The View‘s Joy Behar: ‘I’m Sure People In Concentration Camps Made Jokes About Each Other And The Nazis’

Video

“Too soon!” or “Inappropriate!” or “Typical.” are reactions often thrown around when people in the media – like, say, Gilbert Gottfried – make controversial jokes about recent, tragic events. Gottfried, you may recall, was fired from his job voicing the “Aflac duck” after he took to Twitter to make a string of jokes about the ongoing series of disasters in Japan.

Comedien Joan Rivers weighed in on the controversy by defending Gottfried:

Oh come on people-this is just outrageous! Gilbert Gottfried was FIRED from Aflac for making jokes about the tsunami in Japan.

That’s what comedians do!!! We react to tragedy by making jokes to help people in tough times feel better through laughter.

Gottfried was, needless to say, quite pleased indeed.

The ladies of The View discussed the jokes, with Sherri Shepherd (who has done her fair share of comedic acting) saying that, while she agrees with Rivers’ basic premise, she can’t see how Gottfried’s particular jokes were helping to make anyone connected to the tragedy feel better.

Joy Behar then chimed in with… this:

I don’t know, maybe people who just need relief from the terror of it all. I don’t know, but I mean, I’m sure people in concentration camps made jokes about each other, about the Nazis, about their situation. That’s the way people relieve stress.

Shepherd explained that there’s a difference between someone cracking jokes from outside of a situation and those experiencing it using humor to get by.

After all – We’re pretty sure Nazi guards made plenty of jokes during the Holocaust, maybe even jokes similar to a victim of the Holocaust or to Jewish comedians commenting on it today. The end result? Slightly different.

Whether or not Gottfried’s jokes were funny is not the point – that’s an entirely subjective assessment, after all. The point that Behar’s comments bring up, specifically, is that it is one thing when someone in a position of relative power – sitting comfortably behind a computer in a well-lit room, not having to wonder whether he’ll ever see his missing friends or family members – makes a joke at the expense of those who are vulnerable and, in some cases, literally on the brink of death. And it’s an entirely different thing to use humor, even the darkest humor, to get through a situation as the impacted, vulnerable party. To compare a joke made by a comedian on Twitter to jokes made by victims of an atrocity or disaster shows what we’re going to hope is willfull ignorance on Behar’s part.

Hogan’s Heroes would be politically incorrect these days…

If Gottfried was a conservative we would be hearing an entirely different story from her. It is always an excuse for Behar when the looney left like herself has a bad joke to crack!

  • timzank

Gilbert Gottfried was fired for doing something his employer didn’t like. Period. Big deal, it happens worldwide everyday. Ultimately everybody has a boss Gilbert, move on.

  • Raygun

She’s right. Do Soldiers not make jokes when they’re in a war just to keep their head straight?

Gottfried is politically apathetic. The left for the most part doesn’t like such jokes because they believe in political correctness, so if anything she’s going against the left.

I would hope that is true.

Liberals that live in glass houses….

Behar is ridiculous. A politically correct yahoo who walks off the stage, along with Goldberg, at Bill O’Reilly when he makes a pretty non-controversial statement about Muslims.

She is also someone overflowing with faux outrage if someone uses the term socialist to describe the president. She’s part of the Liberal word police, that deconstructs words uttered by conservatives and assigns tags like “racist” and “sexist”.

She ought to play by her own rules and go on an apology tour…

  • Pablo

Behar had an “Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while” moment. She’s still an idiot, but she’s right on this one.

Ever read “This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen”? An account of concentration camp life that supports your point. Life goes on.

  • Jelperman

Behar is right. Magda Ross of the Simon Wiesenthal Center said the same thing back when concern trolls got their panties in a bunch about the movie “Life is Beautiful”.

And she would know since she was a survivor of the Nazi holocaust.

A contrast on Joy Behar comments…

Today – A Jewish insult comic makes light of the ongoing deaths of thousands –

“I don’t know, maybe people who just need relief from the terror of it all. I don’t know, but I mean, I’m sure people in concentration camps made jokes about each other, about the Nazis, about their situation. That’s the way people relieve stress.”

Just yesterday – Glenn Beck says in light of the tragedy maybe Christian folk should abide by the tenets of their religion –

“How about: ‘Thou shalt not advance your career on the back of the Japanese people right now?’”

Obviously, there’s no standard by which comments issued by Behar are to be judged aside from on whom it is she’s commenting. Intellectual honesty be damned. It’s entirely identity driven and not merit-based. Someone with whom she shares a religion, profession and/or ideology will be defended; anyone with whom she doesn’t will be criticized. The substance of that on which she’s commenting, a calculatingly heartless joke or a benign plea to be better people, is immaterial. A defense WILL be made if she likes the person who made some comment, regardless of the substantive vacuousness of the defense. An attack WILL be made if she doesn’t like the person who made some other comment, regardless of the disingenuous nature of the attack.

So, no surprise; nothing to see here but the same old worn out hypocrisies and double standards.

There is a term you should become familiar with before you folks get your panties too tight.
It’s called “gallows humor”. There are books written about it. Grow up.

You see, it’s called hypocrisy, Joseph. Conservatives aren’t part of the sensitivity-class Word Police. Behar is.

You know, like when a “social” conservative with family values turns out to be either gay or a cheater?

Or when tax-the-rich liberals get caught cheating on taxes like John Kerry, Alec Baldwin, or Barbara Streisand.

People who are so busy telling others how to live are usually the people who need to shut up and mind their own behavior. Behar is the woman who asked if it was racist to use the term “Black Friday”. Like I said in my other post, I hope she goes on an apology tour and attends sensitivity training .

  • LOGICandREASON

Joy Behar is despicable! I cannot imagine that a human being thinks that other innocent humans who went through this ordeal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WAVoaRSBaw would have made JOKES about themselves and the NAZI regime that inflicted them with such suffering and painful death eventually.

I would love to see outrage from the Anti-Defamation League over this one. Where is the Jewish community’s reaction over Behar statement??

How is Glenn Beck’s statement on Reform Judaism worse than making fun of the Holocaust?

It begs the question: What does Joy Behar really understand about the HOLOCAUST and extermination(by starvation, torture and poisonous gas) of Jews, Polish and the Gypsies?

How is it fun by any means to be deprived of food, appropriate clothing and shelter for even just 48 hours?

I don’t know how folks like Joy Behar get jobs on TV and actually become phenomenal personalities; it shows how sick this world has become.

Gallows humor is reserved for those on the gallows. The middle aged, parasol totting housewife using her four children as a wedge to get at the front of a crowd tittering with excitement over the impending hangin’ doesn’t participate in gallows humor.

Brilliant analogy there “Joy”. I didn’t know that Gilbert Gottfried was Japanese, and that he survived a tsunami which wiped out his entire city. Double bonus for bringing up a Nazi reference which has absolutely no logical relationship to the tragic events in Japan. It’s sad that this show full of yammering idiots actually has an audience. You could put the cast of Jersey Shore in the same format and they’d make as much sense.

    Dictionary.com said:
    gallows humor
    –noun
humor that treats serious, frightening, or painful subject matter in a light or satirical way.

It’s self evident. Gottfried wasn’t treating the matter in a light or satirical way in spiritual harmony with those who were the subject of his jest. He was cracking mean-spirited jokes to extend his brand as a callous insult comic. His approach to the topic was one purely as a source of entertainment – the woman in the crowd – and not to help people – the man about to be hung or those emotionally close to him – deal with serious, frightening or painful consequences.

The firing and official apology ought to have illuminated this all for you already.

  • TristramShandy

OxyCon’s assessment beat me to it… “It’s sad that a show of yammering idiots actually has an audience.” I have to remember that one.

I generally find Mediaite a decent site with many good video clips to enjoy.

But I must say that Alex Alvarez’ article is surprisingly poorly written and difficult to follow what points he is trying to make.

I;m afraid I would have to give a C minus … primely for its lack of clarity.

Perhaps the most egregious example of what I am criticizing is the paragraph.

“After all – We’re pretty sure Nazi guards made plenty of jokes during the Holocaust, maybe even jokes similar to a victim of the Holocaust or to Jewish comedians commenting on it today. The end result? Slightly different.”

Yeah, and if someone on the right said this, you’d have your panties in a bunch for sure, hypocrite. Did you and Behar go to the same finishing school for big-mouthed oafs?

  • turk281

Do you work for Entertainment Weekly? Or are you a teacher? What’s up with the C minus?

If you read the paragraph that preceded the one you cited, it’s not hard to follow at all:

“Shepherd explained that there’s a difference between someone cracking jokes from outside of a situation and those experiencing it using humor to get by. ”

What do you grade Behar’s stupid statement?

I’m not trying to bust your chops, but I think you meant to type primarily. Primely is defined as:

    primely (prīm′lē)

    adverb(rare)
    very well; excellently

I didn’t know that was a word but it is listed as a rare adverb. I give you an A for maybe helping me win my next scrabble game.

    Also, Alex is a she.

  • BatBoy

“Your actions have consequences” – a concept we teach our kids, but is not understood by the Hollywood looney tunes.

    Good post, Alex.

Joy will go to any length to defend her buds, or Lefties. I’m sure we don’t need to say “imagine if *insert any conservative* said this”. We all know what Joy’s reaction would have been.

“Shepherd explained that there’s a difference between someone cracking jokes from outside of a situation and those experiencing it using humor to get by.” – I’m actually surprised Sherri made such a valid point….

Seems the only view on the View, by 4 of the 5 guests, are so moronic there laughable. Whoopie chooses to defend a director who raped and sodomized a child (she’s probably looking for job), and Behar will defend any comic no matter how reprehensible their material is because, she thinks comedy should be able to cross any line no matter who it hurts simply because the attack is put is a comical way. That’s the ridiculous thinking these people put forward to cover their deplorable defense of comedy. Why Baba-Wawa hasn’t fired these two pitiful ingrates is puzzling.

You want a really GOOD laugh? Check out Behar’s ratings here:

    http://www.mediaite.com/tv/cnn-dominates-friday-night-ratings-with-quake-coverage-msnbc-skips-story-loses-viewers/

Just BARELY gets more viewers than Showbiz Tonight. LOL… Now that, my friends, is a REAL joke; and a hilarious one at that!

What makes Behar so sure? Does she have any evidence?

If Mediaite had an EDIT button (or better yet used DISQUS), I think we’d all be better off – especially old codgers like myself who tend to be easily distracted by watching TV while we type away.
