George Will: Gingrich Has Gone From Being ‘The Most Disliked Politician In America’ To GOP Frontrunner

video

On This Week today, George Will took on Newt Gingrich’s ascendancy in Republican polls, his battle with Mitt Romney over which of them is the more electable candidate, and wondered if many of Gingrich’s new supporters were aware of his past political history.

Will reacted to last night’s Republican debate by asserting Gingrich was established as a “solid frontrunner,” and right now the biggest question in the race is whether he or Romney is more electable. In order to understand the significance of Gingrich’s place in contemporary politics, Will reminded everyone of what Gingrich was famous for in the 90s.

“Newt Gingrich was a shooting star in this town, this prominent Republican from 1994 to 1998. He was, at that point, the most disliked politician in America, probably, and he was deposed by his own party. He says, ‘I’m the most electable.’”

Will also brought up Romney’s claim that he is not a career politician, pointing to the roughly two dozen elections Romney has been in. When Christiane Amanpour asked Will if he thought Jon Huntsman would be an ideal candidate to come out as the new frontrunner, Will once again disclosed his wife’s ties to the Rick Perry campaign before admitting voters may want to see another candidate fighting with Gingrich and Romney in the top tier.

Given Newt’s repulsive nature, it will be fitting if he is the nominee since most conservatives on this board have claimed it didn’t matter who the nominee is, since a ham sandwich could beat Obama.   Well, I look forward to putting that to the test with Newt as the nominee.

Initially in the Repub nomination campaigns, Gingrich was far from my preferred candidate. BUT, with every attack on Gingrich by the out-of-touch, self-serving, incompetent Ruling Class Establishment Repubs (like Will), my support for Gingrich grows stronger and stronger.

Exactly.  Republicans hate intelligent people, even within their own party.  That’s why the Republican Party is a party of morons.

  • Anonymous

His self-immolation is assured, but you’ll just have to hope he waits until he gets the nomination before he does it.

By the way, if Newt Gingrich can come back, and be the frontrunner for PRESIDENT(!!!), then Republicans better be worried about Anthony Weiner’s inevitable landslide victory in a decade or so.

    Jon Huntsman….?
You have to actually break three percent to come out as the front runner.
It is absurd to even mention this guy’s name anymore and Christiane comes across as a twit for even suggesting it and so does Will for agreeing with it.
We do not install front runners based on whatever candidate liberal Obama supporting media hacks like Amanpour like  the best.

He’s gone from suck to blow!

Don’t count out at least Donald together with Guiliani, perhaps with Sarah.

Nah, it only seems that way because the nuts are running the asylum.

This is the article Will was talking about.

    Another one worth reading…

These are articles by conservatives. So, no kvetching about “libruls.”

Even though I’m very happy at the sorry state of the repug/tprty, We libs prefer worthy opponents.
My suggestion is that you people pull your heads out of your butts, and find someone that can be a Serious challenge to “Smooth B” or face another Six years. Then what will be the excuse?

  • expatpatriot

And while I strongly disagree with him on about 80% of what he believes and proposes, Huntsman is at least serious and not flamboyantly unelectable like the rest of the field. Even Ron Paul (who I disagree with about 75% of the time) has steadfastness and conviction on his side.

The rest of ‘em are escapees from a reality show called “I’m A Crackpot — Put Me In The White House.”

I’m beginning to think that there’s been a wave of Collective Amnesia or Early Onset Alzheimers in the average Republican electorate……..or they are just plain STUPID.

George Will and his enabling conservative ilk broke the Grand Old Party ~ and now must own it. ALL of it ~ even the icky, slimy bits that trickle about mooching off the carcass. What a pathetic bunch.

    Don’t forget backward!

If what you say is true you must love Obama because a newt nomination assures an obama second term.  If you believe newt can win the general, you are smoking too much crack.  Shame on you.  You are allowing another 4 years of obama.  Smarten up.

    George Will is correct.

The problem for the GOP is that they have forgotten that the rest of the country outside of the GOP base thinks Gingrich is a total sleaze.

The GOP base will get Newt 35-40% of the vote. But you have to get some moderates and leaners to win.

    Thanks for the links :-)

If we nominate Newt than you are correct.  We are just plain stupid.  This is our election to lose with what we have in the WH now.  To nominate a corrupt, inmoral douche like Gingrich hands the election to Obama.  As a conservative republican, I am sickened that so many GOPers would stoop this low to stupid to seriously consider nominating him.  Therefore, I agree with everything you say.  If Newt gets the nomination, I, along with millions of other rational republicans will vote for Ron Paul.  Obama gets a second term.

If the dregs of the GOP nominate Gingrich than you get your wish.  Another term for Obama. I am ashamed at the moronic, far right wing of my party.  They compare Gingrich to Reagan.  Gingrich compares himself to Reagan.  Only evangelical nut jobs would consider voting for Newt.  They will destroy the GOP.  If they do, then they have to live with it and I don’t want to hear Hannity, Limbaugh or any other right wing dirtbag complain about Obama.  We have a chance to win and they are shooting themselves and the country in the head by irrational thinking that somehow Gingrich can win in the general.

What a train wreck of a panel, you have Bianca Jagger, er Christine Amnanpour, extremist Muslim sympathizer, George Will who is a RINO Liberal Republican that picks losers, The CUBS, Mitch Daniels, Tim Pawlenty, was against Reagan, bashes Sarah Palin, he is what is known as an educated idiot, wrong on most issues. They should scrap that show, it has never been the same since David Brinkley chaired it.

    “Smooth B”

  • http://mediamatters.org/ Leedog

Shows how desperate and ignorant Republican voters are to backing a person like Newt!!

Republicans are in a great position to win the election based on the state of the economy… but of course, will blow it and lose based on the type of people they’re nominating!!

  • Anonymous

and democrats are what?  you guys backed a communist radical.

  • http://mediamatters.org/ Leedog

Sure we did!! Lol!! Is that what Fox News told you to believe??

A reminder of the intellectual acumen of the Murcuhn masses.

The “nuts” have been “running the asylum” for over 30 years now. There’s nobody else left to run it at this point, don’t you think?

Very astute. I only bring this up because you and I know there will all sorts of excuses when disaster strikes. I just don’t and cannot understand the hatred for Huntsman, and Romney when Ray Charles can see that is the Repugs best hope!?
