Mitt Romney Hits Back At Occupy Questioner, Andrea Mitchell Calls Exchange ‘Reagan-esque’

video

During a campaign stop in Charleston, South Carolina, a revved-up Mitt Romney got into a spirited tussle with an Occupy Wall Street-sympathetic questioner. “What will you do to support the 99%, seeing as how you are part of the 1%?” “Let me tell you something!” Romney exclaimed. “America is a great nation because we’re a united nation, and those who are trying to divide the nation, as you’re trying to do here, and as our president’s doing are hurting this country seriously.”

RELATED: Dana Perino: ‘Occupy Wall Street’ Should Love Our Country’s Economic System Or Leave It!

“The right course for America is not to divide America, and try and divide us between one and another, it’s to come together as a nation,” Romney continued. “And if you’ve got a better model, if you think China’s better or Russia’s better or Cuba’s better or North Korea’s better, I’m glad to hear more about it. America’s right and you’re wrong!”

MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell complimented Romney on his enthusiastic response.

“Well, that seemed to be Romney taking advantage of an opportunity,” Mitchell observed. “Because it seemed to be an Occupy or some other protester accusing him of being part of the 1%, which he certainly is, according to financial disclosures, but more broadly, he took that on and reframed it and showed an aggressiveness, it looked, with all due respect, almost Reagan-esque, going after a protester and making it his case.”

Why does the alternative always have to be North Korea or Cuba?  Why can’t it be Sweden or Finland?

Forget about these debates with other candidates, Romney should debate his former self.

  • Bobby Brady

Ask Michael Moore and Sean Penn.

  • Anonymous

More like Romney-esque, in that he didn’t actually answer the question, but simply gave his pre-programmed response.

  • Hout Bosques

    Nope; ‘fraid not.

First thing we’re going to find out is that this person Mittens is ranting at with stupid sophistry has never been to an Occupy event & does not self-identify as a Occupy participant. If that’s the case, it’ll show up on one of the various lefty shows on msnbc or on Current – bet on it.

Second thing we’re going to find is this rant showing up in a SuperPAC ad, in such a way that Mittens ends up looking a lot less “Reagan-esque” than Willard Mittens Rmoney Pate de Fois Gras avec Grey Poupon Thurston Howell III-esque. Might even get set to auto-harp; but it’s going into the SuperPAC sausage factory for sure. You can flat out guarantee this one.

Third thing – yeah, this could work fine with the GOP faithful (tho how it DISTINGUISHES him from the Ging-grick is hard to see), but … a general election campaign strategist would want to point out the obvious: that this puts a complete end to any ambitions & pretensions on the part of Mittens to speak as or for anyone in the 99% – which, last time I checked, includes working class people.

Fourth thing – you got all kinds of folks saying the Occupy participants are in no way oriented towards working for or supporting or even voting for Obama this year – & now here comes Mittens giving them a reason to do all of that – no, not just a reason: an incentive – Mitt is GOADING the Occupiers to go Obama. That’s real smart politics, right there.

He gave an excellent answer to a moronic question.  The question isn’t what a President can do to help out the OWS like Obama has been championing, its to help ALL of America.  For the past 3yrs only those with the ideology of the far left have been represented in the Federal Government.  Its time for that to change.

Rick Perry’s prayerful decision to withdraw marks another smack at Mitt Romney and the GOP establishment’s attempt to anoint Mitt as the de facto party nominee. Conservatives are slowly being forced to coalesce around a non-Romney alternative, and with Santorum having actually won Iowa, things may not be so smooth for Mitt.  Barring a total collapse, Romney will win South Carolina, Florida, and seal the nomination. But he’s making it far closer than it ought to be, and opens up questions as to GOP enthusiasm for him in a matchup against Obama.  www.sunstateactivist.org

That didn’t work too well for Palin. I don’t think it’s going to work any better for Romney, who ought to know better.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Actually, Chuck, Willard is unoriginal and slow on his feet. I didn’t pay much attention to him in 2008 when he threw the nomination to Gramps, but Mitt is not articulate. He doesn’t seem particularly bright at times. So, this has been a surprise to me. He deals only with simple sound bites, supplemented with quotes from the Pledge, the Declaration of Independence (which he seems to inevitably confuse with the Constitution) and patriotic songs. If he has to deviate, he gets flustered and starts stammering. As I said, this has been a big shock to me.

He doesn’t have the narcissistic personality of a politician (or a liberal). He’s an excellent businessman who also has public executive experience, but even without that he’d probably still run because his daddy did. Not knocking him for it, Moonbeam Brown did it in CA, and while extremely liberal he isn’t a moron – which makes him better than most politicians. Thinking of CA, I’d guess personality wise he’s a GOP equivalent of Gray Davis. Again, not fare to knock Romney or Davis for their personalities since it isn’t and shouldn’t be a requirement of the jobs they aspire’d to.

As Bill Maher very accurately said of Romney when summing up the GOP field, “at least he eats with a knife and fork.” His policy prescriptions for the country would be disastrous, but maybe — just maybe — he’d call on the pragmatism and reasonableness he used to have as Governor of Massachusetts.

One thing is for sure….it wasn’t Obama-esque.  He would’ve sided with the failure of human debris, blamed his pitiful self inflicted inadequacies on Capitalism and never would utter anything similar to America is the greatest country.

When he speaks he’s looking down at the podium implying that he’s looking at a written speech. A speech written on a piece of paper and a speech on a teleprompter there is little difference between the two. Your complaints are with Bill Clinton – he’s the one who signed legislation enabling this income disparity to flourish.

That’s why Obama kept the same Goldman-Sachs people that caused the whole housing debacle.
That’s why Goldman-Sachs and the other (5) big Wall Street banks gave record contributions to Obama.- and Obama gave them 1.2 TRILLION in free money!

It’s called CORRUPTION, and Obama’s been BOUGHT & PAID FOR BY THE 1%’ers!

Now, all you hypocrites out there, where’s your outrage against Obama?

Obama says he’s for the middle class, but Obama SAYS a lot of things…watch what he DOES!

  • Hout Bosques

    Surely not ALL religiosity, tho.

I can understand the weaseliness involved in calling the Church of JC of LDS a cult yet somehow thinking the Holy Mother Church of Catholicism is any LESS of a cult – or if you want to go really extreme, those literatlist nutbars among the xian fundys & in Islam – but what’s possibly “bigoted” about calling them ALL nuts, ALL of them cults? I can understand & even accept the need to hedge towards some unstructured deism, even if I don’t buy into it – but organizing tribalist bigotry around fairy tales for gullible children & the weak-minded & the irrationally, fearful, that goes way too far.

It’s easy to buy into the “tears hunks of raw meat off the bone with his teeth” image of so many conservatives. That profile does exist. But, most are really good, decent people with different points of view. Chuck is about as conservative as they come, but he is articulate, polite and not snarky. He often gives me pause.

He claims for unity when it comes to income inequality, but the GOP and Romney have been less reticent to pull a whole assortment of wedge issues to divide the electorate already this campaign–gay rights, abortion, food stamps, race, women’s reproductive rights, religion, and the list goes on.  He only calls for “unity” on this issue because he doesn’t want to answer the question.

If Reagan was such a great president, why did the right have to go out of their way to try to deify him with crap like the Regan Legacy Project and this obsessive fixation on comparing everything to him?
People didn’t do that for Lincoln or Roosevelt. They didn’t need it. Their greatness poke for itself.
But the right has been hoping that if they repeat the Norquist funded propaganda enough, they force Reagan into greatness, and people will forget about Iran-Contra, ballooning deficits, ignoring the AIDS crisis, nonsensical Star Wars waste, the erosion of the middle class, corporate deregulation, and all the other boneheaded bungling Saint Ronnie brought to U.S. government.

Like the way Adam Carolla put this whole class divide/hate the rich bs the other day:

”If 10 people all go out to dinner together and the bill came and it was $500 and we decided to split it up 10 ways, then your share is $50. Unless you had 26 Heineken’s that I don’t know about, your fair share with the other 9 strangers your sitting with, considering you’ve all ordered the same thing off of the same menu is $50! I paid the equivalent of $450 in taxes last year! And I’ve got the 2 guys who paid nothing pointing at me and telling me to pay my fair share?! You’ve got to be kidding me,” Carolla exclaimed.

You are exactly right. That’s also why Ron Paul has enjoyed so much support this go around with  his flirt with the nomination as well. Romeny will seal the nomination and there will be a few months of adulation within the Republican party, but will they still be there when it’s time to vote. As much as some of the extreme right hates Obama, that can really be their only selling point for Romney.

  • Anonymous

Currently, top 1% pay 40% of the bill, top 10% pay 70% of the bill, almost 50% pay nothing… and the bottom 50% are complaining about the others not paying their fair  share?

Obama is pandering to those not paying (there’s a lot of them) for their votes, ignoring the above.  This is the leader who is going to take the country back to economic prosperity after failing the first term?

  • david r

Once the aging boomers die off, you won’t have anyone to tax.  Looks like you’ll have to get off your duff and work.  Reagan wasn’t perfect, but the day he was sworn in, the Iranians released hostages they’d held for over a year.  And we enjoyed prosperity.  Had Clinton been a good man, I’d remember him just as fondly.  His little tryst with that hosebag Lewinsky cost him his legacy.

Hmmm.. food for thought. Lets see, in China a very wealthy elite class interacts with and controls government and big busines. In Russia, same thing. How about in Korea or Cuba.. wow, its the same. Very very wealthy people in these countries also are involved in the activities of the Government at the highest and lowest levels.. Hmmm.. I think I would like America to try hard to STOP looking like these other countries and move to do something American and original.. We are already at the CUBA/CHINA/RUSSIA levels so much so that our elections arent even run correctly anymore (see Iowa 2012 for most recent “vote count” moment.)

YUP, Reagan and Clinton (minus the loose pants) were outstanding. Like the guy who takes the gang out on a stolen credit card. Its A HELL OF A PARTY till the card is tapped out. BUT just like Clinton and Reagan, the guy can leave the stolen card with the gang and GO AWAY..then suddenly the GANG realizes..WHO IS GOING TO PAY THIS BILL!!!! WE need to stop rewriting history for these men. When they were in office things were done that led to where we are today. Why do Americans believe so readily that the TERM of a president is the only time the AFFECTS the country? It is CHILDISH and short sighted.

  • david r

You are clueless.  Iran-Contra happened 8 yrs later.  By that time Reagan was so beloved, the media and everyone else forgave him for it.  It wasn’t right, but that is the way it played out.

Its relative. Clinton was one of the KEY presidents responsible for removing regulations that were put in place to get us through and over the original GREAT DEPRESSION. Just because HE left office with his credit card full of fake cash does not mean he was any better or worse than anyone who followed. I’m being honest. I LIKED Clinton, but he did some things to the country that hurt us within a decade of his final term. Bush? I cant even begin to discuss what he did in office, but I can not BLAME him alone.. I blame the few hundred thousand voting Americans and every American who keeps considering “GOVERNMENT” to be this external entity. WE VOTE to place people in OUR government so ANYTHING IT DOES is OUR FAULT.. and WE are the only ones that can change it.

Yeah a perfectly suitable, dumbed down analogy which doesn´t make any sense.

Claiming that the economic system of one country is the same as going to a dinner is flat out stupid.

If anything, it´s more like one out of the ten when the check arrived paid less as anyone else percentagewise because he is a member of the vip club.

I mean how stupid must one be to fall for the ludicrous claim one person is paying 90% of the state budget. Cause the check is supposed to be the overall tax revenue.

My god, is that analogy wrong and people fall for it….

OH NO,I certainly don’t want the !%’ers to go away.I would rather roll their tax rate back to the pre-Reagan rates so it would deter them from draining company assets to fatten their wallets, and entice them to reinvest that money back into the company. As it is,they have no incentive to keep the companies in the USA,since they would rather continuing to fatten their wallets with
absurdly low tax rates and cheap foreign labor, and before I hear about the tired straw man from the right about union labor, let me inform you that labor unions make up less than 25% of the workforce.Sounds to me that you would rather have the unions, poor, and the middle class just go away,so the corporate vultures you evidently support can continue to drive these individuals out of existence.Well,I got a news flash for you Skippy, corporate vultures like Romney could never assimilate with the middle class his ilk is desperately trying to eliminate.Corporate America has over reached with their ALEC agenda and I appreciate it,since Romneys of this country have awakened a sleeping giant.Good luck with that Romney thing, let me know how that works out this Nov.

You do realize you live in America.  You’ve heard of free enterprise?  You’ve heard of capitalism and how it’s made America what it is?

Have you heard of Greece?  How about the Soviet Union.  How are those working out>

Romney earned it.  Jealousy is not an admirable trait.

Why do you want to confuse these tiny little brained green eyed monsters that they too could make something of themselves instead of coveting what someone else has.
(someone – is anyone who is better off than they are).

I don’t know what happens to the human mind.  Why do some people look at a successful person and think – “look what’s possible in this great Country”, and the other person see the same successful person and say – “how dare he/she, I deserve it as much as he does, and he damn well better share it with me”.

What the hell happens to people that they think everyone should be equal?  How many of us have gone into a store and can pretty much tell which employee will do well just by the way they do their job.  Their demeanor, their attitude, their whole persona.  We can also spot the ones who will amount to nada.  We’ve worked with them, covered for them, tried to light a fire under them, to no avail.  There all in here screaming “how dare someone be successful”!

we are talking about Federal tax foo.  State and local taxes are paid by everyone depending on what they buy, own, etc.

Factually the tax burden for superrich as gone down?  You’re nuts.

If I buy a Range Rover (because I can afford to) and you buy a Volt. What do I pay and what do you pay?  I pay a hell of a lot more to state and local than you do, after I pay the dealership.

Of course the super rich would pay a hell of a lot more with state and local taxes on their purchases and life style.

  • Anonymous

you didn’t really say that.  Perhaps you want a rewrite?

For Antonio.  The Glass-Steagall was put in place to prevent that from happening.  You are talking about the Gramm-Bliley Act that deregulated Glass Steagall so investment banks could go into cahoots with other banks.  That would not have happened if Glass Steagall had been kept intact.  We would not be in this mess.  So you can thank Gramm and Bliley for deregulation.

    Glass-Steagall Act.
An act passed by Congress in 1933 that prohibited commercial banks from collaborating with full-service brokerage firms or participating in investment banking activities.

So what do you want, a bigger welfare state?  We can’t afford the one we have now.

You want the Government (broke) to give you more (from what they don’t have), or do you want jobs created by the private sector, that will provide jobs for the unemployed which will allow them to keep their homes/buy homes and buy cars, other things which improves economy and the government makes more money?

Oh please. If you can’t provide a response that does nothing more than insult and name call, keep your poorly constructed opinion to yourself, laaawyur Dave.

Romney’s “people”, the corporations, are not being very good citizens.  They are sitting on hordes of money after sending jobs to low-wage, low regulation countries.  They should pay higher taxes so that the government can keep its promises to the people.

  • Anonymous

Holy moly, do you actually believe in this nonsense?

You need a list of super successful millionaires and billionaires who oppose your political views?

What a completely unamerican and anti-constitutional view to question the idea that everyone should be equal. That´s the very idea of freedom . Being equal doesn´t mean that everyone earns the same income. That´s just the worst conservative bs.

Your views have nothing to do with the reality in this country.

The overwhelming majority doesn´t mind people doing well. They mind that  a fundamental transfer of economic wealth has happened. In 2010 the median household adjusted for inflation income was 7 percent lower than in 1999. Do you get that? Hardworking Americans of all political orientation have less money compared to the past.

All economic indicators show a dramatic widening gap between the top 1% and the 99%. The income inequality here is worse than in Russia, not to mention central Europe, and on the level of countries like China and Argentina. Not many countries in the world have a worse Gini-index than we do.

If you prefer politics  of the 1%, by the 1% &  for the 1%, that´s fine.  Be honest about it. say fu** 99% of Americans and don´t give us these shallow ideological lectures about a free market which in reality doesn´t exist.

The American Dream is just a platitude these days. The fact is socio-economic mobility happens in countries like Canada, Finland, Norway and Denmark.  Not here.

A guy like Romney will make sure it stays that way.

  • Anonymous

I find it particularly amusing that you as someone who shows of as a money guy don´t have a clue about the difference between total amounts, percentages and effective tax rates. Amounts are irrelevant. Relevant are percentages and effective tax rates. Effectively, rich people have never paid less taxes in this country

  • Anonymous

Well at least you are admitting that the quoted analogy was bs.

And again, you don´t understand that the top 10% are paying 70% of federal income taxes, but that´s not 100% what goes into the pot. It says nothing about the effective tax rate of the top taxpayers.

I liked Romney’s answer, but then again – I like Romney.

Well… best way to help -all- of America is to start off figuring how to help 99% of America.  Once that’s done, take a quick check, “will the 1% still be okay?”

  • Anonymous

Good luck with that… if Romney (“Corporations are People, my friends”) is the best you can do then prepare yourself for another 4 years of Barack in the Whitehouse.

Romney and his 1% are the only ones dividing this nation.  They are living proof that the GOP is not a political party that is of, by or for the people.  The GOP loves entitlement programs for the wealthy and go out of their way to stump for corporate welfare.  However the moment it becomes time to fix the problems made by republicans….they scream “class warfare”.  The only ones with the entitlement attitude in this nation are republicans.

  • Anonymous

50% of the nation at or below the poverty level, tens of millions without healhcare, rise in food pantry use up by 60% in one year, foreclosures still RISING, wages BELOW 1979 levels and declining, education levels 34th in the world, dunces like Bush “elected”, oh yea, “free enterprise” is working out real well…Listen closely to the auto-gibberish language of Romney, attacked as a “Vulture Capitalist” by fellow “free enterprise-er’s,greeder’s, literal nonsense…Greece is in debt to the very Wall St globalized parasites like Romney/Bain that leverage “debt” pick at the carcasses..People in the streets there, Spain, England, general strikes, keep a close eye, it’s migrating here. Romney et al will accelerate the process, that’s all, not avoid it.

  • Anonymous

Time to rise, surface from below the rabbit hole, look around at the cratering nation. All the wealth the 1% have primitively accumulated, often illegally because of laws allowing, promoting vulture capitalism, has been created by the workers, not fictional finance capital,Wall St., the material things, widgits, become “profits” appropriated from that wealth, distributed by the Boards of Hoarders amongst themselves and “shareholders” The Fix is in, as we will all see when Romney’s disgusting Vulture Capitalist DNA is illuminated. So, read a little Adam Smith, the “mysteries” of the “hidden hand”, what is nonsense “economics” taught in our school system, you may discover elements of why you “don’t know what happens to the human mind”.It’s not envy, seek, it’s fury at being ripped off by the parasites,1%! Just where your overlords want you, as they always have, sucker.

I would love to see all the one percenters withhold paying ANY tax for a year to let all the ignorant 40 some percent who pay no federal income tax see how well they fare when their gravy train derails.

The hearings took place 8 years later. The actual scandal started 4.5 years into Reagan’s Administration.

It was related to the hostage crisis in that allegedly the same back-channel contacts were used. The Reagan Administration still denies everything. Due to many prosecuted cover-ups and the death of key members of the scheme – like Bill Casey, we will probably never know exactly what happened.
