Rick Santorum On Gay Soldier Booed During Debate: ‘Did Not Hear Those Boos’

Video

On Friday afternoon’s edition of America Live, host Megyn Kelly, who acted as a co-moderator in last night’s Fox News/Google Republican Presidential Debate, asked one of those participating candidates — Rick Santorum — about a controversial question that came up during the debate. And it wasn’t about Santorum’s particular answer to a question he had received from a gay soldier named Stephen Hill via YouTube, but, rather, about the audience’s reaction to the soldier’s question. As you’re likely well aware, there was some scattered, but robust, booing emanating from some in the crowd last night after Hill asked “Do you plan to circumvent the progress that has been made for gay and lesbian soldiers in the military?”

Santorum offered his take on what happened last night:

I condemn the people who booed that gay soldier. That soldier is serving our country. I thank him for his service to our country. I’m sure he’s doing an excellent job; I hope he is safe and I hope he returns safely and does his mission well.

I have to admit I seriously did not hear those boos. Had I heard them, I certainly would have commented on them. But, as you know, when you’re in that sort of environment, you’re sort of focused on the question and formulating you answer, and I just didn’t hear those couple of boos that were out there. But certainly had I, I would’ve said, “Don’t do that. This man is serving our country and we are to thank him for his service.”

Kelly brings up an excellent point, sharing that it was unclear whether those booing were doing so because of the soldier, or the content of his question.

Moral of the story? Think before you do something as juvenile and unproductive as booing during a debate among presidential hopefuls. Because, if you don’t, we’re left following a distracting and potentially damning thread of conversation, while the larger issues at hand — DADT and the fate of gay soldiers in the military — are shoved into the background. And, with that, I’ll just take my soapbox and be on my way.

Must have Santorum in his ears

  • Michelle

Well since there were only one or two boos in the whole auditorium, I’m not surprised he didn’t hear it.

    Why wasn’t this the headline?

I condemn the people who booed that gay soldier.

What is up with the headlines, man?

Anyhoo, good follow up by MK and Santorum.

Agreed, Obama is a much better liar. Probably due to the fact he has much more experience lying than Santorum!!

  • larrydavid1

Thanks Alex for using your “soapbox” to try to whitewash the ugly behavior of the baggers… Hey for all we know, they were booing because Pepsi was served instead of Coke at the concession? Guess we can’t jump to conclusions when conservative idiots are involved???

Better question for your “soapbox” Alex… why didn’t one of these chumps thank this soldier for his service during the debate? Standard practice for ANY politician is to start an answer to a service members question with…”well first let me thank you for your service”… Think they were afraid the audience may have had another spontaneous reaction to the beverages being served?

It is a mandate for Mediate employees to twist the story in a negative light if the story has anything to do with Republicans and twist it favorably to Democrats….it really is that simple.

And they wonder why Fox News is indisputably the most watched/listened/trusted News Media by a mile.

  • Anonymous

Well I guess one person’s attempt not to jump to a conclusion is another person’s “whitewashing.” Just part of what makes this world such a rich and interesting place replete with diverse ideas and stimulating discussion!  ♥

  • Michelle

Well, it’s easy to lie when the corrupt, liberal media refuses to call you out on your lies.

  • Anonymous

People are making too big of a deal about this, while booing the soldier was disgraceful, it was like two guys doing it. Not a “crowd” as has been described here and elsewhere.

  • Michelle

Oh look at me, I’m a cool liberal who throws around the term teabagger.  Put a cork in it.

  • Hugo Daun

There also seems to be a mandate that “conservatives” must continually cry and whine about how shitty MediaITE is, rather than simply finding websites that don’t hurt their wittle feelings so much.

LOL you should see the comments on the article where the drunk gay townie calls Bristol Palin a “whore” for taking a rough ride from a mechanical bull.  They’re talking about sex toys, DP, S&M, and even Bukkake.  It’s really getting absurd.

Because you were there…you silly kunt.

The liberal media would rather focus on things like this.  It keeps them from having to have to talk about what an utter failure Obama has been.

     My bad. Thanks JSC.

Wow, you can’t even spell your insult correctly.  Try again, loser.

It almost appeared that he was agreeing with them while he was up on stage. Too bad you didn’t praise his service and denounce them Rick. You only do when you are called out on it. A complete phony.

  • Glutton

It’s just all over the place.  Let’s just say the Palin’s make for interesting articles.  If you really are Alex ALverez, you might want to remember that for your future articles.  Tommy Christopher is getting about 300 comments per Palin article.  In the world of blogging, it’s not really about whether they read your page but if they simply visit your page, am I right?

The commentary of Mondays_Opinion aside, wish I had been there at the debate last night.  Had I been, I would have put my foot in the ass of each and everyone of those who booed that soldier.  I don’t care if it was his sexual orientation or the question he asked, there is no room for that type of behaviour, especially in a forum so critical for the success of the Republican candidate, whoever it might be.  I think Santorum’s answer was a disgrace and I for one, will NOT even consider him as a potential candidate after last night’s performance.  I wish to put the remaining candidates on notice right now: You talk of rescinding the new policy at it applies to gay and lesbian members of our Armed Forces, and you have lost a good chunk of potential support!  I hope you are paying attention.

  • TbagsRstupid

Why didnt he speak up on stage when he had a real audience?

  • Anonymous

“If you really are Alex ALverez…”

When it’s a Mediaite moderator, their banner is blue and has a star next to their name. If you put your  mouse over the star, it says “Moderator”.

That’s how I know that there was a Tommy Christopher impersonator trolling a few days ago (no blue and no star). Although it was obvious enough by their comments.

Yeah, it’s a little too convenient to say you didn’t hear them and then condemn them AFTER the fact.  If he really condemned them, he’d have the grapes to do it during the debate.  Nothing wrong with saying “no no no…hear me out…”.

    but he didn’t.

…and your posts were some of the vile ones.  Good job there jerk.

  • Michelle

Conservative blogger Sarah Rumpf, who was at the debate, tweeted me to say “Only a few booed. Many shushed & hissed at booing.”

Don’t let the truth get in your way though.

  • Anonymous

It may very well NOT be the entire audience, but just tossing it aside as “only a couple of people” doesn’t make it go away.  I’ll argue that if the same kind of activity went down during a Dem debate….as you say, “only one or two boos in the whole auditorium”, you’d likely be classifying it a bunch of people.

  • Anonymous

How do you ignore stoopid like CC? What a DB!

  • Nature Freak

I commented. Could not help it. It happens.

  • Glutton

Megyn’s problem is that she was on maternal leave and had some time to live a normal life, and when she got back, she realized that most of the people she interviews are a bunch of arrogant, bigoted, d-bags. That’s why she’s having so many of these confrontations.  Watch her even go brunette soon.

  • Anonymous

    Then hear this one: Boooooooooooo!

  • Michelle

It wasn’t even close to the entire audience so this is much ado about nothing.  Personally, I think the booing was awful and shouldn’t have happened, but there is a bad apple if every group.  I’m sure this stuff happens at the Dem debates too, but do you really think the liberal media would highlight it?  This is just the media trying to divert our attention from the utter failure Obama has been.

  • Anonymous

He can say that he didn’t hear the boos, but he really has no excuse for not thanking the soldier for his service during the debate.  Most candidates would have said, “First of all I thank you for your service, but this is what I think.”  He didn’t do that and instead just launched into his anti gay spiel.  It wasn’t until gay GOP groups called him out on it that he thanked the soldier after the fact, i.e. the naxt day.

  • Hugo Daun

Who wants to get rid of you, dummy?

    I would miss the comedy.

  • USAdood

It’s not really a politician’s job to silence free speech… yeah the people shouldn’t have been booing but you can’t get mad at Santorum for the actions of others’

Bringing up Obama everytime a Republican does something bad is beginning to lose it’s relevance, lol. What a sad pathetic dude, nice avatar though.

That comment is pretty rich, Colorado-Conservative, coming from someone who resides in a right wing bubble of lies.  You wouldn’t know the truth if it came up and kicked you in the ass.  You know, it doesn’t even bother me that you are a proud conservative.  But you are a fucking hypocrite (pardon my French) to completely ignore the obvious lies and deceit and fascist policies put forth by your shit politicians that has fucked this country up.  Why don’t you pull your head out of Rush Limbaugh’s ass and go learn some history beyond Reagan or forever be a dumbshit talking out your ass.

Sorry for my “meanness” Colorado_Conservative. But after more than 30 years of the Reagan revolution, eight years of the most incompetent president, George W. Bush, three years of Boehner and McConnell and their gang of tea bag obstructionists doing everything they can to see this president fail while ignoring the fate of so many Americans who are hurting, Limbaugh and his ilk (Hannity, Beck, Savage, etc.) dominating the radio airwaves making millions of their brand of fear and loathing that has turned this country to shit (… and the world)… when I see a stupid ass comment like yours, what can I say.  These people who influence you have turned your kind into mean, selfish, ignorant, cold, cynical sheep… the true ugly American recognized around the world.

  • Fudge441

At it’s core the tea party consists of ingnorant bigots at best and ignorant racists at worst. Just horrible excuses for human beings.

  • Bob

That’s exactly what conservatives did for the handful of boos Trent Lott got when he arrived at the Wellstone memorial (Lott even laughed them off at the time.) One day and a heaping helping of FOX News distortions and canned outrage later, you had folks like Peggy Noonan lying and saying “10,000 people” booed Lott, and Tucker Carlson was claiming “conservatives were shouted down when they tried to speak” (a total fabrication Lott and the GOP never tried to go to the mic).

  • Bob

    We’ve heard the joke, grandpa.
You kind of strike me as the kind of guy who would still be doing Austin Powers impressions 6 years to late.

  • Fudge441

You like Rick Santorum are a total buffoon.

  • Michelle

I agree, but I’m not going to pretend I know what’s it’s like to be in a televised debate. I don’t think we should say he deliberately didn’t thank him.

So at best who might be ignorant and racist?  Are you the worst?

What doesn’t the left and their unholy alliance with gays understand about a VOLUNTEER MILITARY?

Israel, as just one example, has required military service but most gays & lesbians in Israel opt for the alternative civilian service opton that fulfills their military requirement.  This is largely the case with most other countries that have required military service and allow gays & lesibans to serve.

We don’t need social experiments in the military.

Who said he should have silenced free speech? He stated that if he knew they were booing he would have refuted it. Talking=/=silencing free speech. The criticism was not of Santorum for the actions of others, but of the actions made by him. He basically agreed on stage with them and in retrospect when it was brought up made a bunch of claims that are complete crap. He didn’t repudiate such distasteful conduct, but pretended he would have even though the tape says otherwise. I agree that its by no means his job to repudiate the audience, my criticism was that he is full of crap.

  • Fudge441

Santorum has the mind of a baboon and the face of a ferret.

  • Fudge441

A turd is well out of your league.

  • Anonymous

And apparently the concrete floors amplified the boos, making them sound far more disgusting and repugnant than they really were. Uh huh.

  • Glutton

Rick Santorum is LYING.  From the looks of the video, he was riling up the crowd to boo.  After the boos, you could see Santorum looking into the direction of the boos and you could see him nodding, and he says, “I know, right?”  Then he goes on his homophobic tirade.  He heard the boos and he relished in it.

  • Glutton

Maybe to make, but I’m sure they sell for a lot more than that.  If they were a dime a dozen, I shouldn’t have gotten into trouble when I used to burn their heads off as a kid.

  • Glutton

Just because someone is smart, doesn’t mean they’re out of your league.  That all depends on your level of CONFIDENCE.

  • Glutton

Out of your league has NOTHING to do with intelligence.  It’s really about how attractive they are.

  • Gav

  • CTognotti

Rick Santorum condemning somebody who booed that gay soldier is a petty misdirection. Santorum himself wants not just to boo this man, but to kick him out. Given the choice between being booed by some rube at a debate and having my career stripped from me due to my inborn nature, I think the boos would be a bit more tolerable.

  • El Snarko

So does this mean Santorum (the person, not the frothy discharge) would condone that proud soldier marrying another man? Because that would completely contradict his past statements, and his party line.

  • Anonymous

Did any of the presidential hopefuls comment on it at the debate? Anyone? Just curious. I would hope someone would have spoken up and chastised those booing.

  • Anonymous

    What was good about it?
I don’t blame RS for the boos but did any candidate condemn them?

What I do hold RS accountable for is his nonsensical babbling answer that got cheers and applause from the audience. It’s funny nobody is talking about that.

  • Anonymous

Did any of them? Did the candidates not talking hear the boos and remain silent?

  • Anonymous

    ,.. awesomee ..

  • Anonymous

What surprises me is that nobody is calling out Santorum for his nonsensical answer or the chorus of applause and cheers it got. Watch the clip again , it’s not just one or two cheering his babbling.

They want special privileges? No you moron. They want to be treated the same as the straight soldiers.
Social experimentation has no place in the armed forces? Right, remember back in 1948 when we experimented and integrated the  armed forces? Look how badly that worked out.
So sex shouldn’t be an issue in military service?  But it has been Rick. Up to now, under DADT, people who served well and honorably were discharged if the service found out they were gay. It had nothing to do with their military record, and it didn’t matter if they had expensive special training and were a real asset to the military and our overall security. They were gone,… just for being gay.
If you go back to DADT, per your suggestion, you’d be doing the opposite of what you said 10 freaking seconds ago you dolt!!
Someone please explain why the hell the audience was clapping and cheering for that nonsense. Was it just a general affirmation of Rick’s irrational anti gay position?

Yay Rick!! It doesn’t matter if you’re making any sense or not….You don’t like gays and neither do we…YAY!
How dare they ask the special privilege of equality. Of all the nerve.

DADT is ridiculous. It basically says “We have this rule that you’re welcome to break, unless we find out you’re breaking it, then we’re going to come down on you.” Which, how is that functionally different than any other rule? As they say, it isn’t illegal until you get caught.

One way or the other, and stick with it, please.

  • Anonymous

You cannot hide behind the uniform if you enter the political arena.  This subject affects the soldier personally but still, it is a highly contentious political issue.  He can be booed or applauded, it’s up the the listener.  It seems like only left wing soldiers are allowed to enter the political fray without repercussions.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joshuabozeman Joshua Taj Bozeman

Cool.  So, everytime a GOP debate happens, we lie about the audience.  A “robust” booing from the audience?  I heard TWO PEOPLE.  TWO PEOPLE out of thousands in the audience boo.  And we have NO idea what they were booing.  What part of what the soldier said were they booing?  The media can’t help but try to demonize the GOP.  I get it.  But the constant lying is getting old.

  • Anonymous

In fact, he didn’t note his answer to that question but his answer was that he would go back to DADT.

  • Anonymous

Social experimentation has no place in the armed forces? Right, remember
back in 1948 when we experimented and integrated the  armed forces?

That wasn’t social experimentation. That was the ending of such, which began when Progressive hero Woodrow Wilson segregated the military along with most of the federal workforce in 1912. Look up the scam Wilson pulled on W.E.B. DuBois, and you can still see Democrats doing it today.

  • Anonymous

Come back to reality.  I can’t believe you republicans and your excuse “only one or two boos” or “only one or two saying ‘let him die’”.  Baloney. there were many many boos and many many “let him die” and cheering.  And for your information – even one is too many.

  • Anonymous

One was too many, but I do realize that not all republicans think the same way just as not all democrats are liberals although most of you seem to think so.

  • Anonymous

My sentiments exactly. Remember that the next time you begin putting all democrats in the same basket. You sure have a short memory if you don’t recall how bad George W was. If the republicans would actually work with the president, perhaps all Americans would be winners.

Question:  How many of those debaters were actually wearing “flag pins”?  Remember the republicans who thought it was just shameless that candidate Barack Obama wasn’t wearing a flag pin?  uh oh.  I see just a few flag pins — Jon Huntsman, Herman Cain, Rick Santorum had flag pins on.  The rest DIDN’T including Rick Perry and Mitt Romney.  For shame…

Pablo, I’m newish here, and I was curious….are you the Head Troll?

  • Ben Dover

No Monday, we are still out here, but we are just too embarrassed by some of our inbred “kin” to show our faces.  Most of us Republicans don’t want our president to fail, don’t want the Congress to fritter away its days worrying about gay marriage while the country burns economically, and certainly are not happy that our party cannot put forth a well educated, well spoken candidate who is not beholden to the Cranky Conservatives and Evangelicals who want everyone to live their lives as repressed old white men who fear change.

But don’t worry, come election day, if our party offers us a buffet of overcooked Perry, undercooked Bachmann or lukewarm Romney, we will hold our nose and scoop up a heaping helping of Obama.

no, i mean the Wellstone memorial you clearly did not watch, and accepted a fabricated version of events that has been debunked repeatedly.

  • Wes

Democrats controlled Congress for FOUR YEARS, had big-government Bush on their side to bail out big banks and rich guys like Warren Buffet, (Republicans voted against the bailouts), then they had two full years of Obama… and what did they accomplish?  Jammed through Obamacare with backroom deals and bribes, passed a bs stimulus bill no one read for shovel-ready jobs even Obama says don’t exist, etc.
They had control of Congress and the White House and still couldn’t be bothered to even try to pass a budget for TWO YEARS.  But now it’s suddenly the House Republicans and the Tea Party’s fault?  What a joke.

What have Dems and Obama done while in control besides further increase the debt and waste the country’s money on stupid crap like Solyndra and more wars?  Hell, and then Charles Rangel gets honored this week after being censured less than a year ago.  Vote these morons out!

Neither is it a social experiment to grant equality to men and women serving honorably today. That’s the point. Santorum was dead wrong and the audience cheered abd applauded for him.

Yes. Gary Johnson said they were definitely audible and that he regretted not speaking up.

Oh conservatives… you still buy into this trope?

  • Anonymous

At every debate there will be a couple of people in the audience who will do something
    inappropriate .
This is a tactic that has gotten traction in the media and it will continue .

  • Valkyrie101

Santorum is in the race to feature him as the “tea party” VP that Mitt will certainly need if he is to gather the right wing base. I think he is being politically incorrect here to show his credentials. As for the shout out at the debate, who knows where those kooks come from who do that or what their motive is, but they are like streakers at a baseball game. You never show those on TV because it may encourage others to act just as disrespectfully just for the notoriety of it all, like Ann Coulter. Santorum properly down plays that incident.

  • Valkyrie101

I think Megyn is obsessed with the White Stripes. She goes with black, red, and white almost everytime.

It just never occurred to him to thank the gay soldier, because he is a douchebag. Bet you he was angry that he had to answer the question at all. He really wanted to kneecap his opponents and talk about how smart he is. Minorities are just little people thwarting his ambition.

Homosexuality has been tolerated, encouraged and condoned in the past. Homosexuals, being homosexual, have always driven the behavior right back into the penal code. It is NOT PROGRESS to tolerate, encourage or condone a behavior that requires predatory action to pass itself from one generation to the next. The homosexual soldier should always be booed. What kind of damn fools give military training to predators who will use that training to subdue their victims in the future? It will happen, It must happen. A new generation of teen and pre-teen boys MUST be raped ( they call it “initiated”) to pass the behavior on to the next generation. Giving a homosexual military training is the height of stupidity…not “progress.”

  • Pork+Cheese

The YouTube comments say Bristol went there spoiling for a fight, since the man who yelled at her has a Twitter feed dissing her mom and hangs out with Levi. I’m sick of the Palins, and I can see why gays or any other minorities who feel threatened by Sarah Palin would lash out.

  • MidasRex

“Moral of the story? Think before you do something as juvenile and
unproductive as booing during a debate among presidential hopefuls.”

Additional moral of the story – stop buying into the media’s spin on stuff like this, and contest it, suggesting that they’re wrong and simply playing politics.  Don’t let them get away with it, and stop playing along with it – dispute the premise.

The man should have beeen booed.

Active duty soldiers can not speak out against current or past military actions or policies., whatever it is

As for “gay rights” in the military, thats just plain retarded . The military service , by design, make you agree to give up your individual status and to melt it. Multi Culturalism has nothing to do with military service, esp ones based on your sexual desires.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sha-Sene/100002856648608 Sha Sene

The entire notion of “rights” based on your  sexual desires flies in the face of reason and logic, and are an affront to actual rights and liberty

He is either not very alert or hearing impaired.  Since he seemed to hear all the questions and dialogue I am guessing he is simply not a very alert person – after all whom can hear loud boos when you are trying to ‘concentrate’

By the way, interestingly no one else heard the boos either.  Maybe there were no boos.  Maybe it was just our imagination.

The reason gays in the military are problematic in wartime is the same reason men and women don’t serve in the same uni:, Allegiance to an individual above the group can compromise unit cohesiveness. This facor can be eliminated in same-sex heterosexual units.

Santorum heard it. He paused before beginning to speak. If he heard the gay soldier how could he not hear the the assholes in the crowd. His response was odd as well. Why did he start talking about sex in the military that wasn’t the question. Heteralsex is forbidden. I should know, I received a Field Grade Article 15 in 1972 for conducting unbecoming after returning from Nam and being processed at Ramstein Airforce Base in West Germany.

So obviously friendship in the military should be outlawed, right?  Because clearly that just promotes allegiance to an individual over the group.

Dude, there is a reason that almost every single one of our allies – from the ever-infallible Israel to Great Britain – have been allowing open gay service for a decade or more.  It’s because it’s not a big deal.

The only allies that don’t allow such service?  Those would be the Islamist theocracies like Saudi Arabia.

You’re right.  Those candidates should have just stood their silently while their supporters jeered at one of the American heroes that they all claim to so stridently support.

Half truths and half lies… that’s what you are all about.  The brain works easier for you.  Nice simple black and white conclusions.  “Vote these morons out!”… and vote in bigger morons that will only exasperate the blueprint they have put forth since the election of Reagan.  Which will further erode our society… more wealth removed from the middle class to the ruling wealthy elite… more rights and freedoms taken away from the poor and middle class… further erosion of a sound education on a society further weakening its democracy… further destruction on our environment… that is what is guaranteed from the far right which is the Republican/Libertarian/Tea Party today.

Your evaluation needs work.  I suggest you go back and work on it.  You won’t find the answers at FOX News or with the Rush Limbaugh types.

Obviously? Not at all. One woman in an otherwise all male unit during wartime has the potential to disrupt unit cohesiveness that would not exist in an all-heterosexual unit of men. Can it be overcome? Perhaps in peacetime. Many non-bureaucratic brass believe it’s a bad idea with respect to military readiness.

Dear Sidney:  Homosexuals are like lepers and should be kept away from normal white people.  I agree with you.

  • Joshua Snyder

Educate yourself. There was no speaking out you goof
he asked a question opinion was not given.
There is nothing about sexual desire in this.

Steve (MY HUSBAND) is serving in Iraq right now
protecting your liberties.  Every day his
friends and fellow soldiers ask him how his wife is how she has been and how
she is handling things.  HIS WIFE and he
lies because he’s been serving since desert storm and feels great honor serving
people, even yourself.  These troops bond
and become family they spend months and months or even years away from the ones
they love.  Denying a person the ability
to share his personal life NOT SEXUAL and be honest about who supports them
back home is what’s being fought for.
Soldiers are proud of their families as much as they are serving this
    country.

Steve deserved respect, his answer was expected we
all know his stance and wanted the public to hear it. BUT when he let that
crowd boo (and I don’t buy he didn’t hear it cause every other candidate did)
and then didn’t thank Steve for his service that’s disrespect.   Ricky
is no patriot or leader nor is anyone else who stood on that stage who let a
vet and active duty service member get booed.

How do you guys even know that the person wasn’t gay who yelled out BOO, and was booing Santorum for his position on DADT/gay issues?

    Seriously.

You don’t hear a BOO when the guy says he is a gay soldier and talks about how he had to hide. BOO is yelled after he asks, “ “Do you plan to circumvent the progress that has been made for gay and lesbian soldiers in the military?”

My opinion, it was either directed at Santorum for his views on gay issues, or over the ending of the policy – NOT the soldier.

Of course, the Left ran with it and used it to attack all Conservatives as homophobic….

How Sen. Santorum should have answered the shameless soldier’s question:

“A serviceman’s preference of sexual partners does not define who he is as human
being any more than his preference of any other type of conduct. Our Armed
Forces have the right –and the obligation– to demand appropriate sexual
behavior from its members. And those who engage in inappropriate behavior have
to face the consequences. Now, you may not like that your particular behavior
preference is historically and legally deemed inappropriate in our Armed
Forces, but it is what it is. You knew the rules when you applied for the job.
Is it fair and ethical for you to now undermine those rules? No, you have to
own what you did. Don’t you think you are a little too big to be whining about
    it now?”
