SNL Presents The 7th Or 8th GOP Debate With Host Fox’s ‘Shepard Smith’

video

Saturday Night Live is back, and they commemorated it by covering “the 7th or 8th” GOP debate. Bill Hader’s  Shep Smith hosted this debate, which was between Mitt Romney, Rick Perry and “six other people who’ll never be president!” Hader had some tough questons for Alec Baldwin’s Perry, who reiterated that he thinks Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, and that 10-year-old girls should be vaccinated against HPV so they can “begin a meaningful sexual relationship.” Jason Sudeikis’s Mitt Romney maintained that he was the perfect Republican candidate…when you look at all the other crazypants Republican candidates. Taran Killan was also on hand to give his best offensive “John Huntsman spent two years in China” impression. You might not think that would be offensive, but you’d be surprised!

The sketch lasted approximately 1,000 years, but Hader’s Smith and Andy Samberg’s Rick Santorum were somewhat funny…even when making a decidedly not funny joke about NBC’s “Whitney.” Herman Cain promised to deliver pizza to the entire country. Also, Kristen Wiig’s Michele Bachmann dreams of a vicious, blood-thirsty return to caveman times, and had a killer closing line: “Fences, Jesus, papilloma, eyeballs.” Finally, Perry became too tired to go on and we were able to wrap up. Phew! Welcome to season 37, y’all!

SNL makes fun of everyone. I’m glad they are actually balanced; them and South Park.

  • Tim Tebow

    Pizza Man for President?

Godfather’s is great when you’re 20 yrs old and drunk, want a large pizza for 4 bucks knowing you’re just gonna throw it up within a half hour. But who else eats that stuff? I know…in Ohio, it’s ethnic food.

Fast food president fits perfectly for the ‘give me convenience or death’ crowd.

  • Anonymous

LOL at Newt Gingrich giving up mid debate. Everyone knows he’s not really running. He’s just there to keep his profile high so he can do speeches and books.

  • Tim Tebow

He needs to keep the profile up if this wife gets cancer.

“SNL makes fun of everyone. I’m glad they are actually balanced; them and South Park.”

When has SNL ever poked fun at Barack Obama?  Really, can you think of ANY joke that actually came at Obama’s expense?

    I sure can’t

  • joe

it would be even funnier if not so true…

Newt would destroy that piece of shit, our crook, snake oil salesmen in chief in a debate!

  • Mike Charles

It was pretty clever,  these guys pull off a comedy routine so effortlessly.  That takes talent.

Yes. The I caught OBL strut, among others.

USS republitarian it has been done. May i suggest a bing/yahoo/google search.

    :)

I did and found it in 10 seconds. stop being a lazy sponge.

you can’t because that would work with your talking point

unfortunately, i just removed your talking point

  • The Real Royal Emperor

That describes Godfather’s pizza exacty right. Cain, as well.

  • Sharpo

i could destroy letmebeclear in a pissing contest. or a measuring contest.

thats what letmebeclear’s wife said. ;)

Funniest SNL in a long time.  That was awesome !

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Can you believe Tollbooth, who campaigned heavily and at some considerable expense for the straw poll, got smacked down by the Godfather of Krappy Pizza? And, he barely beat Willard who didn’t even campaign? Talk about an SNL sketch. Well, you can’t say I didn’t warn you. Bring T-Paw back.

  • Nancillarypeloslinton

joe? Oh, you mean joeBLOW! You’re that orally defecating roadkill chef that serves up DemoKKKratic racism and hatred just because you’re some fat bastard Union Steward that lives off all the poor minorities and illegals that are union dues paying members just so you can stuff your fat pig gullet with triple dinner size servings of macaroni and cheese with squirrel and deer remnants. Better get to likin’ Cuban food fatso, you’re punkass is going bye-bye when we take America back.

Yeah, you “proved” it to me by telling me to do a Google search.

You can’t be that fucking stupid, and despite your hopes and dreams, no one else is either.

When has SNL EVER painted Obama as a bumbling buffoon, idiot or moron?  They haven’t.  Ever.

I didn’t have the chance to catch the show tonight, but I’m fairly confident that SNL didn’t have a skit on the executives of Solyndra asserting their 5th Amendment rights when facing Congressional questions about how they lost the $500M tax-payer dollars that was gifted to them by Barack Obama.  Nope, nothing funny about that, I guess.

  • joe

    dude==why the hate?
did you forget about haliberton losing billions?
do you know how much we spend/waste on wars, rich assholes who use the media to play both sides?
do you know how much the oil companies get from us? how much we pay in blood and treasure to protect their oil? wall street?
we are giving away trillions to people who care nothing about us or jobs or americas economy.

Who in the hell are you refering to? I don’t get it.

  • http://twitter.com/WorldDivider Mark Prior

They can’t come up with a decent guy to impersonate Newt? Romney and Michelle Bachmann were the best impressions however the Perry and Newt ones didn’t do it for me.

  • Socal4patrick

I love how SNL bashes the negroes and the b*tches..keep up the good work ny joooz. We love ya.

Solyndra could never be as funny as Team GOP ’12.

Solyndra was an Obama’s failure (did you hear me?), and Bin Laden was an Obama victory.

Romney: “Thanks for not playing the Mormon card, though I know it’s tempting.”
Perry: “Oh, ah’m gonna do it soon, real soon. You just wait.”

  • Bob

I’m guessing Jim Downey, their long-time conservative writer, had a big hand in this one. Whoever wrote it did their homework, and had a lot of the candidate’s styles down well.

  • Rex the Wonder God

No no – Sharpo’s right. Bachmann: You know you want it … Weiner: Here I am baby! America would watch that show every day, just not at work or when the kids and wife are still up.

    Kristen Wiig is brilliant.

  • Bob

Their Newt looked and sounded more like Marcus Bachmann to me.

  • Rex the Wonder God

He’s an American Success Story. They even made the Herman Cain story into a movie:

     http://tinyurl.com/2qtjlb

  • Anonymous

I am mad as hell that they didn’t give Ron Paul more time.

  • Glutton

They should bring back Will Ferrell to impersonate Rick Parry, just to remind everyone that he’s just like Bush.

  • Glutton

Herman Cain made a very valid point.  Pizza is always there.

  • Glutton

LOL a Republican crying about the political bias of a COMEDY skit.  What a surprise!

  • Glutton

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. the funny people on TV aren’t making jokes about the person I want them to make a joke about.  USS_Republitarian angry!  USS_Republitarian SMASH!

  • Glutton

I wasn’t happy that the only thing they asked him was that gottcha puppy question.

  • Glutton

Huntsman acting like he was Chinese and then finishing off with “HOW YOU PAY” was my favorite part.

  • Bob

thinking the same thing – just do his Dubya, with no change in the character whatsoever.

  • Rex the Wonder God

You’re right: except for Kristen Wiig – who, even though I expect she isn’t anything of the sort in her own life, has a gift for parodying severely repressed types – and Jason Sudeikis – who finds self-absorbed egoists well within his range (A great idea would have been for Sudeikis to play BOTH Romney and Huntsman.)- no one else with the current crew has that uncanny ability that Darrell Hammond has to capture the innermost monster in a political candidate. Can you imagine Hammond getting a chance to sink his teeth into Rick Perry? Look what he did to McCain with that “tiny friend’ bit, and he looks nothing like McCain. Well, there’s still a lot of time, so we can hope; certainly it’s beyond the range of Alex Baldwin, who probably would have done a better Romney; maybe he and Sudeikis should have switched. (An even greater idea: cast Sudeikis as ALL of Perry, Romney, Huntsman and Santorum. That would be deliciously vicious, but NBC would probably not want to risk the fall-out from conservatives.)

I think the main reason SNL has been so ineffective in skewering Obama is that the one time Fred Armisten really caught him was that “I keep it cool” bit – yet for some reason SNL abandoned that and went back to the sort of one-dimensional cardboard characterizations on display in this skit.

Assuming Herman Cain sticks in the race for a long time – I think he will, because the guys who run the G.O.P. are going to want to take a serious look at him as candidate for V.P.; obviously, if Cain can sell black people on the Pillsbury Doughboy, that crap Burger King serves up and supersaturated fat pizza, he can sell quite a lot of them on voting Republican – then SNL maybe should give some serious consideration to letting Tracy Morgan loose on him. Morgan, like Wiig and Hammond, has a gift for divining the most disturbing depths of people’s souls.

The other no-chance candidate who certainly is going to hang in to the bitter end is Ron Paul. Off the top of my head I can’t think of who would be perfect for playing him, but maybe that’s because no one plays him like Ron Paul. Pat Paulsen would be good, other than being dead – which isn’t necessarily a deal breaker: you could show an old film of Paulsen not moving and just add a voice-over on stuff Ron Paul actually says, and that could do it.

All that said, I would think SNL IS seriously working on this,  because there’s a continuing feature bit here on the Republican Debates that could take them all the way to March, at least.

  • crysis

i think they can all agree to make english the official language, except for rick perry.

  • Anonymous

Are you sure you’re not thinking of Dominos?

You can’t get a large at Godfathers for 4 bucks.  It’s more like 20 bucks.

Politics aside, I actually think Godfathers has the best tasting Pizza of any of the large chains. They are also the most expensive of all the large chains, but you get what you pay for, I guess.

  • Glutton

Meth is a hell of a drug, isn’t it?

  • Glutton

True, Rick Parry would bring a lot of jobs back, to George W. Bush impersonators.

  • Anonymous

That was hilarious by recent SNL standards. No point moaning about all the misrepresentation because anyone stupid enough to get their info from a comedy show has already cast their early vote for the Dems in 2012 anyway. It’d be nice to see some more SNL jabs at Obama this season they’ve had a little handful in the past, they’ve shown surprisingly little of the nauseating reverence to Obama  seen on almost every other show apart from FOX news.

  • Anonymous

There is just one line that can’t be left alone. That stupid “Your only experience is being CEO of Godfather’s pizza” line.

Right, and Obama’s only experience before becoming president was flouncing around Chicago, writing poems and leaving them on Saul Alinsky’s grave, and doing “community organizing” whatever that is.

  • Possumtrot1

For SNL it was very funny especially with Alec Baldwin.

I understand that you hate oil companies and you have a right to not like how they do business. But we don’t “give” them anything. If the get any type of tax break, we are letting them “keep” more of what is already theirs. I just hate when people assume that the government “gives” anything. In order for the government to “give” anything, they have to “take” first. The government does not produce wealth (other than printing money). It must raise revenues by taking first.

I am not a no government anarchist, just your assertion that the government “gives” is wrong. If you personally get a tax break, the government didn’t give you anything. They just took less of what was yours to begin with. You were the one worked for it and produced it.

    Portsmouth, N.H., Aug. 11, 2009

    “No, no. I have been practicing…I bowled a 129. It’s like — it was
like Special Olympics, or something.” –making an off-hand joke during
an appearance on “The Tonight Show”, March 19, 2009 (Obama later called the head of the Special Olympics to apologize)

“Just this past week, we passed out of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee
    — which is my committee — a bill to call for divestment from Iran as
way of ratcheting up the pressure to ensure that they don’t obtain a
nuclear weapon.” –referring to a committee he is not on, Sderot,
    Israel, July 23, 2008

“On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen
heroes — and I see many of them in the audience here today — our sense
    of patriotism is particularly strong.”

“I’ve now been in 57 states — I think one left to go.” –at a campaign event in Beaverton, Oregon

“In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten
thousand people died — an entire town destroyed.” –on a Kansas tornado
    that killed 12 people

That’d be because Obama is neither a bumbling fool nor an idiot. If you’re referring to the fact that he’s always trying to compromise with the Republicans (like that would ever work) and needs to grow a pair, I’d have to say that’s hardly proof that he’s an idiot. Näive perhaps. A dreamer most certainly. Not an idiot.

  • Valkyrie101

“People will always connect the horrible economy with Obama?”
Seems like in December 2008, with the American and world economies about to melt down, with the nation forced to spend a trillion dollars to keep it above water, that it is a little silly trying to pin that on Obama. Rather, Obama has had to deal with that bad economy with an opposition party that has stated its intention to keep it bad. Speaking of bad, did you know that in his third year as President, after likewise inheriting a very bad economy, the unemployment rate under Reagan was 9.5%? Of course the top tax bracket was much higher, too, at 50%.

Reagan wasn’t divisive and didn’t descend to class warfare and speak about ‘enemies’ and holding ‘pitchforks.’ That’s where your beloved OBAMO fails; he’s actually in FAVOR of a ruinous economy. Dude, what does Obama have to to do with US Corporations moving their manufacturing overseas during the past ten years? We gave the corporations lower taxes and credits equaling even lower taxes, and they used the influx of money to invest in other nations, (and to pay themselves through the roof insane money). It was the private sector, therefore, not the government, that chose to create US unemployment. And they did that to increase profits, which they did in record fashion.

When the opposition party votes as a block against any proposal the President makes, short of spending cuts, and says that corporate taxes need to be “lowered”, and argues even that it is unfair to the rich that poor people do not pay a bigger share of our national tax burden, then there is not much Obama can do. There is no middle ground because the republicans refuse to budge from their extreme position. And they will even threaten to wreck the economy if their demands are not met. It was completely different after the 1980 election, with democrats voting frequently in support of Reagan bills. Now it is unheard of for Obama to get other than token republican votes. That is because the republicans, as they stated, are intent on bringing the president, and if necessary, our economy down, so that they can win the next election. That can not work, because God is just.

  • Wake up America

SNL has to go after all republicans this season because their Obama is tumbling fast. Jeff (GE) has to get Obama reelected or there goes his billions. So sad that they think people are that stupid that they will fall for Obamas no do nothing speeches. 2012 will let us know if the people that were had in 2008 were just asleep at the wheel or if they’re just plain stupid. Stay tune!

  • Wake up America

You have the nerve to call someone a Moron when you are one of the morons that helped put our nation in the toilet by putting this moron in the White House? That’s about right!

  • Wake up America

Now that was hilarious! However that’s what Obama is doing to all of us! Sexing us!

  • Wake up America

No, bascically you described 20 year olds that voted for Obama. When they turn 30 they’ll wake up from their stupor and realize that they help elect someone that actually will affect them and their wallets. Too funny!

Holy shit, I was about as tired as Alec Baldwin by the end of that long-winded sketch. And what a pile of shit it was. The only impersonations work a damn were from Jason Sudiekis, Bill Hader, and Kristen Wiig. The rest were awful, boring, and unfunny — particularly Baldwin’s. Sounds like even his friggin’ episodes of SNL are gonna be a drag now, but I did give up on that show long, long ago.

Bring back Kids in the Hall, dammit!

  • http://www.facebook.com/tony.westover Tony Westover

So SS isn’t a Ponzi Scheme?

Well, look at what lib Paul Krugman said about SS in 1996:

“Add New York Times columnist Paul Krugman to the list of detractors as demonstrated by something he wrote for the December 1996/January 1997 issue of Boston Review:

Social Security is structured from the point of view of the recipients as if it were an ordinary retirement plan: what you get out depends on what you put in. So it does not look like a redistributionist scheme. In practice it has turned out to be strongly redistributionist, but only because of its Ponzi game aspect, in which each generation takes more out than it put in. Well, the Ponzi game will soon be over, thanks to changing demographics, so that the typical recipient henceforth will get only about as much as he or she put in (and today’s young may well get less than they put in). ”

  • Tim Tebow

    Uhm no, Monty.

If government provides security and infrastructure for ten businesses, say, and one of those companies is allowed to not pay its share of taxes, then the other companies are effectively subsidizing that tax exempt company. They are not paying their fair share.

To allow a company, or individual, to not pay their fair share is to give them a free ride on the rest of us.

You drive to church on roads that I paid for through taxes, but that church “got those roads for free.”

So, yeah…it’s perfectly reasonable to suggest that corporations or individuals are getting something for free when they don’t pay their share of taxes. Oil Companies are given a free ride: their product is viewed as vital to national security.

Socialize the risk (we pay for war); privatize the profits.

I read your comment below and am responding here as I can’t below.. You make a really good point when you say that Obama and his policies had nothing to do with American corporations moving their manufacturing overseas.  Your assessment of that is dead on, but that is not why the president’s policies are being criticized.

Current criticism of the president comes because his policy does not foster private sector growth it actually inhibits it.  The president’s policies tend to put more uncertainty in the market place and do little to calm the uneasiness growing in this country regarding our economic future.  IMO it really is this simple.  It is an important fact that businesses can simply pack up and leave should our domestic policies and taxing policies make it difficult to operate in our economy, we have seen in the last year alone the president’s BFF Jeffrey Imelt do just that with 10′s of thousands of jobs leaving our economy for China.  Now we are seeing even more of our jobs and our technological secrets leaving this country at a time when we should be looking for sweeping reforms and overhaul of a system that is much outdated and geared for the 20th century not the 21st.

IMO that is where this president has failed, he spent his first administration pushing as Social agenda as he was certain that was the mandate of his base as well as the mandate that put him into office.  This was a fatal mistake for the president that will cost him his second term…  He should have focused his attention to our economy and worked to fix that before moving to his social agenda. The social agenda should have been accomplished in his second term…

President Obama so far has only contributed to the economic malaise of this country as via healthcare and EPA actions the president has only made the business environment worse in a time that the country can least afford it.  One thing that people are not talking about so much is the extreme contraction of credit in this country which has a tremendous downward pressure on purchasing power and activity of the American families, before many of us were using credit lines on our homes, carrying many more credit cards than we should, that is mostly gone now as the banks are not extending the credit lines and America families are afraid of their credit cards…  This economy is in for a few more bad years and the president has done nothing to give the private sector any confidence that he can make things better as his solutions are still based in the 20th century policies of FDR….  It is a new world and it is time for our economic and taxing policies to address this fact.

  • Tim Tebow

    I’m worried about you, Monty.

    You wrote:

“UPS and FedEx are doing just fine, right? It’s the Post Office that’s always having problems.” –attempting to make the case for government-run healthcare, while simultaneously undercutting his own argument, Portsmouth, N.H., Aug. 11, 2009″

He was saying that private industry could succeed beside government: UPS and Fed Ex are fine with USPS.

His point was that a government option wouldn’t destroy private health insurance. Government provided health insurance could exist beside private insurance.

Maybe you could take a class on How to Google…

    Happy to help out!

Actually Tim Tebow, as much as I enjoy your football skills and Christian values, you’re wrong. USPS is dying a slow death after being raped by FedEx and UPS year after year. It’s the difference between a for profit system (FedEx, UPS) and a system where the government keeps throwing money at a problem hoping that it will go away (USPS). Even Jon Stewart ridiculed him for it at the time (and for the record, though I am a Tea Party Patriot, I supported Obamacare because I have a chronic disease and being on my parents’ health care til I’m 26 instead of 22 is awesome.)

  • Brincar

  • Tim Tebow

    Bless you, brother Ben!

Tis true that our hallowed Postal Service is dying a sad death, and reform is of paramount importance.

My point was that Obama said that the Postal Service hadn’t put UPS or Fed Ex out of business. UPS and Fed Ex are, of course, doing much better than Postal.

The argument against the so-called ‘public option’ health insurance system was that people would flock to it and put the private insurers out of business. Obama said “No, look at UPS.. they are fine–even though there is a ‘public option’ delivery service.”

I’m glad you will have coverage, brother Ben, and I hope you will consider my view that we need government more than many in the Tea Party are comfortable to admit. Government is the mark of civilization that inspires and enlivens this great land of ours! Without it we are savages, doomed to lives ”nasty, brutish, and short.”

America should be viewed more as a family than a business. This god-made land of ours will only survive if we recognize the limits of competition and embrace a sense of god-borne cooperation!

    Blessings to you, child!

    Brother Timothy

  • Tim Tebow

Jason, my lovely Fox “news” acolyte…

Do you recall that presidential debate in which Obama said he would go into Pakistan and wack Osama if he got the chance? McCain said he wouldn’t talk about it, that he would consult with allies. Remember this?

Do you remember when Bush was asked if he thought about Osama? “Nope, never do.” He said. Obama made it a priority for his administration with drone strikes and other incursions into Pakistan.

The Chief Executive gets credit, and blame, for what happens on his watch. My point was simple and crystal clear.

I forgive your ignorance; you watch Fox “news.”

Yes. The fake debate with fake Hillary. They asked softball questions; one was, are you comfortable enough? The next was, can we get you a pllow? In the moderator, SNL caught the press at its over-the-top chase-the-shiny-novelty thrill-up-my-leg best. They asked Hillary how to explain the mess in the Middle East.

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Franken

Im glad that SNL devoted their season opening skit to the republicans.

All I can say is: Finally! Im so tired of them just mercilessly ridiculing Obama all the time…

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Franken

Fred Armisen plays Obama as the straight man in any sketch and is the single most unfunny character in SNL history.

Whenever they want to tell a joke during an Obama sketch, they either had Andy Samberg play an angry Rahm Emanuel, Kristin Wiig do a crazy-eyed Pelosi, or sometimes they will have Obama crack jokes while giving a speech like a really lame stand up comedian.

SNL has never made fun of Obama or actually told a joke at his expense. Its glaringly obvious that after 3 years they wont either.

Is that biased? Sure. But SNL doesnt need to be fair. Im only offended about all the opportunities for laughs that they have purposefully missed out on due to putting politics ahead of comedy.

By the way, I was thoroughly unimpressed with Alec Baldwin’s Rick Perry impression. The accent was all wrong, and even the hair was off…I thought he’d play Perry with a little more gusto but perhaps Baldwin didnt want to do TOO good of an impression and end up being a reoccurring character which has haunted Tina Fey.

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Franken

“but I’m fairly confident that SNL didn’t have a skit on the executives of Solyndra asserting their 5th Amendment rights when facing Congressional questions about how they lost the $500M tax-payer dollars that was gifted to them by Barack Obama.  Nope, nothing funny about that, I guess. ”

Im on your side on this- however, I think you are setting your sights too high for SNL here.

Its WAAAY too much to ask that they go after Obama to include political scandals like they do republicans…

Instead, I think the whole “if you love me then help me” speech Obama made recently would be perfect to make fun of…especially when the reality is there is zero enthusiasm for his re-election right now.

Perhaps the fact that most democrats right now would give ALOT of thought to voting for Hillary if she were to run…I can see a lot of laughs out of that and the awkward moments an encounter in the white house might be between them….

What annoys me are all the purposefully missed opportunities that SNL has to be not just funny, but relevant…but I guess there is a the reason why SNL doesnt resonate as the comedy gold standard any more.

I just wonder if this is indicative of liberals lacking the ability to laugh at themselves, or are they so worried about Obama that they are afraid to do make any joke that would hurt his chances for re-election?

OMG, that’s fcking hilarious. I can’t stop laughing. Best response EVER.

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Franken

Sorry, but that isnt ridicule of Obama or making a joke at his expense…its making fun of the media.

For example, when SNL makes fun of Bachmann they make fun of HER. There’s a huge difference.

And just the fact that you have to go back to before Obama was elected to dig up an example says everything, doesnt it?

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Franken

First, it was the Chinese leader, not the Japanese…or do all Asians look the same to you?

    http://www.mediaite.com/online/snl-hu-jintao-is-angry-wants-his-money-and-doesnt-look-asian/

Mediaite did a story about this sketch. Funny, they didnt make any reference to the apparent mockery of Obama here. Strange isnt it? I guess if its not obvious, then they didnt do a very good job of making a joke at Obama’s expense, did they?

So please stop trying to argue this point- You are only embarrassing yourself. Its simply ridiculous to say that SNL somehow mocks Obama as much as republicans.

Obama has never been portrayed personally in a negative light on the show. That is FACT.

Any “jokes about” Obama come from misdirections- Look, Rahm Emmanuel gets angry! Pelosi has a crazy look in her eyes! The Chinese Leader (who has a name by the way- Hu Jintao) is mad at the US because we have so much debt!

Its never about Obama the person, which is in stark contrast to how they go after republicans, and especially if you compare the Obama character on SNL with how Bush was portrayed- or even Clinton for that matter.

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Franken

Ive bothered to look. Ive seen every SNL episode. You are flat out, dead wrong. Obama himself has never been “made fun of” on SNL.

I think the disconnect here is what you consider what “making fun” of Obama entails.

I get it though- being that you are liberal and therefore hypersensitive to any criticism, perhaps the mere fact that SNL has Obama as a reoccurring character is what you consider mockery.

The rest of us generally have a different definition of “what making fun of” means, and its best illustrated by answer the question: Is the person is being ridiculed, or just being put in a funny situation?

Obama has NEVER been ridiculed on SNL. The same cannot be said for most republicans.

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Franken

“When has SNL EVER painted Obama as a bumbling buffoon, idiot or moron?  They haven’t.  Ever.”

Maybe that’s due to the fact that Obama ISN’T any of those things. Moron. ”

I call BS on this line of thinking. Since when did it matter if the President was actually as he’s portrayed?

Bush Sr. was a pretty smart guy- that didnt stop Dana Carvey from making him sound like an idiot with his “wouldn’t be prudent” routines.

Also Bill Clinton wasn’t quite the bumbling hick that he was portrayed to be by Phil Hartman either was he?

Yet when it comes to Obama, its hands off.. why?

Obama is either so bland and personally uninteresting that he’s difficult to make fun of, or else there is a concerted effort NOT to make fun of him.

Plus, its not that hard to think of ways SNL could mock Obama if they really wanted to.

Did they ever make fun of him bowing to world leaders?

How about his wave in the photo recently? The “if you love me” speech?

Or maybe this slip of the tongue?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=CTveeRIg2wo

Now you could argue that this was only a momentary lapse..thats fine. It was still funny, and also a momentary lapse is exactly what Rick Perry got mocked for. So why does Obama always get a pass?

  • Brincar

  • Colonel Lingus

Uh, perhaps I’m missing something but isn’t this a skit about the republicans debate and not Obama?  And there have been a few skits which don’t paint Obama favorably but maybe you missed those SNL shows when they aired.

  • Colonel Lingus

These republicans do love their multi millionaire candidates don’t they?

  • guest

They don’t paint him as an idiot because HE IS NOT an idiot.  It’s only funny if it’s true, and it isn’t.

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Franken

“Painting someone unfavorably” and mocking someone with ridicule are two different things.

For example, consider these to “jokes” SNL made, back to back on Saturday’s weekend update:

“WEEKEND UPDATE” ANCHOR SETH MEYERS – “President Obama on Monday defended his new proposed tax rate for millionaires saying “This is not class warfare, it’s math.” Which is unfortunate since America is way better at warfare than math.”

MEYERS – “During a speech in New York on Tuesday, Governor Rick Perry criticized President Obama’s stance toward Israel calling it “naïve, arrogant, misguided and dangerous.” Which is odd because I thought that was Perry’s campaign slogan.”http://www.nbcumv.com/mediavillage/networks/nbcentertainment/pressreleases?pr=contents/press-releases/2011/09/26/quotablesfromsa1317057542031.xml

How could any reasonable person say that SNL was making fun of Obama there? Yet that second “joke” was a pretty clear attack on Perry.

Now its your turn…Ive shown you my proof, now the burden is on you to show yours. Prove me wrong.
Show me specifically where SNL has ridiculed Obama. I want a transcript or a link.

I’d be happy to concede this point to you because that would mean SNL is taking the same shots at Obama, which would be great. Its too bad they aren’t, and its too bad that Im right.

The funny people? Wait, are we still talking about SNL?
