Rep. Eric Cantor Walks Back ‘Mob’ Comments On Occupy Wall Street Protests

video

On Fox News Sunday today, Congressman Eric Cantor clarified remarks he made last week about the Occupy Wall Street protests and expressed personal concerns with some of his colleagues who have been publicly allying themselves with the movement in going after big business and the financial sector.

Chris Wallace played a clip of Cantor saying he was “worried” about the Occupy Wall Street “mobs” that have been spreading throughout the U.S., and asked the congressman if he stuck by those comments. Cantor did not directly address his comments, nor did he apologize for them, but acknowledged there is a lot of frustration among the electorate over the stagnating economy.

Where I’m most concerned is we have elected officials in this town who are, frankly, joining in an effort to blame others rather than focusing on the policies that have brought about the current situation. I mean, when you hear some of the Democratic elected leaders joining in blaming parts of our economy and society versus let’s take some of the credit or blame here in Washington.

A liberal NY mag did a poll of OWS’ers.  Of those polled 30% thin the USA is worse than Al Qaeda.  I’d love to know which of our resident libs is in that category.

  • Michelle

It’s not like Eric called them Brown Shirts like Pelosi did to the TP’ers.

  • Anonymous

Fact: Okay really what’s Cantor suppose to do on the subject call the mob all epic failures! He did point out that they are really lost and misguided!

  • Anonymous

lol…..never have I seen michelle so bent out of shape like she is over OWS, spamming all over mediaite.

It sure has her magic underwear in a bunch!!!

  • Michelle

Eric is spot on.  Barry and Nance have gone all in with their support.  These thugs clearly want violence.  They are trying to provoke the police into making the first move to justify it.  With the POTUS fully supporting them, I hope he’s ready for the consequences.

ps, I wonder how many of the OWS’ers know Barry is the biggest recipient of Wall Street cash in the last 20 years?

  • D L

Smart move, Mr. Cantor. I don’t agree with what the Occupiers are saying, anymore than you do, but what they are doing is exercising their First Amendment Rights and showing political dissent (somewhat), which are two of the most American things you can do, aside from waving the flag around, of course.

If nothing else you’re always “on message” with each comment. There’s a reason that Cantor is backing off from his comment. The Repubs are looking to scoop up some support from the protestors. Not likely!

Have you been down there Mich? Mostly non-thug types who are sick and tired of Wall Street’s stranglehold on the Government. Don’t believe the FOX rhetoric.

The Head Organizer of the failed , scandal ridden Obama administration ( campaign) has been set straight by John Boehner and Eric Cantor . He needs to quit the lying demagoguery and get back to Campaign Headquarters ( the White House) and consult with his lawyers . He is in up to his ears in the Solyndra Scandal and now it looks like the SunPower Scam is even worse (1.2 billion for 15 permanent jobs and lots of payoffs to his cronies ) .

  • Michelle

You say they are tired of WS’s stranglehold on gov’t, but unions are a big sponsor of this protest and they have one of the biggest strangleholds.  Thoughts?

Well Michelle, 30% of them may be thin but a much higher percentage of Cantor’s supporters are fat white people.

I’ve been listening to them off and on via direct feed.  If I could understand what they basically think they will accomplish I’d love to know.

Like any other “movement” – the goofs take over and say outlandish things and then people (like me) just tune it out.  I listened to one guy being interviewed this morning and he said it best, that everyone has a different agenda for why they are there.  I take that to mean it’s basically a “bitch fest”.

None of us are happy with what’s happening around us – we all think the other guy is to blame.  Human nature – why would we point the finger at ourselves?

There are good guys and bad guys in every sector of the “problem” – thus the “problem”.  Your good guy might be my bad guy and visa versa.

I don’t know what you think Fox is saying about this – but I’ve heard both negative and positive from pundits on there.  Both sides well represented.

Perhaps if the false picture of what Fox does and doesn’t do was thrown away, and recognized for what it is – another source of information, nothing more, nothing less – perhaps that might be a good start on the road to communicating like adults.

The anti-union platform of the tea-party puts them right in line with Hitler’s brown shirts who shut down the unions and imprisoned the union leaders in 1933 Germany.  So as you may see, it’s an apropos comparison.

Hey, BFD, how many days has it been since Henny Glenny said we’d see uprisings sweeping across the world?

Take off the hyperpartisan good/evil goggles for a minute! You’re unbearable – and you’re not helping! The OWS protesters have no clear party affiliation and decrying corporate money in politics should be an issue both a liberals and conservatives can agree on. OWS is not about Obama, it’s about a currupt and bought political system – and Obama is just as guilty of it as is pretty much anybody in Congress.

As much as you’d like to make this a black/white issue, Michelle – it’s not. And being a partisan hack incapable of seeing nuances you’re clearly struggling with that.

Rather than egging on violent mobs , Obama needs to be back at Campaign HQ figuring out who he will pardon as he goes out the door . As it becomes clear to all the hash that Obama has made of this country since he was unleashed upon the unsuspecting world , we all know he must go , never to darken the doors of Washington again .

“Among business executives who supported Barack Obama in 2008, he says, “there is enormously widespread anxiety over the political leadership of the country.” Mr. Zuckerman reports that among Democrats, “The sense is that the policies of this government have failed. . . . What they say about [Mr. Obama] when he’s not in the room, so to speak, is astonishing.”

“Mr. Zuckerman says that when you also consider the labor-force participation rate and the so-called “birth-death series” that measures business starts and failures, the real U.S. unemployment rate is now 20%. His voice rising with equal parts anger and sadness, he exclaims, “That’s not America!”

I’d love to see a link to Pelosi’s comment, since I can’t find it on Google or Youtube. Certainly, there were other people who criticized the Tea Party, calling them Nazis, but I don’t see that Pelosi did the same.

Of course, it’ll be interesting to see whether anyone on either side of the political aisle used the term “brownshirts” to describe their political enemies’ followers before these two right-wing nutjobs, who started using the term against Obama a little over 6-months into his term.

And yet, the TP was just calling for a stop to out of control spending and taxation and they were vilified.  Hypocrite, thy name is liberal.

  • Mencius

I honestly don’t know anything about the “anthem.” If it’s really from an Occupy site, it’s stupid, but to point to it and then extract that because these people attended, everyone at OWS is to be willfully blind. If you actually show up to one of the protests and talk to people (I have), you’d immediately see that they are pretty educated folks who love America. I know the Tea Party got heavily criticized for bad apples (racist apples, actually, including one of the supposed “founders”) and I’m probably guilty of that, but I was also willing to forgive them a few idiots if the Tea Party actually stood for anything useful. Unfortunately, they just ended up helping the Republicans who fought tooth and nail to protect Wall Street and its ability to influence the political system.

Whatever you think, the disinformation from the Right about OWS is pretty serious. Not only is the “53%” started by Red State’s founder (who claims on the 53% blog he’s struggling with 3 jobs though he’s obviously making well over $200K at a minimum) but there’s crap like the link below. Check it out. It explains pretty clearly that someone is making up 53% supporters to make it seem like there is a silent majority against OWS, when poll numbers show the opposite.

At the DC protests , NBC News star Al Sharpton whipped up the crowds , along with union thugs and Obama administration officials .

“A succession of speakers, including American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten and Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis, offered support. They warmed up the crowd for Sharpton, whose raspy voice rang out, “No justice? No peace!” as the crowd shouted along with him, over and over.
A woman stomped her feet in the grass, and people pumped their fists.
Referring to Congress, Sharpton said, “If you won’t get the jobs bill done in the suite, we will get the jobs bill done in the street!”
Of political leaders fighting and cutting social programs, he warned, “This is not about Obama,” he boomed, “this is about my mama!”
People laughed and repeated, “It’s about my mama! That’s right!”

Indeed.  Eric Cantor did not apologize for the calling the protestor’s a mob; he stuck his finger up in the air and felt which way the political winds were blowing regarding his comment.  Realizing what he said could possible be used against him politically, he then retracted his original statement.  Cantor is a self serving f–k who is now backpedaling.  His mob comment only begins to describe what his real thoughts are about the protestors.  No doubt he has real contempt for the protestors and simple wants them to go away.

Differences Between Occupy Wall Street And The Tea Party for The MSM)

There was never a turd left on a Police Car during a tea party but there
was at least one left during an Occupy Wall Street protest.

After tea party rallies many people commented about how the protesters
left the area cleaner than how they found it  This is what the Occupy
Wall Street area looks like: (see link for pic)

No one at a tea party rally ever defaced the Stars and Stripes; the same can’t be said of the Occupy Wall Street protesters.

Tea party protesters never sent an email to politicians suggesting that
it was time to kill any group of Americans, but the  Occupy Wall Street
    protests did.

Tea party protesters never made Anti-Semitic statements that “Jews Control the media and Wall Street;” Occupy Wall Street has.

Sadly, no one in the tea party movement has ever been paid to attend a rally. But some of the Occupy people get paid.

The tea party movement doesn’t have the support of this guy
(Olberdork)who supports the Occupy protests (but shhhhh we don’t want
    it).

And finally, when the tea party started, it had no support from any
party, Democrat or Republican. In fact, the GOP establishment is still
not comfortable with the Tea Party.  Occupy Wall Street was immediately
embraced by the Democratic Party Leadership such as Nancy Pelosi …

It should be no surprise that people in this country are revolting agains the government. Frankly, I’m surprised it hasn’t happened sooner than this.  Washington needs to pay attention. They sit in their fine chairs and shake their head at all of this.  First the Tea party gets blasted for forming and stating what they think, now the Ocuppy’ers are getting the same treatment.  Only these people are taking up residence.  Remember that all the media is going to show you is the negative stuff like the deficating and flag stomping and song singing.  They won’t share what is the positive side of anything.  don’t be fooled..or form opinions on what they show you.  The government needs to be worried.

Cantor is beginning to get the message. The Do Nothing US House of REPS  under the Boehner, Cantor leadership will pay in 2012. They are collecting their lucrative salaries and benefits under false pretenses. Not a single jobs bill, but plety of attacks on women’s rights.

  • Hagen619dj

They aren’t getting paid to do this.  The country is full of Occupy’ers right now. They are protesting all over the US.  No one is getting paid by anyone. contrary to your beliefs…they are liberals, democrats, republicans, independants and all races….all ashamed and mad at this government.

Their big enough now.  Things are being taken from the American people and all some of you think about is being a dye-hard democrat or liberal.  climb over that fence and SEE what’s happening. All of us are upset with this government.  Not just any specific parties…but you people just can’t get over us saying anything about what is happening here.

  • Pablo
  • Tim Tebow

    Hagen619dj,

We have laws against the poor (squatting, urinating in public, loitering, etc) but we have no laws against the sorts of crimes that occured during and before the financial crisis. Loan agents who make a commision regardless if folks are worthy, securitized debt that is so complicated nobobdy unserstands it, and rating agencies that fail to ‘rate.’ All of these and the limitation of liability that protect the folks gaming the system.

Glass Steagall made the system a lot more conservative and less lucrative. Yes, I know about Clinton and the assorted Democrats who are involved in this-so save it.

We are quite capable of criminalizing the poor–they’ve got no lobbyists–but the rich escape all the time.

    You do the math…

  • Pablo

I think we will not be around to see it BFD – I don’t think Beck meant tomorrow.

I did hear some rumbling about how Egypt should be governed from some group not in Egypt.

Let’s all admit that what Beck said, we hope is wrong, but the indicators are there.

I think he’s warning us to look beyond our noses.  To watch what is happening in the world and how it will affect us.

To watch the Soros group who is pushing for the “new world order”.

Every chaos is someone’s ‘opportunity’.  So, we keep an eye on the opportunists.  Is that such a heretic statement?

  • Tim Tebow

The very words “big government” are a lie, designed to destroy government.

Everybody wants effective government, but the rich imagine–because they are rich–that they don’t need government. They want to destroy it because they–try as they might–can’t escape all taxes.

Soldiers give EVERYTHING in battle; the rich won’t sacrifice a dime.

Most people in the middle have not received a raise in at least 4 or 5 years.  All this time the prices of necessities (including food) have skyrocketed.  The corporations never lose their bottom  line.

I read an article in local paper that Milton Hershy Medical Center’s profit was up 8% this quarter even though they have lost money because of people that can’t pay.  That is fine.  No one at the top is losing any money.  But do you think for one minute that the prices won’t go up again?  Can’t they be satisfied with an 8% increase even after losses?  Is there an end.  Probably not.

Maybe if I was a rich person I could understand better.  But it just seems that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

I worked for many years in a place that had a union.  I did not belong but I can tell you that these days the unions don’t do much for their people.  For the most part they are in bed with management and people paying dues are actually throwing their money away.  In the old days the union was very strong and did do a lot for the lower level workers.  Those days are gone.  There hasn’t been a union contract in years where the workers did not have to GIVE UP benefits.

The main reason they are revolting is because the republicans would rather address “abortion bills” for the 5th time this year and still won’t do anything about JOBS.
When you have 82% of Americans who support tax increases on the top millionaires but assholes like Eric Cantor, McConnell and Boehner and their “Grover Norquist buddies” in Congress won’t do anything about it and the JOBS, that is what has angered the American people.
When the Occupiers- the “Mob”  begin exercising their Second Amendment Rights, Eric Cantor better take cover.

It didn’t take them 6 months – they expected he would have the mess created by the very Republicans who don’t want to increase taxes now cleaned up by the end of  April 2009 – they gave him perhaps 6 weeks.

    Everyone must understand
there are no jobs because prices are excessively too high, This cuts the
multitudes of the working class out of the buying market,  products just will not sell, this has been
brought on by the Wall Street Casinos’ where trading up and down causes
millions and billions in inflation through Profits for the Wall Street manipulators
of; put and call options, There is a good side of Wall Street, it is the part
who sells stocks to grow companies which produce things for our everyday needs.
We need to demand Wall Street dismantle the Gambling Casino sections of Wall
street, which produces nothing but profits by raising and lower the stock price
while they take profits, causing hyperinflation, killing our economy, causing  job loss galore, taking profits and hiding and
hoarding them overseas.. This is also equal to sending our jobs overseas. This
is a twofold job killer which must be stopped. The leaders on Wall Street need
to address this if the problem is to be solved. They need to do it before anger
turns into craziness like we have watched on TV of overseas handling of these
same problems. If the Tea Party, the Billionaires supporting them and our
United States Congress can’t see what is going on,
it is because there are too, too many personal and special interest involved on
the part of the greedy wealthy who are not looking at the real problem. How
    could they miss it?

What the heck does the Tea Party have to do with your otherwise reasonable comment?  Do you think we are happy about the situation too?

Have you ever heard my thesis on “Economic Treason?”

“Economic Treason,” def. An act or behavior by an individual or group, that threatens the economic security of America.  Not codified by law or sanction, rather, the citizenry/community, as a whole, recognizes the negative impact of the offender’s conduct, and chastises or castigates such.

(Note: Perhaps the legal definition of “treason” could be expanded into the economic arena, carrying with it, penalties.  However, I am not, presently, venturing down that road.)
