crazy Psychopath With ‘Terminator Testicles”

    2. WAPost: Bachmann “Barbie With Fangs”

    3. NYTimes: “Is Bachmann the New Palin?”

    C. Ronald Reagan “Unbiased” Coverage

Newsweek: Ronald Reagan an “Intuitive Idiot Genius”

Newsweek editor Evan Thomas, on Inside Washington in September of 1999, claimed Ronald Reagan’s legacy was the result of the fact Reagan had a “had kind of an intuitive idiot genius.”

    2. Hitchens: Reagan Stupider Than a Hedgehog

    3. 1980’s Popular Liberal Media Opinion: Reagan an Illiterate, Amiable Dunce:

Historian Edmund Morris, in his 874-page authorized biography, concludes Reagan is simply incomprehensible, an airhead who has lived a charmed life. Diplomat Clark Clifford calls him an “amiable dunce,” and Nicholas von Hoffman claims it “humiliating to think of this unlettered, self-assured bumpkin being our president.” Tip O’Neill flat out said in public, “He knows less than any president I’ve every known.” Anthony Lewis of the New York Times claimed he had only a “seven-minute attention span.” Author Gail Sheehy declared he was “half asleep” while he was president.

    D. Barack Obama’s “Unbiased” Coverage

    1. Michelle Obama: “Fortunately, We Have Help From The Media”

    2. TIME & Other Media Pretend Stimulus Worked

    3. Time & MSM: Obamacare Constitutional

How about not calling anybody “a flake?” How about that for a simple proposition? Glenn Beck would still have a career at Fox News if he had not made spurious, hateful criticism of Obama and the Democrats such a major theme of his show. On the Left, Keith Olbermann would still be at MSNBC if he had not been repeatedly attacking Republicans on a personal level as frequently seen on his worst persons in the world. There is great wisdom at keeping differences on a substantive as opposed to personal level. Glenn Beck and Keith Olbermann could each vouch for this fact through their own experiences in cable news.

It’s funny to me that the week after Chris Wallace defends himself vehemently against Stewart for not being a squawking pigeon for the right wing power hoarders he attempts to use a ‘left wing’ line of questioning against Michelle Bachmann (to create the veiled impression that he’s not a tool? who knows?!) and then he goes on to apologize (to firmly prove to everyone that he IS a right wing tool bag). Quite a funny bit of political irony if you can read between the lines.

It is a nice dose of political irony. Fox News has been tarred and feathered a right wing partisan operation. Rightfully so. It has become the gatekeeper for Republican Party presidential contenders. The news organization financially supports Republican Party organizations. Most importantly, it is run by former GOP operatives most prominent among them is Roger Ailes, the leading communications operative for George H.W. Bush.
And so in a vain effort to appear less partisan by attacking a Republican, Chris Wallace gets completely shot down by his superiors. Not just political irony, but political humor i might add. Beware O’Reilly, Hannity, and all the other Republican party hosts. Attack fellow Republicans at your own peril!! By the way, be careful with such an insightful comment on this site. A lot of the people who come here just offer up knee jerk reactions.

Wow! In a week where Chris Wallace does a great interview with Jon Stewart, it’s strange to see him apologizing for a good and logical journalistic question about Bachmann being a ‘flake’. She may be a great parent and helpful in her community, but from everything I’ve seen or read about her she is an extremely reactionary person. I’m sure that we will be flooded with information shortly about her views from her abhorrence of gays and wanting to do away with social security and Obamacare to her slavish attitudes to the uberrich. Something that the rightwing should understand – your poor judgment of character and lack of intellectual curiosity is what got us into the mess we’re in. You thought Ronald Reagan was the George Washington of our age and you had stars in yours eyes about Bush II. Do you think we’re going to trust you when you start gushing about how great and wonderful a leader Michele Bachmann is. Never again are we going to let you choose our leaders. Fortunately, the demographics in America are rapidly changing and we may be moving out of the danger zone. Hopefully, with last year’s election you’ve had your last gasp.

  • labman57

Upcoming Bachmann political ad: “I am not a flake. I’m like you …”

I would really like to see someone actually challenge Bachmann during a debate or interview by making her defend the long shopping list of baseless accusations and reality-devoid proclamations that she has made during the past 2-3 years.

Typical exchange between Michele and an interviewer:
“So Congresswoman Bachmann, tell us about your views regarding the health care reform legislation that Congress passed last year.”
“Obamacare is socialism …”, followed by a wide grin and bug-eyed stare at the camera. And when asked to elaborate, she’ll reply “Obamacare is socialism …” while grinning and giving another creepy stare.

I think that the Republican Party as a whole is ready to nominate a woman, …. but it ought to be one that has a reasonable chance to actually win. It would also be wise to nominate someone who:
    - doesn’t have a penchant for making accusations or basing public policy proposals on rumor, innuendo, and unsubstantiated anecdotes
    - can discuss relevant issues without invoking God, and
    - doesn’t feel compelled to proclaim that those with opposing points of view are somehow less American than those who support her.

Bachmann is just another delusional tea party brown-nosing homophobe who pretentiously claims to be doing “God’s work” — using cherry-picked biblical passages to justify her brand of social intolerance and religious self-righteousness.

In addition, someone who regards herself as the Queen of White Tea could possibly win the GOP nomination, but she is much too far from the ideological mainstream to garner enough support from the rest of the voting populace to win a presidential election.

President Obama thanks President Obama in teleprompter screw-up

“The president embarrassed America and showed the world just how stupid he really is last night.”

That’s how the media would have reported last night’s White House screw-up if President Bush were still in office. But we doubt that President Obama will receive the same harsh treatment.

    Here’s what happened:

Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen was giving a speech when he realized he was repeating the same words President Obama had just read from the same teleprompter. Cowen stopped, turned to the president and said, “That’s your speech.”

Obama laughed. Oh, how he laughed. It was the laugh of a man who was thinking, “Damn, I’m glad that wasn’t me.”

Then he compounded the problem by walking up to the podium, staring into his trusty teleprompter and giving Cowen’s remarks instead of his own.

In the words of Fox News, “President Obama thanked President Obama for inviting everyone over.”

Joe Biden was once busted for stealing a British politician’s speech. But at least he was smart enough not do it right in front of the guy.

Obama is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he was the president of the Harvard Law Review. He worked as a civil rights attorney in Chicago and taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004. He served three terms representing the 13th district in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004.

Following an unsuccessful bid against the Democratic incumbent for a seat in the United States House of Representatives in 2000, Obama ran for United States Senate in 2004. Several events brought him to national attention during the campaign, including his victory in the March 2004 Democratic primary and his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in July 2004. He won election to the U.S. Senate in Illinois in November 2004. His presidential campaign began in February 2007, and after a close campaign in the 2008 Democratic Party presidential primaries against Hillary Rodham Clinton, he won his party’s nomination. In the 2008 presidential election, he defeated Republican nominee John McCain, and was inaugurated as president on January 20, 2009. In October 2009, Obama was named the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Her answer on gay marriage was incoherent at best and a tapdance at the least.
Her answer to the flake query was actually better, but a simple no would have been good as well.

Bachmann does need to pare down her answers- I understand the lawyer and constitutionalist in her coming out, but she should have made her answer short and sweet. She has a tendency to explain too much.

He sometimes asks questions that are very blunt and I don’t see anything wrong with it. I just watched it, I really don’t think Stewart was disrespectful at all. Stewart asked Obama a question, “was it possible that he was too idealistic on the changes he wanted to make” and he said something about it is tough to know if even you know what you want out of the health care bill, and Obama got really defensive and said something about he is tired of the pundits saying this stuff. He did call him “dude” but that was after he said Larry Summer was doing a “heck of a job”, which was GWB’s like about Michael Brown and he said “you don’t want to use that phrase, dude”, it might have been a little disrespectful but he didn’t mean it in a negative way. Stewart laughed throughout the interview and was pretty good natured to the President. It is funny that the most angry you see Obama is when he is talking to supposed “liberal” interviewers. If you want to see disrespectful I urge you to watch the interview that Bill O’Reilly did with the President during the Super Bowl, that was disrespectful to the point of embarrassment for the way O’Reilly behaved. He actually asked him “does it disturb you that so many people hate you?”

I don’t think Chris Wallace owes anybody an apology. I don’t think she would of answered the question if she thought it to be offensive. She knows that some people think that about her. We have yet to hear any serious coverage from the national media of Obama’s hundreds of gaffes while in the White House, just as we heard little of his “57 or 58 states” remark and other gaffes on the campaign trail, such as the six-month string that produced these doozies:

    * The Selma March in 1965 did not contribute to his birth in 1961.
    * Kansas tornadoes in May 2007 killed 12 people, not “ten thousand”.
    * Afghans do not speak Arabic.
    * Within 24 hours, Obama reversed his assertion that Iran did not pose a “serious threat” to the US to an assertion that the threat is “grave”.
    * Declaring that Memorial Day honors an “unbroken line of fallen heroes — and I see many of them in the audience here today“
    * Saying that his uncle liberated Auschwitz
    * Asserted that the Nuremberg tribunals offered habeas corpus and appeal rights
    * Referred to “the bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor“

Did any of the national media ask Barack Obama in the summer of 2008 if he was a “flake”?

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) said she wasn’t accepting the apology of Fox anchor Chris Wallace, who asked her Sunday if she was a “flake.”

Bachmann rejected an apology from Wallace, who challenged whether the Tea Party-aligned congresswoman was serious in her bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

“I think that it’s insulting to insinuate that a candidate for president is less than serious,” Bachmann said in an interview on ABC when asked about Wallace’s apology, which he posted online.

“Those are the small issues,” Bachmann said when specifically pressed about whether she accepted the apology. “I’m focused on the big one.”

We know that if Bachman frosted her hair she would be a “frosted flake”, and that if Obama branded his own flakiness it would be a “bran flake”, but did you know that if Bachman were to back the ethanol farmer subsidies, she would be a “corn flake”. As for Wallace, he regrets using flake, and thinks he may have been better off with grape nuts.

    There’s that filthy mouth, again.

Of course, the apology tends to establish that the question was not legitimate for any purpose.

Please, no more foul and filthy responses.

I think it was a fair, although awkward, question…some people do think she’s a flake, and that gave the world the opportunity to see how she might react to ‘name-calling’…something that happens often when you are the president!

Chris Wallace didn’t do anything wrong. It does seem the most important thing was missed here. Bachmann show she really may be a flake. Did you hear her insinuate that Dems are responsible for Swine Flu outbreaks? She’s not right for the White House. We deserve better.

Chris Wallace’s question should have been, “You’re a bit of a flake, aren’t you? Go on and admit it and then the rest of the interview will go much more smoothly.”

The entire process of women in politics is hated by Chris Wallace. He is a weak link in the Fox News Network. He needs to go sit in the spot Juan Williams had before he was fired. Fox News should return the favor. We do not need two Juan Williams at Fox. Say good buy Wallace and Fox do America a favor bring back Beck. BecK teaches you to think and wallace teaches you to change channels. FOX WAKE UP

Chris was doing what his Saudi masters and RINO repubs want. Attack a strong conservative woman who cares about America. FOX is 20% owned by Saudi prince- all tread carefully with news involving Muslim terrorists and mid-east news.

  • Nature Freak

    From the Washington Times today:

“Rep. Michele Bachmann kicked off her presidential campaign on Monday in Waterloo, Iowa, and in one interview surrounding the official event she promised to mimic the spirit of Waterloo’s own John Wayne.

The only problem, as one eagle-eyed reader notes: Waterloo’s John Wayne was not the beloved movie star, but rather John Wayne Gacy, the serial killer”.

If twenty % of you is owned by someone who does not even let woman drive, image the impact on the political commentary at Fox. This is really outrageous. Notice how foxy all the Fox girls are? Isn’t that really kind of cynical? None of them would be able to even drive over there. let alone be allowed to walk around with all that make up, shawl-less.

I’m sorry, I asked a woman with a history of making flakey comments if indeed she is a flake. I know this goes against the Fox News standard of asking GOP members anything but pre-screened softball questions during interviews in order to present them in the best possible light. I have been repreminded by my bosses and made to make this public apology. My pride was wounded by my recent interview with Jon Stewart and in an attempt to salvage my reputation and Fox News credibility I overreacted and crossed a line, for thet I am truly sorrry. Fox viewers rest assured this will not happen again. In the future I will reserve legitimate, tough, probing questions for democrats. On ocassion, for appearance sake, I may be required to ask a conservative a semi-tough question but only after they have been provided the questions in advance and given time to formulate an appropriate response. Thank you for your continued unwavering support.

    Sincerely

    Chris Wallace

First Reggie Brown is snatched off stage as soon as he starts to make a joke about Bachmann now Chris Wallace is forced to immediatly apologize for asking Bachmann a legitimate question hours before she proves she is a flake by announcing she has the spirit of a serial killer. It’s obvious the GOP has closed ranks and will not tolerate any negative light being shown on Bachmann by any of it’s controled outlets. Maybe the powers that be in the GOP have already picked Bachmann to go up against President Obama hoping the novelty of a woman candidate can overcome the history making election of America’s first black President.

Will Chris Wallace be asking Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman if they belong to a cult? Will he ab asking Barak Obama if he really does hate white people? Somehow, I doubt it. Seems like old white guys feel like Republican women are fair game.

He was trying to help her by giving her a chance to blow that silly issue away with a smile and a joke, but she muffed it. His intent was good. Bachman didn’t handle it, and now makes it worse by making a big deal out of it.

Bachmann is a decent politician with two law degrees and should never have been asked such a silly question.

However i do believe that a journalist has the right to question a candidate whether they are serious or not despite how many degrees they have.

What about Chris Wallaces’ father – Mike Wallace – Didn’t he write a book about being bi-polar? Who’s the flake here. I’m sick of these wimpy white men who parade themselves off as being unbiased but protect someone like Obama, Biden, Pelosi, and Reid! They disgust me – and I think Chris Wallace should be FIRED!

  • donalan

Chris, you have got to stop letting the truth slip out of your mouth on air. “We tell the other side of the story…” “are you a flake?”

You wont get ahead a FOX Mews doing this. Better have a talk with Steve Douchey – he is much better at reading script than you.

This is a prime example of “GOTHCHA” journalism. A page cloned from Chris Mathews.

Fack and flacky were trite and tawdry “prepared” nouns and adverbs to spice poorly thought out questions from someone who masquerades as a responsible journalist.

“I messed up” Yes you did. This is a band-aide apology to cover yourself from the thoughtful backlash of informed viewers.

Congratulations Mike, you managed to alienate a long time informed viewer. You will not be watched in my household again.

Wallace leaves so much to be desired – he is arrogant, self-obcessed, and self-important.

You could do better — much better. Retire him early and he will never be missed at Fox.

BTW, when he chairs the Bret Baire’s evening news, I switch to CNN.

You know what I say Deebee? I am sick and TIRED of these wimpy, sorry, no good, middle age white men (with hard ons on the DL) who parade themselves as so called pundits without bias (like a good portion of the “Fair and Balanced” punk suckers on Fox fas well as talk radio) who GO TO NO LIMITS TO DEFEND THESE SIMPLETON, IGNORANT, BIGOTED white women like Palin and Bachmann TO NO AVAIL!!! Yet disrespect TO NO AVAIL Michelle Obama who is by far WAAAY MORE INTELLIGENT than these hateful mean girl broads!!! I AM SICK of seeing the likes of Insanity Hannity defending his idiotic girlfriends without fail as well as Greta Van Sustern’s sick girlfriend crush on Palin. On the flipside of this matter I am sick of seeing MSNBC obessive compulsive fellas of Lawrence O’Donnell and Chris Matthews commenting on EVERY WAKING THING ON BOTH OF THESE BROADS!!! To see a Chris Wallace punk out due to peer pressure and hate mail on he was mean to Michelle (as much mean and hateful bull she has said) speak VOLUMES of the Fox news pressure to not step out of the GOP line according to the rules of Roger Ailes!! • Armageddon T Thunderbird

Why is Chris Wallace apologizing? He has absolutely no need to apologize as he was only stating factual truth regarding Bachman. She is flakey and like a good little right wing tea bagger, she is constantly re-writing history for the benefit of those who do not embrace truth. Chris Wallace has no need to make any apologies here as he did nothing wrong. He was actually quite nice about the entire thing. Unfortunately right wingers live in an alternate universe where you almost always have to apologize to some idiot or cloud of idiot simply for being honest and telling the truth. The same think recently happened to Newt Gingrich when he expressed the truth regarding “right wing social engineering” as well as that GOP plan to further fleece the middle and lower class known as the “Paul Ryan” plan.

  • Dcowart

The Left is going to stay left and the Right is going to stay right but for us that want a good debate and to be fair, we do not want the commentor to take sides, we want him to ask the hard question but fair one’s so we can make up our own decision but Chris has proven to me that over the past many months he is moving to the Left and I am just about to the point where I may stop watching Chris Wallace.
