Mitt Romney’s Secret Service Detail Clobbers Potential Glitterbomber

Secret Service pounced upon an audience member allegedly wielding glitter following Mitt Romney’s speech in Denver, Colorado, Tuesday night. CNN reports the man hurled a blue substance, reportedly glitter, at the former Massachusetts governor.

CNN confirmed the incident via Twitter:

CNN reporter Steve Brusk tweets that the man who attempted the glitter bomb on Romney is being held in a side room.

Glitter makes everything better. Mitt’s had just lost and this guy was trying to cheer him up.
He was trying to make him look FABULOUS!

  • Anonymous

I guess Mitt is fabulous enough!

  • DoNotMindMe

Glitter-bombing is a prime example of what is wrong with today’s political discourse…

Why is militant activism considered OK as long as the means justify the ends? There are much better ways to protest and present your opinion that doesn’t make you look as lame as glitter-bombing does.

It didn’t appear to be glitter to me – blue it was.

After tonight I think Romney needs a little glitter. It must suck to know your going to be the nominee but cant constantly win in the primaries.

  • Anonymous

I hope that he gets five years in prison, if you can go to prison for 8 years because you shipped lobsters in the wrong box….  well then this little OWS weenie deserves at least 5 years for his glitter attempt..

“Abner Schoenwetter was importing seafood to sell to U.S. restaurants for over 12 years from Honduras.  Those shipments were overseen by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) who inspected the shipments and found everything in order, including the plastic bags used to ship the frozen Caribbean lobsters (see the U.S. Department of Justice Charges here).  That plastic, and not a box, is a “no-no” according to the Lacey Act which was enforced by another U.S. government entity, National Marine Fishery Service.  Schoenwetter was prosecuted and was sentenced to 8 years in federal prison, which he completed in August of 2010 (he’s still on probation). ”

This was a case similar to the Gibson Guitar case, funny that dems think that the Tea Party is being hysterical about the government over nothing.

I agree. It is appalling. I don’t support this glitter-bombing crap. How does that bring more people to your cause? If you think about it, it is a form of bullying. Could also be regarded as battery.

  • Anonymous

I agree tossing glitter at someone is stupid, but to attempt to equate it with battery is just plain moronic. It’s just glitter, you wipe it off and move on.

I thought you people valued common sense…

It was clearly blue acid and the man was attempting to disfigure the beautiful Romney.

He was not expected to win in MO and MN (Rs are very social con there); he barely lost CO, and with the proportional allocation, he didn’t lose much last night.

  • Anonymous

One of these days, some crazy leftist pretending to be a glitter bomber, is going to throw something a little more dangerous at one of these candidates.  SS did a good job.  Charge him with felony assault.

  • chalket

Yes, Jack, we have some stupid laws in this country plus over-zealous enforcement and excessive punishment. As sad as li’l Abner’s case is, it has no bearing here, but thanks for sharing.

I personally can’t understand why some numbnuts would think throwing anything is an acceptable or effective form of political speech. Legally it is assault and battery (but unless you can prove “intent to harm” there is little chance of prosecution).

What is really scary though is asshats who can somehow think throwing glitter should warrant a prison term, much less “at least 5 years”. You have seriously warped priorities my friend.

  • chalket

Assault? Yes. Felony? Nope, falls way short. Sorry.

  • http://twitter.com/Lockestep1776 N Locke Step

These idiots are going to get themselves killed. The Secret Service can not assume that someone throwing something at a candidate is not throwing something harmful. It is a belligerent act performed to harass and as someone else stated bully a candidate. If an agent had to use deadly force in order to prevent an attack then it will be the person throwing the glitters fault. The more this happens the more security will be tightened and the more likely one of these glitter throwing losers is going to get hurt. Arrest them all and prosecute to the extent of the law. That could mean a lot of things (5 years in jail is too extreme for my tastes), but misdemenor battery seems reasonable.

More likely that a crazy right-winger will try to shoot Obama.

  • sid_id

Colorado does not have a specific definition related to battery, they refer it to an assault charge and this offense does not meet any of the elements needed to prosecute under 1st, 2nd or 3rd degree assault. This offense would more likely be prosecuted under the disorderly conduct statute.

  • sid_id

    Assault – No,
    Felony – No,
    Disorderly Conduct – Yes.

Yeah.  Maybe the glitter would have been a protective shield

You do know he actually won two of these states in his previous run?
And he lost CO by six percentage points.  But how could he lose EVERY
    county in MO?

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

This kind of stuff is SO uncalled for. SS and Candidates have to worry about real threats, and the SS put their lives on the line every day, protecting their clients.

Every episode like this, when someone throws or lunges at a candidate, is a potential life threatening situation and it is just not cool. I don’t approve of this type of thing, no matter who the candidate is. It is scary for the SS, the candidates and their families.

Throw their ass in jail. Maybe that will put an end to these types of attacks.

Do this to Obama and you get twenty years in prison.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

That is the key to understanding this. The meme continues. At the very core, people do not like Willard. That general, inchoate dislike transcends even the flip-flops. It has nothing to do with envy. It’s not particularly ideological. The man is just not appealing. He is off-putting. He is uncomfortable with himself, and he makes people uncomfortable with him. Humanizing doesn’t seem to work for him. Sanitarium did a great job with his grandfather’s hands story. People can relate to that. Willard botched the aluminum paint on his father’s honeymoon story. At no point was the story about his father’s drive and determination. It was passive. America made him do it. The man is an emotional mess.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

The Gibson case was enforcing a W-era thing (nothing to do with Obama).  They have (basically) admitted to wrongdoing, merely saying they employ people (so does the mafia).  I am guessing you watch those Exxon commercials with the nice lady saying oil companies = jobs and regulations = govt = bad.  Whenever a CEO says merely they create jobs, that is a tacit admission of wrongdoing.  They bought endangered/illegal wood from abroad, they knew it.  Got caught and should be punished.

Reform, yes.  Bring on the lobster.  But even mentioning this in a glitter bomb story shows you are unpatriotic, wanting to tear down law in the country to the Gangs of NY era of “if you feel like it, do it”.  Of course your screenname lends me to believe you are about as serious as a Adam Sandler movie.

  • Anonymous

I look at this behavior as mostly harmless but the problem is that once someone has Secret Service protection, they’re taking their lives into their hands with this sort of ‘protest’.  NO way to know what someone is tossing, and the fact that the guy didn’t eat the floor was a testament to some Secret Service restraint.

Keep this up, someone is going to get hurt, and then they’ll blame the candidate(s).

  • Anonymous

Well, that’s odd. because the only “adults” that ever seem to disagree with us are high-school drop-outs that have given over their lives to religion as some form of “guidance”, and indemnification from all of their stupidity.  They can usually be found near the entrance of a local WalMart wearing a little blue vest and asking us if we would like a cart. They have (basically) admitted to wrongdoing, merely saying they employ
    people (so does the mafia).

No, they haven’t admitted to wrongdoing, and the case has nothing to do with who they employ. They strongly insist that they’ve done absolutely nothing wrong, and the government has yet to actually charge them with and wrongdoing.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/henry-juszkiewicz/gibson-guitars-lacey-act_b_1071770.html

Also, the Lacey Act, which the Obama Administration is using as cover for their assaults on Gibson, is over 100 years old and has nothing to do with Bush.

Are you just misinformed, Brandon, or is there something else going on here?

  • Pablo

    Doesn’t the SS have tasers?

  • Pablo

Good thing we don’t have a real President.

  • Pablo

  • chalket

Actually, “glitter bombing” technically is Assault and Battery in most jurisdictions. It is no different from throwing pies, eggs, paint, or anything else at someone without permission. As I said (somewhere) above, unless you can prove “intent-to-harm”, there is little chance of prosecution. It hasn’t really been tested in the courts (no prosecutor has been stupid enough to try it) but I seriously doubt that glitter bombing would be considered “protected speech” under the First Amendment, as it certainly infringes on the rights of others.

  • Anonymous

Only a true ‘nut’ would ever do this, so I’m glad Romney has secret service protection now.   I hope Santorum and Newt get the same protection.  All these losers trying to get their ‘youtube’ moment, and the media glorifies it.

Hey, as if you could not read the sarcasm into what I wrote, this same little glitter throwing punk supports the government that has written thousands of laws which strip us of our freedoms and as this case points out will imprison you without application of common sense.  The Gibson guitar case is one, this case is another example, the article points out that if you pick up an arrowhead on federal land you could find yourself spending 2 years in prison…   by those standards, I would think that a five year term for throwing glitter on a presidential candidate would be fitting.

  • chalket

So you’re all upset about an obscure Naval office changing their logo from “Opus Dei Cum…” (God’s work with…) to “Miraculae Cum…” (Miracles with…) in a country where the Constitution guarantees freedom of and from religion? If you consider that to be “war on religion” then we’ll have to start the discussion of religion’s war on the rest of us. Trust me, you don’t want to go there.

  • 12voltman1

There is nothing scarier then a homosexual tossing shinny little pieces of sparking giltter in the air in your direction!. It must be totally horrible experience! I mean, you might even have to wipe your shirt off two or three times to get the giltter off!

  • chalket

Sarcasm is a notoriously difficult thing to pull off in a blog or forum post, especially if you are trying to claim that comments like “this little OWS weenie deserves at least 5 years” could, in any way, possibly be construed as sarcasm by any thinking person. FAIL.

  • Anonymous

Why does everything have to boil down to W vs Obama with you guys?  Why don’t we have a little discussion about what is right, and what is wrong….  Yes the Federal Government is out of control…  and they are becoming more controlling in most all things…  We used to call ourselves the land of the Free.. not so fitting anymore, I was down in Venezuela a few years back and someone laughed and said you Americans you think you are so free…. as they went on to draw parallels between how freely they are to live their lives and how controlled our society is…  I have never seen our country the same since.

The Gibson guitar did not bring illegal wood from abroad and the Indian government had no issues with the exports of that wood, the government has yet to prove that case and the Indian government seems to have no problem, remember the Lacey Act under which Gibson is being charged is designed to protect the laws of other countries from the exploitation of American business interests…  If the Indian government says that none of their laws have been violated then how is it that our government can make a straight faced claim that Gibson has violated Indian Law?  This is just big brother pushing American citizens around.  The government has seized millions of dollars of inventory and will not charge nor return the seized goods… The whole situation stinks to the high heavens.

  • WiddleBabyDanielson

Not to mention the last time it happend, Romney looked FABOULOUSSS.

  • WiddleBabyDanielson

Hopefully as well ad notsofast, stonepark, etc…

  • chalket

True, the Lacey Act was enacted over 100 years ago to combat illegal animal trading, however it was EXPANDED IN MAY 2008 to add the illegal harvesting of timber (there’s your Bush connection, are you just misinformed?). I don’t necessarily agree with Gibson’s treatment in this particular case, but lets at least keep our facts straight. (And you’re right, Gibson has not admitted any wrongdoing.)

  • sid_id

According to their website, Colorado statutes does not even have a definition for battery, it refers you to assault.

Colorado statue § 18-3-204. Assault in the 3rd Degree:(1) A person commits the crime of assault in the third degree if: (a) The person knowingly or recklessly causes bodily injury to another person or with criminal negligence the person causes bodily injury to another person by means of a deadly weapon; or (b) The person, with intent to infect, injure, harm, harass, annoy, threaten, or alarm another person whom the actor knows or reasonably should know to be a peace officer, a firefighter, an emergency medical care provider, or an emergency medical technician, causes such other person to come into contact with blood, seminal fluid, urine, feces, saliva, mucus, vomit, or any toxic, caustic, or hazardous material by any means, including but not limited to throwing, tossing, or expelling such fluid or material.

None of these definitions qualify for this offense, however I think a case could be made with one of these three statutes.
Colorado statute § 18-9-106. Disorderly conduct:
    (1) A person commits disorderly conduct if he or she intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly: (a) Makes a coarse and obviously offensive utterance, gesture, or display in a public place and the utterance, gesture, or display tends to incite an immediate breach of the peace.
Colorado statute: § 18-3-206. Menacing.(1) A person commits the crime of menacing if, by any threat or physical action, he or she knowingly places or attempts to place another person in fear of imminent serious bodily injury. Menacing is a class 3 misdemeanor.
Colorado statute: § 18-3-208. Reckless endangerment.  A person who recklessly engages in conduct which creates a substantial risk of serious bodily injury to another person commits reckless endangerment, which is a class 3 misdemeanor.

I do agree that it is not free speech. Anyway, here is the link to their statutes if you care to take a peek.

    http://www.state.co.us/gov_dir/leg_dir/olls/colorado_revised_statutes.htm

  • chalket

My apologies, I didn’t go so far as to look into specific state statutes, I was sticking with the overarching legal definitions as indicated by my “…in most jurisdictions.” It seems there is a wide variety of interpretations across the country, thank you for the additional insight.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/TNVN57C63UTYV3CYS5LU5YWPP4 Chris

…..I challenge you to find any report of a harmful political hate crime perpetrated by a liberal/progressive:….

Lee Harvey Oswald was a pro-Castro, pro-Communist leftist. Does that qualify as a harmful political hate crime?
Sara Jane Moore, who attempted the assassination of Gerald Ford, was an admitted leftist who now claims to have been “blinded by her radical political views.”
Bill Ayers – Obama’s mentor, was an anti-capitalist leftist leader of a domestic terrorist group responsible for many bombings and several deaths. Does that qualify?
Daniel Andreas – an animal rights activist / terrorist, is currently on the FBI’s most wanted list for bombing bio-tech facilities. Does that qualify? In the United States the pro-Union movement is clearly a leftist movement. Do you really want me to post every pro-Union thug who beat someone up or murdered in the name of their ideology?
How many arson, rapes, deaths, assaults, suicide and anti-semitism was there at Tea Party Events? Now how large is the list of those things at OWS? The fact that local police must be in full riot gear to disburse the OWS squatters speaks loudly enough. http://commoncts.blogspot.com/2011/11/occupy-wall-street-document-record-of.html

I could go on but I think the point is clear the LEFT owns political violence.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

that is just one of the many, many examples, and I used it because it came up today.

  • chalket

Lee Harvey Oswald: There is still considerable debate as to whether he actually shot anyone or was simply a well-placed patsy. Besides, that is waaaay before the 20-year time-frame of this mental exercise.

Sara Jane Moore: Again, way before our operative time-frame but I still find it interesting that she was an FBI informant at the time of the shooting.

Bill Ayers: Same complaint, any damage he personally caused (no injuries, by the way, just property damage) was back in the ’70′s.

Daniel Andreas San Diego: You might have me on that one, his animal rights activism could be stretched into this discussion of politics though his bombs targeted corporations not politicians or a political organization and he didn’t actually injure anyone.

And yes, if you have documentation of a “pro-Union thug” assaulting someone in the last 20 years, feel free to post it.

As for Tea Party vs OWS, you have to take some things into account. The TP events lasted several hours then folks went home. Occupy spent 4 months living in a space, sharing it with the homeless and mentally-ill who were already there, so of course there is a greatly increased opportunity for man’s violent nature to come out. Add in the fact that the Tea Party was co-opted by the Republican machine and therefore was the darling of the corporate media, it is no wonder that the police state reaction to the Occupy movement was much more hostile and aggressive as was the media coverage.

Lastly, you seem to have a very selective memory regarding right-wing violence:

    http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/03/alaska_militia_members_also_plotted_to_kill_an_irs.php
and let’s not forget the Gabby Giffords tragedy

No one knows what they are throwing until after the fact. Sodium cyanide look like white soap flakes for example. If there were a successful assassination attempt, guards would have orders to shoot first and get the facts later. Does anybody want that?
