Matthews Warns Santorum: You Better Apologize For The Bayer Aspirin As Contraception Remark

video

Hardball‘s Chris Matthews took Rick Santorum to task for supporter Foster Freisscontroversial comments on Thursday that “They used Bayer aspirin for contraceptions. The gals put it between their knees and it wasn’t that costly.” “If any woman votes for Rick Santorum after that comment today by his number one spokesman, I will be surprised,” Matthews exclaimed. “If he doesn’t fix this within a few hours, you can kiss off all the women voters in this country, and a lot of men.”

Matthews earlier noted that Freiss was representing a candidate who said “it would be fine for him if states outlawed the sale of birth control.” “You’re talking about a guy from an old era,” Matthews observed. “And he’s making a joke about women! Talk about an insulting comment. That was insulting!”

Give it a try, Chris! It might fix that thrill up your leg.

  • Anonymous

Chris Matthews apparently wants to make a big deal out an old man’s tired old joke, perhaps, becaus he may be trying to avoid talking about Obama’s Congressional Budget Office report that came out today.  It states that actual unemployment numbers are at 15%, that Obama is overstating the “positive” news.  Imagine that.  You can check this info. out on CBO.gov, and see the PDF file.  If I were MSNBC and CM, I wouldn’t want to talk about that, either.

  • Gloves T. Donahue

Should he apologize to you, Chris?

Are you taking it personally? Do you know about jokes? You think you’re a champion for women, Chris? How about teenage virgins? Why did you defend JFK last week against her claims in the book, and shrug off what he did?

Shouldn’t you apologize to Mimi Alford, who wrote a book about how JFK preyed upon her teenage self as an intern in the White House?

I know ” You’re talking about a guy from an old era,” … , Chris. A guy with no respect for teenage virgins, or his wife. But, that’s okay, it was JFK.

There’s that (D)ouble standard we all love.  Barack Obama can walk away from his own supporters, administration, actions, church, past,  words and deeds and Matthews would never ever call him on any of it but the Republican who might challenge him is responsible for anything anywhere that has any link to him no matter how casual.

Why does Santorum have to apologize for something he did not say when Obama never even takes responsibility for his own policies, his cabinet or administration…?

When will has ask Obama to apologize to the hundreds of dead Mexicans for Fast and Furious ?

  • Anonymous

I love watching you cons trying to deflect.

This is very very peculiar. Someone runs for office and alienates half the population? Huh?

  • Anonymous

If any Santorum fans/Conservatives/Liberals haters want to actually address the issue instead of changing the subject, that would be great. That’s okay. You’re probably waiting for tonight’s Hannity and tomorrow’s Rush to tell you what to think.
RUSH?!? SEAN??! A CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE IS IN TROUBLE AND I NEED YOUR HELP?!? WHAT SHOULD I THINK??!!

  • Anonymous

Without reading the comments… I bet republicans will comment about Fast & Furious, Media Matters, Obama and nothing about defending women’s rights.

  • Anonymous

Wow Republicans have had a really bad month.

This from the male chauvenist pig who made fun of Sarah and any conservative woman day in and day out?  You think anyone takes this sexist pig seriously when he is concerned about offending women?

Chris has lost it – he is in the gutter.

The aspirin joke it a very old line,  stop making like it some new scandalous thought.
The religious liberties thing is real.
Having contraception available is a very real issue too.  It stinks how politics corrupts everything.

More Media Matters-through-the-lips-of-MSNBC-hosts SMEAR on Republicans.

These people have no integrity or honesty whatsoever. It’s just a shame so many morons just blindly follow them…and then on ther side, we have the more evolved-thinking, NEW GOP!

  • http://www.proactivepolitics.blogspot.com/ Norbit Peters

    Just ignore these Smear-Traps, GOP.

THEIR media has been SMEARED itself with the Media Matters-White House scandal, and they now only hold sway over the freeloading Democrats that weren’t voting for you anyway!

  • Anonymous

In this thread right-wingers will attack Matthews until the Santorum campaign actually does walk back those remarks, then they will slither away like they always do.

  • http://www.proactivepolitics.blogspot.com/ Norbit Peters

Iran showcases a missile today capable of reaching the US, just a day after Obama announces he’s gutting America’s nuclear arsenal by 80%, down to 300.

    Coincidence?
Did Obama ever express what his beliefs were on the 72 virgins?

  • Anonymous

You’re right Norbit, Obama is selling weapons to the Iranians! How dare he, Reagan would never do something like that!

  • Anonymous

I agree, Republicans should stand by the claim that putting aspirin between your legs is a form of birth control.

  • Anonymous

Women like Chrissie Lewinski won’t vote for Santorum.

  • Anonymous

Porked, you, as always, misunderstand everything. The old boy was defending a womans right to keep her legs closed. He was saying some women actually can exercise this right, even though the demoncracks say women can’t control themselves and are like animals in that regard, without any ability to exercise any free will or good judgement. Sexist superiorist left wing sissy boy rat demoncracks.

  • Anonymous

True, no honesty at all, even though Chris Matthew’s claim can be easily confirmed on video.

  • Anonymous

    What are you saying?

Women should put a missile between their legs?

  • Anonymous

Tina, get the memo, the Republican Party has now declared war on women. You’re not going to be able to play the sexist card no matter how bad liberals bash conservative bimbos.

  • Mo Fokker

I doubt he will apologize since he needs his money, but I do know he will distant himself from the comment when asked about it.

  • Anonymous

Have you seen the other Matthews article – where he thinks it’s weird for a man to cook?  Matthews thinks a woman’s place is in the kitchen cooking for her man.  Please – the MCP here is clearly Matthews…he is simply projecting yet again.  Libbies like to do that.

  • Anonymous

    More than half. 50.4%. LOL

  • Anonymous

    Nice deflection.

  • Anonymous

    its a joke – relax

  • Anonymous

Chris Matthews isn’t running for president nor is he affiliated with anyone’s campaign. Believe it or not, Matthews was offering good & sincere advice. Telling people that putting aspirin between your legs is a form of birth control makes you look like a complete idiot, of course looking like an idiot is something Republicans strive for these days.

  • Anonymous

Hey satanic mouse, did you hear about the Congressional Budget Office report out today that says the real unemployement rate is 15%?  It’s on CBO.org, just in case you were interested hearing the truth.  I really don’t think you are, but, just in case.  Also, so you don’t fall further behind, the CBO works for Obama, not Fox News.

  • Anonymous

Very well said Jai108.  Well thought out and made a lot of common sense.  Sadly, pork rind won’t get it.  there’s a difference in ”misunderstanding” and being stupid.

  • Anonymous

Really? Because the unemployment rate that has always been reported says that it’s 8.3%. I guess now that the economy is recovering (even according to Mittens), Republicans have to resort to stats that have never been used to judge the economy before. What was the real unemployment when Bush was in office?

  • Anonymous

Republicans are acting very Muslim-like about women lately. I wonder at what point a group like this becomes a terrorist organization? I imagine the Taliban started out by doing things like this, slowly trying to take women’s rights away.. until it spiraled into people saying women belong in the home, then it turned into, women can only be out with family members.

The Tea Party is becoming the American Taliban party if you ask me… and I don’t care what some middle-aged fat white person says, they aren’t about liberty or freedom, they are about taking those things away.

  • Anonymous

Very original joke, didn’t see that one coming.

    3. Iran having a nuclear weapon.
    4. High Gas Prices.
    5. Socialist healthcare

    10. And finally he should apologize for supporting the sadistic murder of millions of babies.

BTW, the semi-cloistered nuns at my all girl school used to tell we girls, way waay back then and only half in jest, that “an aspirin gripped tightly between your knees is all the protection you will ever need”.

It is shorthand for the responsibility is first and foremost ours and the safest course for girls and young women is to reserve certain behavior until one is old enough to make good decisions.  There is no question that birth control is NOT 100% effective and its success among the immature is quite poor considering the lifelong financial and social consequences caused by school age girls having babies when they are hardly more than babies themselves.

What exactly do you think women did before birth control pills?  Do you think kids just walked in to the drugstore and bought condoms?  They didn’t – condoms were never out in public view and one of the sorority and fraternity rituals for new recruits was making them go into a drug store and ask for them, with all the other members peeking in the window and laughing hysterically because it was the ultimate embarrassment.

Thus – you kept your legs closed if you didn’t want to get pregnant.  Thus the aspirin joke.

Speaking of his experience, they always call him a community organizer as if (1) that’s terrible thing and (2) that’s all Obama ever did before becoming president. Besides his relatively short terms as state and U.S. senators, he taught constitutional law at one of the top five law schools for something like 14 years. I’ve seen people try to claim he wasn’t a real faculty member there but University of Chicago’s own website confirms that he was as high-ranking as a tenured prof. Then there’s the ridiculous insinuations that being a professor is somehow a bad thing or that he must have been a horrible law student because he (like most presidents and most presidential candidates) hasn’t released his transcripts.

You don’t invest billions in new energy when you’re broke!  You don’t drive a Range Rover when you can’t even afford a Trabaunt.

Obama turned down Keystone – proven, safe and wouldn’t cost the Government a cent.  We need the product, we need it desperately.

I watched a program recently on solar energy and the “solar expert” said it would not be a viable fuel source for at least 10-15 years.  You don’t build factories when you know that the product they are selling is obsolete before it even goes out the door.
Enrobe your house in solar panels and extend your pool heater by 1 month!  Meanwhile your beautiful tile roof now looks like crap.  You still can’t swim when you want to, and your house looks like shit.

Nuclear Energy – haven’t built a new plant since?  Why?  Because of the environmentalists.  They are basically holding the Country hostage.

Wind Energy – not in my backyard – and besides being a blight on the landscape, it again does not produce any type of energy that offsets the problems.

I know this is kind of subtle and nuanced, so please read it slowly:

If you are only outraged by the behavior of one political party (and not the other), or put another way, if you aren’t equally outraged by both sides, then you are a partisan hypocrite with an agenda and an axe to grind. Therefore, your motives are highly suspect.

There are plenty on both sides. It’s probably why independents are the ones who decide elections.

Pal, the White House has already agreed to exempt Catholic-run businesses, even though they were mostly already providing birth control and even though something like 13 states already mandated them to make birth control available. Of course, the White House’s decision won’t stop Catholic-run businesses from having to pay for insurance policies that provide birth control in those states, but you won’t see Fox report that because GOP state lawmakers voted for those regulations.

But I don’t understand why you Repubs keep pretending this is an issue. You got what you want. Plus, most Catholic women and men don’t care about it, according to all polls.

The argument about the state impinging on religious freedom is ridiculous, by the way, because the state already does that. We don’t, for example, allow the Church to stone people, though the Old Testament and Koran do. National laws override religious laws all of the time, whether you are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, etc.

The 15% figure he quotes includes those who have not looked for work in the last 4 weeks and those working part-time.

But, we will use your “reported” figures to analyze the data provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

BUSH: In the eight years he was in office the average unemployment rate was 5.5%. The lowest being in ’06 at 4.4% and the highest being in ’08 at 6.6%.

OBAMA: Since he has been in office for 3 full years now, we will use all three years, ’09 at 10.1% — ’10 at 9.7% — ’11 at 8.3% (actually, during 2011 it was steady above 9%, but I decided to be generous and give you the 8.3%) so the average for Obama in the three years he has been in office is 9.3%.

So, there is your comparison between Bush and Obama’s unemployment rates, you really shouldn’t open your mouth about things you know nothing about, little boy.

Hamster, it’s even funnier that they don’t realize what sheep they are. For example, his transcripts were never an issue until the week that he finally turned over his birth certificate and it became apparent that birtherism was a dead end for most. All of a sudden, radio talk show hosts and blogs begin to wonder about his grades. What is he hiding? Only an idiot would’ve run Harvard’s law journal, right? Hannity says so…

They completely ignore the fact that Bush’s grades were leaked, and McCain never turned his over, etc. Hannity only tells them the important things.

    By Alex M. Parker
February 16, 2012 RSS Feed Print
After three years with unemployment topping 8 percent, the U.S. has seen the longest period of high unemployment since the Great Depression, the Congressional Budget Office noted in a report issued today.[Dems Tout GOP Payroll Tax Plan as Political Victory.]And, despite some recent good news on the economic front, the CBO is still predicting that unemployment will remain above 8 percent until 2014. The report also notes that, including those who haven’t sought work in the past four weeks and those who are working part-time but seeking full-time employment, the unemployment rate would be 15 percent.Hey dumba_s, see that number at the bottom of the story?  That’s called proof of what I’m claiming.  Something you libs seem to have trouble producing.  Just keeping talking out of you r a_s.

Actually, I don’t believe in God. But if I did, the God in the bible did a lot of terrible things that he/she should be ashamed of.

I don’t think it’s a BIG difference. Both things are about who is in charge and control of a woman’s body. Her? Or the government?

My point is that you can’t give a woman the right to spread her legs – or not – and then take that right away by saying she has to give birth to a baby. (And I’m not even going to get into the rape and incest arguments.)

I’m personally not entirely comfortable with the whole concept of abortion – but I’m even more uncomfortable about me or anyone else saying that someone else has the final say over another woman’s body.

That, to us, was a no brainer.   Are you perhaps projecting your own family values, or lack thereof, onto me and my family?

No matter how you slice or dice it it is an indisputable fact that very young parents have a rough row to hoe for the rest of their lives.  With that in mind I believe that a loving responsible parent will do everything they can to keep their children from going down that path.

Why are you so disturbed by such an approach that you throw terms like “tramp” around.

I agree. We will have to agree to disagree.

  • sid_id

Bush inherited an umemployment rate of 4%, and left office eight years later with an unemployment rate of 6.6%. A difference of 2.6%. But if you use Bush’s average of 5.5% for the eight years, you will yield a figure of 1.5%.

In three years Obama’s average is 9.3% and using Bush’s highest number of 6.6%, you yield 2.7%. If you want to use Obama’s average of 9.3% and Bush’s average of 5.5%, your figure would be 3.8%. If you want to use Obama’s highest number so far of 10.1% and Bush’s highest number in eight years of 6.6%, you would get a figure of 3.5%.

Anyway you want to figure it, Obama’s is higher.
So, once again, you really shouldn’t open your mouth about things you know nothing about, little boy.

As of January 1, 2009 the unemployment rate was 7.8%, the highest level in more than 15 years, losing ~750,000 jobs a month.

Just wanted to say no forgiveness needed. We were mostly civil to each other in our lobbing back and forth. In fact, I’m probably a little more prickly in person, but I’ve made it a sort of personal mission to try my best to be relatively civil. Snarky, yes. Jerky? Guilty as charged. Sarcastic, absolutely. And probably a few other pejoratives. But at least I don’t swear. It’s a start.

OK, I’ll agree with that, it’s reasonable to believe that policies and decisions made by a previous administration will naturally flow into the next administration.

So when Obama took office he obviously addressed the economy quickly and head on. His solution was the stimulus package which he projected would never let unemployment rates rise above 8%. Turns out he was wrong when they discovered the actual recession was much worse than they originally predicted.

In the second quarter of 2009 when the stimulus package kicked in, we did see some substantial growth over the next four quarters, but as the impact of the stimulus package has begun to fade, growth has weakened and it hasn’t lifted the economy nowhere near what he projected. Many are now saying that the stimulus was not big enough and was not left in place long enough to put the economy anywhere near it’s potential output. Others argue that because the actual recession was worse than they thought, naturally it will take longer to recover and just be patient, the economy will turn around.

Regardless of which theory you subscribe to, the stimulus package that they initially enacted did not produce the results that the Obama administration projected it would and in the timeframe they calculated.

So now the Republicans pounce on this and proclaim this as “Obama’s failed economic policies” and now he is stuck in a position with a Republican congress who will not give him any more money and whose sole agenda seems to be to thwart his every move. My question is where does that leave us?

Hey Mencius, sorry for being a jackass to you. You don’t deserve that.

  • Anonymous

Apologize for what, Mathews?  For a comment made by a supporter who is old enough to remember when promiscuity was unacceptable behavior for women and decency was a desirable quality in a woman?
How long is the line to your wife’s room when you are at work?

  • Anonymous

Google ‘Portal Seven U6 unemployment rate’ (Bureau of Labor Statistics) for the REAL rate:  15.1%!
The category always used by the media and the government is U3, which does not include those who have given up looking for a job (over 3 million) and the millions who are underemployed.

  • Anonymous

It is even worse!  Google ‘Portal Seven U6 unemployment rate’ (Bureau of Labor Statistics).  It is actually 15.1% !!

  • Anonymous

Actually, the comment was made by a man who is old enough to remember when promiscuity in a woman was undesirable, and decency was not the bizzare, abnormal trait that liberals want to make it.
We have really hit rock bottom when anyone is offended by a comment in praise of decency and he is asked to apologize to the sluts who are offended.
Not just no, but HELL NO!

  • Anonymous

    That was a good one.

  • Anonymous

Yes, hopefully it’ll work this time.

  • Anonymous

Where do you get a 60% approval rating? You must be reading or hearing something way out of the mainstream media.

  • Anonymous

Yes, that was a good one.

  • Anonymous

No problem, and ditto for my reaction to your comments.

  • Anonymous

    You just insulted little boys.

  • Anonymous

You’re right, sex is “abnormal”, except for the fact every higher organism known to man does it.

  • Anonymous

Thanks for the update – just a matter of curiosity though: which number did the media and the government report in the past, you know, before the current presidency? And were you ever concerned about these differences in the past as well?

    Cheers

  • Anonymous

    Thanks for a balanced reply.

Let me just say this: what was particular upsetting to me is that President Obama, naively so, aimed for a bipartisan approach to solve the depression, only to be met by obstinacy and ridicule from the right – the poor economic climate would have been deflected much earlier and the Republicans actually would have points to score, appealing to moderates and conservatives alike. However they only seem to aim for the votes of their most radical clientele, who are obsessed with birth certificates and uni transcripts. The entire conversation on the right is utterly disingenuous.

Austerity and stimulus are not mutually exclusive and, in fact, President Obama adapted both approaches, but for some obscure reason ending tax cuts for rich people and slashing military spending is unpopular with the right.

For the coming election, I would like to see the debate about fairness and equal opportunity again at the center. And to warp such a discussion into a hyperbole of ‘class warfare’, effectively muting and shifting the arguments, displays the callous ingenuity of the advocates of the wealthy.

I do not know where that leaves us, I do hope that the Republicans come to their senses and do their job instead of pandering to the extremists in their party.

     OMG!!
You really don’t get it? (snicker)
Look…..a joke stops being funny when the punch-line has to be explained to an idiot.
    Just forget it…..LOL!!

Lord their dunces, without a sense of humor. LOL

  • AIiveStiIIKickin

Liberals have problems with jokes because without a sense of humor,  jokes stump them. Thats no joke…they are jokes.

    Modern-Day Libs are Humorless
Then you have liberal leaders who are duping all these people.
Liberal leaders make certain they live lives in the lap of luxury. They
make certain of that. And they are happy as they live their lives of
luxury and as they wield their power over people beneath them. I’m
talking about the rank and file, dumb, stupid, uninformed libs who are
governed totally by broken hearts. They’re forever miserable, they’re
forever unhappy, they blame the structure of the country for it. I mean
those are the people that are susceptible to the accusation that the
way they and the rest of us have lived is destroying the climate, for
    example.
But there is redemption possible. These are the people
desperately searching for meaning in their lives. Their lives don’t
mean anything. Everybody wants their life to have meaning, everybody
wants to matter, and so the brilliant liberal leaders say, “Well, fine,
you want to matter, then buy some stupid little car here that is gonna
save the planet, and, by the way, when a tax increase comes along,
happily pay it. This is the price you must pay for the damage that you
have wrought.” My gosh, these people are so overwhelmed with guilt, and
they want everybody to feel exactly as they do: miserable, unhappy,
cantankerous, you name it. And so that’s what their mission is.
    So
I don’t think, Snerdley, that America could ever be anything that they
would be proud of. Their existence is based on finding flaws. That’s
the essence of liberalism. You find a flaw, you point it out, and in
the process you say to yourself, “I’m compassionate. Well, look at me, I
care. Look what I’ve noticed. Look what I see. See that suffering?
That’s horrible. Wow, am I a good person.” No. You don’t have to
solve it. In fact, you make fun of the people who want to solve it and
you accuse them of racism, sexism, bigotry, and homophobia and all that
other stuff. No, no, no. It’s the most gutless choice one can make, to
be a liberal. It’s just easy. You don’t have to ever do anything.
    And,
beyond that, all you have to do is think of yourself as a victim of
some unseen, powerful force that subjugates you into this life of
misery. And that allows you to think you’re owed something, that you’re
entitled to something. I know these people. I know them like every
square inch of my glorious naked body. Not just the back of my hand. I
know more about what they think and how they think than they do. And
that’s why they hate me, because I point it out. I nail ‘em, and they
don’t like that. They don’t like confronting the truth about their own
    existence.

Die painfully okay? Prefearbly by getting crushed to death in a
garbage compactor, by getting your face cut to ribbons with a
pocketknife, your head cracked open with a baseball bat, your stomach
sliced open and your entrails spilled out, and your eyeballs ripped
    out of their sockets.

I really hope that you get curb-stomped. It’d be hilarious to see you
begging for help, and then someone stomps on the back of your head,
leaving you to die in horrible, agonizing pain.

STFU, before you get your face bashed in and cut
to ribbons, and your throat slit.

How does using birth control mean “promiscuity”?

Also, that Santorum supporter is old enough to remember a hypocritical, sexist era when promiscuity was just fine for men but unacceptable for women.

  • Tan

The CBO is NONPARTISAN, why are you a willful idiot? Everyone knows that. Of course they don’t work for Obama! They analyst everything that comes
to them from the FACTS. They report their projections based on FACTS. No agenda. In the past they have put out information both helpful and damaging to BOTH parties.

Sigh. Where did you get ‘educated’? I think you need to go back perhaps.

  • Tan

Yeah women who sleep with anyone are disgusting, but men that sleep with hundreds of women are fine? Coz it always the woman’s fault according to idiotic dinosaurs like yourself. Also; it doesn’t only pertain to promiscuous women at all (not that that is any of your business anyway) but obviously it only takes ONE incident to get pregnant.

What you and the evil man are saying is that women should be denied the right to have safe sex and just abstain, while men can go and have all the fun they like coz they aren’t responsible for consequences! Yuck, you’re a horrible woman hater. Go away.

You know, after my initial post, I investigated further and found that they are actually under the unbrella of the Congress.  They ARE supposed to be nonpartisan, and that waas actually my point.  I misspoke about it being under Obama’s authority, but the point is still relevant.  They are nonpartisan, and the numbers being reported are the real issue.

Also, you should be really careful about attacking someone’s intelligence and/or intellect over a misspoken piece of information.
