Conservatives Call ‘Botched’ Romney Attack Rick Perry’s ‘Worst Moment Of Debate’

video

Conservatives around the blogosphere widely agree, Rick Perry had a bad night and the consensus for his ‘jump the shark’ moment came when he gave a long-winded, stammering response to Mitt Romney, who had disputed Perry’s charge that he was ‘Obama-lite’:

“I think Americans just don’t know sometimes which Mitt Romney they’re dealing with,” Perry hesitatingly said. “Is it the Mitt Romney that was on the side of against the Second Amendment before he was for the Second Amendment? Was it — was before he was before the social programs, from the standpoint of he was for standing up for Roe v. Wade before he was against Roe v. Wade? He was for Race to the Top, he’s for Obamacare, and now he’s against it. I mean, we’ll wait until tomorrow and — and — and see which Mitt Romney we’re really talking to tonight.”

Romney simply countered, “I’ll use the same term again: Nice try,”

Many conservative bloggers felt Perry squandered his best opportunity to put a glove on Romney and gave a bungled come back. Michelle Malkin called it Perry’s “cringe-worthiest moment” and that he “botched what should have been his most potent attack on Mitt Romney’s chronic flip-flopping…Any random high schooler at the CPAC conference in Washington could have done better than this,” Malkin jabbed. “If this is how Perry’s going to take Obama on in debates, we’re in trouble. Someone inject him with some Red Bull and a dash of Herman Cain’s personality.”

Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey called the moment a “spectacular failure” for Perry. “Perry went for an obviously rehearsed attack on Romney as a flip-flopper. There’s nothing wrong with that as a debate strategy — if you can deliver the attack,” Morrissey zinged. “He needs a debate coach, and if he already has one, he needs to fire a debate coach and hire another.”

Like Karl Rove said, Rick Parry isn’t ready for primetime.

  • Anonymous

Sarah Palin was the big winner in this debate, as the badlands Boadicea prepares to strike while the wannabees waffle, wobble, wane, & wilt by the wayside.

  • Glutton

I don’t think Huntsman could ascend too much.  Taking the job as Obama’s ambassador to China was the kiss of death for his chances at the nomination.  I think Ron Paul is finding himself to be in great shape.  Bachmann’s star is dimming.  Santorum is a complete joke.  The rest of the Republican field isn’t very impressionable unless Palin joins the hunt.

He’s now in a position where he just has to hang around the top 3 until Rick Parry falls and then he’s in the chase with Romney down the stretch.  Biggest problem with Ron Paul if you’re Mitt Romney is that Ron Paul is probably not going to go away.  He’ll just keep having money bombs until the convention.  Since he has nothing to lose, he might even run 3rd party.

All of a sudden, Ron Paul has become very dangerous in the upcoming election.

Its all going according to plan. Ive been saying all alone, the GOP does not want him to be the nominee. They want a republican in the white house and Romney has the best chance. Huntsman is good for them as well. But im not sure how the evangelicals or tea party people are going to react to all this. If the GOP gets Romney in there there seriously could be a tea party/evangelical third party candidate who will guarantee a loss.

The strongest candidate  will be Romney, and he’ll lose by a hair to Obama.

I believe that this weeks polls come out, Perry will still be ahead of Romney…..well at least I hope he is.

Here is a good one from an Anti-Illegal Immigration Group:

“Rick Perry proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is not the
right choice for America by supporting these radical illegal immigration
attracting measures,” said William Gheen, President of ALIPAC in a
statement. “Perry’s support for in-state tuition for illegals forces
taxpayers to pay to replace their own children in the limited seats in
    our colleges!”

ALI-PAC claims that in-state tuition for illegal aliens is opposed by
81% of Americans, and has defeated measures allowing it in over 20
    states.

How do you like this one?

Fox News, conservative commentator Byron York:

Republicans. To them, to Republican ears, it sounds like a liberal
    talking.”

Good, that just moves Dr. Ron Paul further up the ladder.

I was entertaining Perry for a while, but the pussy went and flip-flopped on Social Security — claiming that the illegal ponzi scheme isn’t the illegal ponzi scheme that it is after all. And then the dumbass said it should be returned to the states. It should be eliminated, you could do it today. There is no trust fund, it’s fucking debt that Congress skims off the top every year so they can lie and say that Clinton ran a surplus for instance.

  • Glutton

  • Irish189

Heres the simple truth and its one i think too many people forget on the message board

    1. Talking points don’t win the election by themselves, you have to be able to not only debate those in your party for the nomination you have to be able to debate the incumbent or the other parties nominee and that means being able to think on your feet

    2. President Obama, you can love or hate the man but the fact remains is that he is very good in the debate arena and if you don’t bring your A game you will get carved, if that was Perry’y or Bachman’s A game then its not even a contest, it’d be worse worse of a beating then Marvin Frazier took from Mike Tyson

    3. You have to appeal to the nation as a whole and trying to pass laws or reinstate ones that could be seen as discriminatory to just promote a conservative agenda based on religion will not win favors with the public this time around, the poll numbers simply don’t back it up, don’t touch it and don’t bother it later.

Newt is a good debater but hes not popular, Huntsman seems to be getting more comfortable and seems to be making progress, Santorum was a little disgraceful in the eyes of many regarding gays in the military, Romney looked fine but didn’t do anything that really made him stand out in terms of why he is going to be better then the current, basically saying  “im not him” is not a good reason,

  • Re-Elect Obama 2012

Huh? Obama has never been proven in debates. When he campaigned for POTUS IN 2008, he had no track record to attack. It’s easy to look good when you do nothing to attack. And Obama had the ever-worshipping media ensuring that anyone who dared attack him labelled a racist. Obama will be slaughtered in 2012 debates. He lacks the smarts and successful experience to do anything but read a teleprompter.

Q: Who said this in the GOP debate: “You have no heart” unless you support using taxpayer money to provide special benefits to ILLEGALS.

    a. ANY lunatic-left d-cRAT socialist looking for fraudulent votes from ILLEGALS
    b. rick “I love ILLEGALS” perry

HINT: perry OPPOSES a fence to help control the border, he OPPOSES Arizona’s SB1070 ILLEGALS control law, he OPPOSES E-verify, he has not said a word against OBOZO-the-Clown’s executive order granting back-door AMNESTY to ILLEGALS (like his Uncle Omar) and Numbers USA, a group that supports immigration control, gives Perry a “D-“ for his positions supporting amnesty, open borders, and opposing border security.

A spectacular, epic failure on the part of Faux and the Tea Bagger candidates. Seriously….you cannot take these clowns as presidential material. Until Palin joins the hunt? It honestly shocks me to see that Republicans consider her a “strong candidate.” I mean, do you seriously understand her run-on sentences? She’s an incoherent mess of mashed-together talking points. It’s as if Democrats were sponsoring Alvin Greene as their “strong candidate.”

Obama won by a hair last election against McCain. Romney takes Florida its all over for Obama. The excitement and hope and change is long gone for President Zero. We need a person with business sense not a politician or a great speaking community organizer.

Why! Perry cant win with the center… independents wont vote for him or even come out to vote! Romney is the only one that can win. I rather see Romney in office then another four years of the community organizer.

Where’s the good zingers from last night?  Honestly, what I remember from the parts I saw were how funny the group is, and how strange to find a debate entertaining.  Both the candidates and the youtube/google format worked really well.

Newt had a really geat jab at Obama and the ‘new guy’ had a great line about his neighbor’s big dogs created more jobs than Pres. Obama.  Both zingers were well-delivered, made solid points and were huge hits of the night.

Where are these clips on mediate?  Don’t know…

    Newt’s line was ‘when your brother’s out of a job, it’s a recession, when you’re out of a job it’s a depression, and when Obama’s out of a job it’s a recovery.

  • Glutton

    LOL

  • Glutton

Paul’s chances of becoming #2 have become 50/50.  He’s generally #3 right now, and the Perry tree is about to fall.  I think it could very easily come down to Ron Paul versus Mitt Romney in the end.  Who knows, maybe if Paul builds enough momentum in the end, he could always run as a 3rd party.

  • Glutton

That’s actually a pretty good analysis.

  • Glutton

Obama went one on one with Hillary Clinton in 3 debates and came out on top for 2 of them.  There aren’t too many people who could pull that off.

  • Glutton

Also remember that people said that John McCain was unbeatable in town hall debates and Obama beat McCain in their town hall debate.   After that, McCain was done.

  • Rick Shoaf

The lie that SSI is part of the General Fund started during the Vietnam War to hide how much the war was actually costing.  There is currently about $2T in the trust fund.

  • Bob Uda

Rick Perry is a “flash in the pan” who had his day in the sun.  His campaign is over.  The guy claims to be a true conservative but he is a liberal with his illegal alien college financing policy and no-border-fence policy.  The guy is a better liberal than he is a conservative.  He should go and run Obama’s campaign as he did Algore’s campaign.

  • Glutton

    My debate analysis.

Mitt Romney didn’t do anything special, but he didn’t have to.  All he had to do was let Rick Parry bury himself.  I have to say I was sort of getting annoying with his “nice try” and “ha” responses to Rick Parry’s attacks.  Romney won because Parry lost.

Rick Santorum did pretty well considering it was a Google debate.  He
really went after Rick Parry on for giving in-state tuition to illegal
immigrants and not taking the necessary steps to secure the border.  He
came off as homophobic (again) and very ignorant when he said he would
bring back DADT but most Republicans think just like him, so I doubt if
that will hurt him too much.

Jon Huntsman showed me that in spite of being Obama’s ambassador to
China and supporting the notion that human activity is creating a
climatic imbalance, he makes up for it by being very fiscally
conservative and sensible.  He has a very strong tax plan but I doubt if
they care about the details of a tax plan in the Republican primaries.
    They want slogans.

Herman Cain came off as likable, especially when they brought up his cancer.  He smiled a lot, pushed his 999 plan, and said a lot of jive things.  I think this was probably his best debate thus far.

Newt Gingrich had a great moment when he quoted Reagan and tried to keep things from getting too hostile.  Although things are getting heated between Parry and Romney, Gingrich does seem to bring a sense of unity to the stage.

Gary Johnson really made the most of this debate time.  He should have been allowed in the other debates but I guess he’ll take what he could get.  He pushed the idea that he will have a balanced budget by 2013 which is something no one else on that state would ever dare say, and he comes off as a younger version of Ron Paul but newer.

Ron Paul is my favorite candidate, but I didn’t think he had a very good debate today.  Perhaps a big part of it was due to Gary Johnson saying the same things Ron Paul said, but getting more intrigue because he’s the new guy.  I don’t think he did bad, but he didn’t add to his momentum much today.  At the same time, he’s poised to make a move to being the #2 guy in the primaries if Rick Parry falls.

Michele Bachmann does a good job of keeping Rick Parry on defense, but she has a lot of trouble substantiating her claims.  I think her star shined too bright too fast and now she’s struggling to stay relevant.  This might be Sarah Palin’s opening to get in the race.

Rick Parry came off as a complete imbecile.  He didn’t have any sort of
economic plan ready, he got buried on illegal immigration, he seemed to
think that all Americans want America to be like Tesux.  I think he’s
    starting to crumble.

  • Glutton

LOL You had me until the very last line!

  • Glutton

It was funny watching Santorum get all over Rick Parry during a Google debate.

  • Glutton

Palin could debate and speak better than Parry.  If Palin joins the primaries, I could see her taking away a lot of votes from Rick Parry and Michele Bachmann.  Palin entering the scene could just bury 2 front running campaigns.

  • insideguy

Boy after watching that clip Perry is never going to win the nomination. He looked like Kim Delany up there on stage. I think he should declare a family crisis and get out before his reputation is totally destroyed and he becomes a laughing stock.

  • Anonymous

In a sane world, it would probably come down to Romney and Huntsman, but this is not a sane world.

  • Anonymous

Palin has zero to contribute. She has not yet said anything that makes sense on foreign policy, has not taken a stance on Social Security (and obviously doesn’t want to), and is just another Michele Bachmann, but without the debating experience.
Palin makes a good cheerleader, rousing a crowd to support conservative traditionalism or attack Obama and the Democrats, but not putting forward any plan of her own. She is all “Go team, GO!” or “Push ‘em back, way back!” Simple cheerleader stuff.
Besides, why would Palin give up a cushy job of cheer-leading for ten minutes per week that pays a million a year to take on a job that pays half as much and is full pressure 24/7/365?

The American people want to hear the candidates  views on what are impacting them.   If America want to listen to verbal slams they can tune into Hannity or Rush.

My biggest disappointment from the debatees were their detachment from reality.  This was true with alot the issues discuss, but especially education. They related to their own home experience and as parents how parents should be more involved with education and other childhood issues and choice.  They are talking from an unscale family perspective and not relating at all to the million of poor children whose parents could give a damm about them.  These are the kids that always get sweep under the rug and forgotten about. Bush attempted to do something about this with “no child left behind” and Obama hits on this everytime he speaks.  Kid are our future and that means all kids. To be a bona fide Presidential candidate you need to understand that and be willing to do something about it.

    2. You’ve got Huntsman who looks scared as shit every time someone even mentions his name.
    3. You’ve got Perry who can’t string a sentence together with a single piece of thread.
    4. You’ve got Romney who relentlessly stutters as if he’s trying to get out 100 different ideas out of his mouth at once.
    5. You’ve got Santorum throwing a hissy fit that his name shows up in a Google search.
    6. You’ve got Cain who likes to sing old slave ballads to a bunch of racists. And…
    7. You’ve got Ron Paul jumping up and down all the time looking like some antique Jack in the Box toy trying to get some attention.

THERE’S SOMETHING WRONG WITH EVERY ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE. Republican = retard, and by defending anyone of these sick, deranged mental patients, you prove you are a part of America’s problem… NOT its solution!

  • Glutton

Giving them in-state tuition doesn’t seem fair.  Technically, they should be paying international student rates which are even higher than out of state tuition rates.  You’re basically giving people a HUGE incentive to come here ILLEGALLY and PUNISHING those who try to do it the legal way.

I’m on the other side of the isle, but I’ve been saying Mitt’s going to get the nomination since the start of this… he’s more GOP establishment, and even though there are a lot of Tea Partiers out there, the national vote just won’t sway that far right.

Representatives are one thing, but the big stage is different. I’ll bet money on Mitt to get it. Watch the news cycle do it’s flavor of the day… think of that as the Republican weather. Mitt is more like climate in the respect that he covers more than just the far right in his party.

Criticizing Obama then was tantamount to being a labelled a member of the KKK.  Obama had absolutely zero experience, he had accomplished nothing as a politician.  Only his race prevented him from being pilloried for his lack of experience.  I’m sure you remember the visceral attacks on Sarah Palin, claiming lack of experience … even though she had dramatically more executive experience than Obama.  And when anyone (i.e. Geraldine Ferraro) deigned to bring this to light, she was made a pariah.  Hillary didn’t do well because she was already dealing with the perception that she was too shrill and ambitious to be effective.

Things have now changed.  Obama has a track record.  And it’s a horrific one.  And he’s made way, WAAAAYYYYY to many stupid mistakes and gaffes for anyone to extol his supposed brilliance.  IMHO, he makes George Bush look downright Yale honor grad-ish.

Mitt Romney will absolutely tear Obama up in a debate.  Obama simply lacks the comprehension of how money flows in the United States.  He knows only two things:  Talk, and tax.

McCain was a horrible choice for the GOP in 2008.  The GOP won’t repeat that mistake.

That whole debate was a joke.

It was 2 hours of watching Fox lob softballs at the  candidates….and watching Rick Perry implode.

I hate it when presidential debates use YouTube questions…only to ask the same kinds of questions that they would have asked anyway.

Perry is another Bush. A low IQ person, with little insight into history and a lack of any curiosity. He couldn’t do his homework when he was in college and was a D student. He managed in life to convince people he could be their patsy if they voted for him, and the monied interests found him to be their boy. If elected he will rely on people around him to do his thinking but will not question them, as Bush did, until he makes a big mistake, like invading a country who had nothing to do with the terrorists…………..It’s a pattern……………..

John McCain had Phil Gramm for his advisor, the man who passed the deregulated banks bill, and the commodities futures trading act, that causes your gas prices to go up from speculation. McCain stated he didn’t know anything about economics, and when the public found out he had Gramm as an advisor, people ran to Obama. Obama has had to learn on the job but has turned the corner now that he realized his advisers were a problem for him, as in Summers, Geithner, and Rubin. These kind of advisers are interlaced in both parties and will kill any bank regulation or commodities regulation, until you vote them out of office.

If you think that was bad, you can bet Sarah Palin would have been 100 times worse. Chris Christie would probably come in ther side by side with Rick Perry.

Asking Glutton to handicap the republican field is like asking a vegan which cut of beef is the best tasting.

    A) You dont know what you are talking about

    and

    B) Your motives are for republicans to lose, and so any analysis coming from you has to be viewed through that prism.

Right now Obama would lose to “Not Obama” on the ballot…

So those that are in the know in the Democrat party are in panic mode, the rest, in denial.

He said that because he is a Perry supporter, as is most of Redstate.  That site is overwhelmingly neocon, compassionate conservative, interventionist.

Do you really think people care about which of your establishment pretty boys got the best soundbites in?Ron Paul stands for liberty and freedom.  He understands free market economics and how we got into the mess we are in.  He is the only one who can do the right things to get us out of it.Luckily he is reaching critical mass. Maybe but he does have more character.  He didn’t quit his job.

  • expatpatriot

That was painful. Even I felt sorry for Perry.

It was kind of like his performance when quzzed about abstinance education vs sex education: a tongue-swallowing, lines-half-learned, goofy-gestured debacle. Perry has these mental spaz attacks when he’s likely to say almost anything. Not a good idea for The Leader of the Free World, if you know what I mean.

This guy ain’t presidential timber. He’s not even presidential styrofoam.

  • expatpatriot

No thanks. No interest from our side, I’m pretty sure.

  • expatpatriot

That’s why I want as many of these debates as possible now (before the nomination): so America gets a really good look at how whacked-out and scary the Republicans are. No Republican contender is going to make it out of the debate season without a portfolio of appalling sound bites that the Dems can beat him or her with throughout the subsequent campaign.

After the nomination, Dems should limit face-to-face debates with the Republican to two or three so as to avoid drinking dry the ocean of scorn being precipitated from the ‘Lican debates now under way.

    Run, Sarah, Run!

Rick Perry isn’t nearly deranged and disliked enough to absolutely ensure Obama is re-elected — but you are!

Huntsman could sneak ahead if Romney and Perry go down in a mutual death spiral. He’s also shown hints of charisma which — if developed — could top the rest of the field.

Cain’s got more baggage than the Packers’ equipment bus, and is rather a nasty fucker in his own way. IMO, he’s like Bachmann: Dead Pol Walking (along with Paul and Santorum, although Santorum is extra-stale).

  • expatpatriot

Please note: if you drink enough Kool-Aid, you will drown.

Obama has shown over and over again that he can speak extemporaneously as well as with a prompter. If you guys think you’re going to grab the White House back because Obama has a working knowledge of public speakers’ best practices, then you’ve lost the thread already.

The point being that while Obama now has a record, that record is defensible — by Obama. He is his own most articulate supporter.

By those who basically agree with his positions, Obama is criticized primarily for not going far enough, not for going too far. It’s only on the right that he’s seen as some sort of radical. From the center left, he looks rather like a moderate Republican (a vanished species).

And he’s not going to be attacked from the left by the Republican nominee. And he’ll do just fine in debate. None of the current Republican contenders could best him in debate, although Huntsman might get close; maybe Romney.

  • expatpatriot

Nope, the mistake will be of an entirely different character. Rather than try to win by nominating someone who can actually see the center from where he’s standing, the ‘Licans will nominate someone driven so far to the right that he or she can never get back to the light.

Yeah.  She would be a hundred times worse, but if she had done the same as Rick Perry, the Teabaggers would be defending her and blaming the media.

The problem with all of the candidates (except, perhaps, Romney and Gingrich) is that they don’t know how to talk in anything other than slogans and soundbites.

These candidates are just not informed on the issues…and the audience wasn’t looking for that.

You could tell that the audience was looking for who could insult Obama the most and tell the best jokes……because whenever a candidate tried to give a substantive answer, the audience just sat silently with no response.

  • Anonymous

My problem with these candidates is that none of them is making a persuasive, cohesive argument for conservative governance.

All they’ve done so far is outline a series of opportunistic policy positions to oppose Obama.

But they’re not making a persuasive argument about why a conservative approach to government would truly be better.

As a Democrat, I’ll readily acknowledge that I’m predisposed not to agree with them…..but I can at least acknowledge when someone is making a strong case for themselves.  And these candidates aren’t doing that.

As I predicted from the outset, when Perry’s own record as Governor started getting vetted, this clown would soon be seen for what he is, a RINO. He loves to tout the number of jobs created in Texas but, what he doesn’t tell you is, over 80% of those jobs went to immigrants, legal and illegal! We have over 25-million legal citizens either out of work, or underemployed and this scrounge thinks it’s just fine to support illegal alien parasites, and maintaining the number of legal immigrant numbers entering the U.S. even when legal American citizens are getting laid off? Why, because the employers in Texas are doing everything possible to keep their costs down, and their profits up, even if it means shafting American families, and Perry’s OK with that!! It’s not about having a “heart”, it’s about what it’s always about, MONEY!!
This scumbag Liberal government has done a good job spinning this issue to the point that makes the criminal appear to be the VICTIM, and the real victims, the American families, the criminals for demanding their sovereign rights be enforced?!! All the while, American families pay the price for the uncontrolled legal and illegal flooding of workers who dilute the workforce to the point that, the once achieved high living standard of the U.S. will soon mirror the likes of third-world toilets like Mexico!

Man! that was hard to watch, but I could feel his pain. Another debate like that and depending what the polls show, Sarah Palin just might come out of the closet and from behind twitter and faceback to join this crowd. I can’t image Palin and Bachmann on the same stage. What a disaster for conservatives. Come on Christie, the country needs you. Despite your moderate views on social issues, you would get the independent vote, which Perry can’t do, while Romney is a flip flopper, and Huntsman has no chance of getting the nomination although, he’s the most articulate and presidential.

  • caconservative

I’ll take a talented boring American over that…whatever it is, we are putting up with now! Romney may not be the most exciting but he is the most business talented on the stage and that’s exactly what we need now!

Was it was before he was before the social programs..uhm from the standpoint of he was for ahm… standing up for Roe vs Wade before he was against vers uh… Roe vs Wade uhm… he was uhm… for race to the top uhm… he’s… for Obama care now he’s against it.     -Rick Perry

This was probably the worst moment, but a close second was his answer on Pakistan. I had to say, what the hell is he talking about. It was like listening to Sarah Palin again,  But, should Perry have a similar performance at the next debate, she just may get into the race and lose a $100 bet. I can’t imagine Palin with that squeeky annoying voice and Bachmann on the same stage talking right after one another. It would be like pushing the replay button.

Excellent point. The YouTube question from a conservative school teacher might be the best example.

Some questions I would have liked to have been asked:

What additional spending cuts would you make and would they include the DOD budget and foreign aid to our allies in the Middle East, including Israel?

Which specific EPA and banking regulations would you eliminate? We Americans deserve a better response than the  the constant applause line “regulations are bad”.

Which specific programs and policies would you implement to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and would you eliminate either farm subsidies or oil subsidies?

    all valid points. thanks
