President Donald Trump’s prime-time address on election fraud ignited furious backlash and condemnation from Democratic lawmakers Thursday night, who accused him of laying the groundwork to challenge the legitimacy of the 2026 midterm elections.

Speaking from the White House, Trump argued that the election system remains vulnerable to foreign interference and again pressed Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, legislation that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote, mandate photo identification at the ballot box, and restrict mail-in voting.

Leading the charge, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer accused the president of trying to “lay the groundwork to rig the 2026 elections and undermine democracy,” while arguing Trump continues to deny his 2020 defeat to former President Joe Biden.

“The American people were fed up with Donald Trump then and they’re even more fed up with him now as he sends costs skyrocketing, brings chaos to their streets, and enriches his friends and family through rampant corruption,” Schumer said, adding that the SAVE America Act “isn’t going anywhere. Period.”

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries called Trump “a feeble, unhinged conspiracy-peddling 80-year old failed President.”

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) bluntly panned Trump as a “loser”:

Meanwhile, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) ripped the president for being focused on “spewing” old “lies” instead of improving the economy:

Other elected Democrats piled on:

Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) called for impeachment:

California Governor Gavin Newsom was equally scathing, describing Trump’s address as “the ramblings of a mad king” but going one step further by calling it “a legitimate 25th Amendment moment”:

He was not alone, joined by Rep. Yass Ansari (D–AZ):

California state senator Scott Weiner declared “25th Amendment or prison”:

The proposal has become a central priority for House Republicans. Earlier Thursday, House Speaker Mike Johnson described the SAVE America Act as the GOP’s “top legislative priority,” though he did not immediately comment on Trump’s speech itself.

However, several MAGA Republicans quickly echoed the president’s message.

Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) argued that “American elections should not be less secure than Olive Garden’s endless pasta,” adding that it was “more important than ever to crush foreign election interference” and urging passage of the legislation.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) called for Chinese student visas to be revoked:

CIA Director John Ratcliffe also defended Trump’s claims, saying he had “long publicly highlighted China’s nefarious efforts to influence the 2020 election against President Trump, as evidenced by my dissent to the flawed January 2021 Intelligence Community Assessment.”

Ratcliffe added that newly declassified documents “shed further light on China’s intentions” and “deserve public scrutiny to ensure our democracy’s foundation – the security and public confidence in our elections – is unassailable.”
