Geraldo vs. Stossel’s “Ultimate Mustache” Battle

geraldo_10-29People have mixed feelings on NBC’s new Late Night host Jimmy Fallon, but how can you go wrong with this image?

Fallon announced a match in the Ultimate Mustache Fighting league between Geraldo Rivera and new Fox hire John Stossel. Then the mustaches fought.

“I don’t think Fox is big enough for both of those mustaches,” said Fallon, and then it was on.

“‘Stache Bash ’09″ was a fullblown parody of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, complete with an intro video, steelcage ring, excited announcers and even a fake commercial for another Spike TV show.

“Never in the history of television sports have we seen such a spectacle,” said Fallon after the match, but we won’t spoil which ‘stache takes the crown.

Here’s the clip:

I just watched some of Fallon’s first show on Hulu, and he did seem pretty nervous, and the De Niro interview was not great. He seemed more comfortable when Justin Timberlake came out.
I know De Niro’s a huge star and that helps bring in viewers, but it would have been better to have someone else as the first guest, maybe just move Justin up, give Jimmy a guest that he can feel at ease with. Jimmy didn’t need the added pressure of interviewing a huge star like De Niro, who’s not exactly an easy interview for any of the established hosts out there. Plus, De Niro doesn’t really seem to jibe with Fallon’s target viewership, also evidenced by how young the audience seemed.
