Thursday’s Google/Fox News Republican Debate Is The Highest Rated Debate Of 2012 Cycle

It appears the hunger for presidential debates in America is only growing as the networks put on more of such events. Despite being the third debate in the same number of weeks, the Fox News/Google-organized debate last Thursday night clocked in as the most-watched debate on television of the 2012 cycle, and netted Fox News its high-rated primetime hour this year.

With nearly two million viewers in the 25-54 age demographic and six million total (not counting internet livestreams) according to Nielsen, the Fox News/Google debate last Thursday was the highest-rated primetime block for Fox News this year, and the debate itself the highest-rated of the 2012 debate cycle. It also put a dent in network television ratings, trouncing half of NBC’s primetime lineup as well.

For those keeping score, the Fox News debate managed to be the highest-rated among the six debates in this cycle, beginning last June. Yes, that is far more than one debate per month– meaning Americans seem to be showing no signs of election fatigue despite facing the candidates 14 months before the election. What this means for the immediate future? More and more debates, perhaps in new formats and introducing new characters. The next debate is scheduled for October 11th and hosted by Bloomberg– only the first of two debates scheduled for October.

Admit it MSNBC, CNN, Current, ABC, CBS, NBC …. you don’t like FOX News because they own you in the ratings….

I don’t think it’s a mystery.   Put a conservative debate on a conservative channel and it gets high ratings.   It’s like shooting fish in a barrel.

My problem with these candidates is that none of them is making a persuasive, cohesive argument for conservative governance.

As a Democrat, I’ll readily acknowledge that I’m predisposed not to agree with them…..but I can at least acknowledge when someone is making a strong case for themselves.  And these candidates aren’t doing that.

All they’ve done so far is outline a series of opportunistic policy positions just show that they oppose Obama.  (Even if some of Obama’s positions are basically the same as past Republican plans).

But they’re not making a persuasive argument about why a conservative approach to government would truly be better.

The Republican Party is making some of the same mistakes that Democrats made in 2004.

Like the Democrats in ’04, the Republicans hate the current president so much that they’re falling over themselves to be in opposition to him.

But at the same time, they’re not making a strong case for why their path is any better.

I think Rick Perry is basically the Howard Dean of the GOP.   And Romney is John Kerry.  But both are destined to lose unless they can really make the case.

I suspect liberals generally prefer print and internet news over TV.

Ratings for the debate are the same as all the other programming, sitting alone at the top.

A place where MSNBC and CNN only wish they could be.

  • http://mediamatters.org/ Leedog

Highest rated?? Which means more people then ever saw that ”Scary Perry” will get his A$$ handed to him when he debates Obama!!

Being an ignorant Republicon might do well debating other ignorant Republicons but will fail when going up against the intelligence of Obama!!

  • Re-Elect Obama 2012

High ratings means lot of Republicans saw what a freaking embarrassment Rick Perry was to this group of also-rans.

High ratings because more people expected a relevant and honest debate format and post debate  analysis instead of the gotcha questions and post-debate hatefest guaranteed from other outlets. If there’s a primary challenger for all-drama Obama you’ll see high rating there too for the same reasons, except the latter being a non-lovefest.

you might want to recheck that 18-54 bracket cause msnbc won that age group according to the same report!

    By a whopping 27,000 ? Big deal….

The only reason people tuned into MSMNB was because it was Perry’s first debate.

Prob mostly progressives like myself who had a helluva time making fun of the racist and homophobic baggers.  BTW, anybody google Santorum recently?

  • Anonymous

Your last statement works for me.

  • Anonymous

Intelligence of obama?? OMG!! He can’t complete a sentence w/o a teleprompter. obama intelligent! LOL
    Fred Flintstone could debate him.

  • Katty

I guess what you are trying to say is, at least this time around, there are more conservatives than liberals, therefore the ratings are no surprise…wonder why they watch conservative TV - for the truth maybe?

  • Anonymous

    lol, grasping at straws much?

From your point of view, all the other news outlets are liberal right.. and there is only one conservative channel.. so naturally it must mean that conservatives are in the minority, that’s why they get their own channel.

Fox News is sort of like BET, it caters specifically to conservatives instead though.

  • caconservative

But, unlike BET it doesn’t have to rely on government handouts to stay in business.

  • caconservative

It won’t be the illegal alien, butt-kissing Perry debating Obimbo, in fact, if things get mush worse it might not be Obimbo debating anyone because he might be gone. It could very well by Mrs.Clinton or some other ditsy Liberal debating the Republican candidate. Truth is, Independents don’t like socialists, and right now, the Democratic Party represents socialism. The 2012 elections will only be a formality in riding ourselves of the man-child, and replacing him with an adult.

  • caconservative

We’re simply weeding out the culls. Maybe that’s what the Liberals should have done and we wouldn’t be in this mess!

  • caconservative

Could you please write a coherent sentence! Those of us who don’t understand Liberal-Latin sometimes get confused by your lack of proper diction. One of the first rules of argumentation is making yourself understood.

  • Glutton

He’s not making an argument.  He’s just asking if anyone has Googled “santorum” lately.

  • caconservative

    Thanks for the translation.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, we get the joke already. Ha, ha, you’re hilarious!

If Obama’s so smart, how come he keeps falling in the polls?

    Putin?

  • Anonymous

Don’t you ever run out of stupid things to say?

  • http://mediamatters.org/ Leedog

Republicons are destroying the economy like they promised they would do!! Unfortunately, the President will take the blame because he is the leader of the country!!

Just like most people still blame Bush for the 2008 collapse of the economy or not stopping the 9/11 attacks… he was President at the time!!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PKEQSTA4WOBYU5Z7QNSBUR2LXI MASSMURDERMEDIA

    yes…  vladimir putin…  he’s bringing back sexy…

  • Glutton

If Putin comes back, I’m really wishing Hillary were the president.  Obama, Parry, Romney, Palin just won’t cut it.  America is done.

Highest rated debate? Too bad for Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann.  All those people saw them fail.

All of the debates will be a waste of time for all of the candidates if Christie come on board.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tony.westover Tony Westover

HA! I just find it amusing that NBC sucks so much now that their network television can’t even beat Fox News Channel.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SIYF5565LXG7BBKTKGSSFWU7TA The Rock

Your claim is a lie without facts or proof that is only one night overall for a debate I don’t put much into it Network TV beats cable news a lot so have facts to back your claim which you clearly don’t your a liar.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SIYF5565LXG7BBKTKGSSFWU7TA The Rock

Debates are boring thats why i don’t watch them much because it’s just rehashing there talking points is all plus I can just get hilights and clips on Fox News without listening to debates. And I already know who i will be voting for in Primary anyways Mitt Romney.
