What Does Rush Limbaugh Look For In Miss America?

video

Rush Limbaugh was a judge for the Miss America Pageant Saturday evening, looking rather dapper in a tuxedo as he sat in judgment of a map’s worth of young lovelies vying for the crown. When asked by co-host Gretchen Carlson — yes, that Gretchen Carlson, she of Fox & Friends but also of the 1989 Miss America Crown — what he looked for in a Miss America, he said “poise, confidence, articulation — and she must like herself.” I think by “articulation” he meant that she should be articulate, but ironically that’s actually not what that word means. Awkward. More awkward: That whole “liking herself” thing. Sorry, but after Carrie Prejean, hoping a pageant contestant will “like herself” sounds sorta creepy.

I don’t mean to rag on Rush, he gives good TV even if he’s a little off on the vocab, and the crowd seemed to like him, cheering even louder for him than Shawn Johnson and Vivaca Fox (Gawker’s Matt Cherette caught a few boos), but Limbaugh was clearly off the cheer-o-meter as far as our video clip goes. Also, he’s a good sport: He gamely shook his booty to Lady Gaga‘s “Poker Face” in the pre-show, getting down so much so that he elicited a genuine “Give it up for Rush Limbaugh!” He was clearly not bluffin’ with his muffin. Even if his oration could use a little articulation.

I’m not crazy, I promise! I heard the boos more on my TV than on the video I clipped, but you can still notice them lingering when the cheers die down–right as/after he says “How you doing, Gretchen?”

  • puck30

Really Matt? okay whatever floats your boat. Was it the whole crowd? Was it half the crowd? Was it ten people who happen to be next to an open mic? Were they just booing or were they yelling words like druggie, fat slob, homophobe, have another heart attack jack***?

I’m sure if you watch Olbermann Monday night he will play a clip that just has booing in it, and maybe Keith will point out those racist ‘Code Words’ that Rush speaks. Because they did sit Rush next to Vivaca A. Fox.

    Set your tivo.

  • puck30

Rachel, that was a pretty balanced piece you put together. I didn’t watch all of it. Saturday Night means ‘Hockey Night In Canada’.

  • same2u

Rachel, Do you honestly care whether a Mark Koldys groupie and Ditto-head thinks an article authored by you about the Pigman is “pretty balanced “?

Some people have an elevated view of the value of their own opinions.

  • sarainitaly

    You linked to this:

    articulation
3 a : the act of giving utterance or expression b : the act or manner of articulating sounds c : an articulated utterance or sound; specifically : consonant

    and it links to:

    articulate
1 a : to give clear and effective utterance to : put into words b : to utter distinctly c : to give definition to (as a shape or object) d : to give shape or expression to (as a theme or concept)

    Doesn’t that define his usage?

Wow, Rush got a HUGE cheer from the crowd. I think it is an important quality that women like themselves, and pleased he said it. It is a positive message for young women.

I’m still waiting for someone to call him racist, since an African American girl won, and he said she must be articulate….

  • sarainitaly

    I don’t know why that hyperlinked…

“I don’t mean to rag on Rush,”

    You lie.

  • TinaFromTampa

    The audacity of Miss Alaska!
Was she trying to impugn the intelligence of the former Mayor of Wasilla?
And why are there 53 contestants in this competition?
It is clearly a sign that they are bowing to the pro-Obama agenda… quietly trying to work their way up to 57 states.

Why would your opinion carry more weight than theirs? Are you someone important we haven’t been made aware of? The whole purpose of a blog is to comment, correct?

Please, please tell us how important you and your opinions are.

  • same2u

Mediaite or any other blog doesn’t owe you Koldys kiddies coverage of Rush Limbaugh, Fox News or any other media organization a “presentation” that meets your twisted interpretation of “balanced”.

I wonder if Rachel is a parent or has a daughter. Rachel, I’m starting to wonder if you’re an ideologue. Rush says “like yourself” and you found that an important take away to write in your article as sounding sorta creepy.

I say it’s sorta creepy that you leaped/stretched (spent time to think of it or it just came to your mind quickly) to connect “like herself” to connect with Carrie Prejean. Are you anti-Miss America pageant or don’t like young woman “liking themselves”?

More sorta creepy than Rush’s use of “articulation” and his booty shake as you described it. That dance was bad enough, but your sorta creepy exceeded that.

This is what happens when you let children like Matt Cherette near a computer – they cobble together a bunch of lies and embellishments. There was HARDLY any booing in the crowd, and the cheers for Rush were CONSIDERABLY louder than they were for anyone else – even many of the contestants!

And for the record, I don’t even care much for Rush…but come on….let’s try to be fair here.

  • same2u

    Yeah liberalontogeny,

It takes a parent to appreciate that the drug-addled , viagra popping sleazeball like Rush Limbaugh is a wholesome values voter with only a history of favorable comments about women.

In case you need a refresher as to why many women think Rush Limbaugh is a disgusting animal here is a link for you:

“It takes a parent to appreciate that the drug-addled , viagra popping sleazeball like Rush Limbaugh is a wholesome values voter with only a history of favorable comments about women.”

If the country can elect a pot and coke head as president, what’s a little viagra?

  • liberalontogeny

    same2u

I didn’t say Rush is wholesome. In fact, look around. I’ve stated Rush does more harm than good. My post is about Rachel (not Rush) connecting “like herself” to Prejean.

Take Rachel’s tweet – “…and also that she (Rush stated) “like herself.” Really, after Carrie Prejean that has a WHOLE other meaning”.

Rachel connected “like herself” to Prejean. Not Rush

  • J Baustian

    articulation
    noun
    1. the action of putting into words an idea or feeling
    2. the formation of clear and distinct sounds in speech
    3. in phonetics, the act or manner of uttering a speech sound

Seems to me that Rush used the word correctly — presumably he was selected as a judge because of his communications skills and he clearly stated that he was looking for contestants who could communicate effectively. I did not watch any of the pageant, so I cannot say whether the winner or other top finishers met this standard.

People with limited vocabularies might want to consult a dictionary before they criticize other’s word choices.

  • Ted

sarainitaly – yes, but you conveniently forgot drug addled and sleezeball (any question about that?). Limbaugh is an addict. And by the way if you know anything about addiction, you know in his case that means ALL drugs. Alcohol is a drug (just fyi) and he says he continues to partake in such…he’s got problems.

  • Ted

And by problems I mean those that go beyond being an asshole.

  • same2u

Sara, beyond stupid to compare youthful indiscretions with middle age indiscretions.

  • JimW

Oh, Ted… My name is Jim and I’m an alcoholic. I’ve been clean and sober for too many years to diagnose any other person as an addict or alcoholic. If you know anything about recovery or addiction, you must know that you can’t speak for someone else. Hugs!

  • Ted

HI JIM…then you know as a matter of fact that a person addicted to pain pills should lay off alcohol. You do know that don’t you? Big kiss.

  • dregs

Um…he used the word “articulation” correctly, which you could see if your read the third definition at the link you provided.

  • Facebook User

I have no idea what the hell Sara is talking about she is the typical conservative parrot, calling Obama a coke head is laughable what about W. what about McCain and what he did to his first wife, lets talk about that. You Sara need to get off your high horse realize that Obama was elected by the peolple and If you dont like it move. Getting assinine people like you and the bunch and Mark Koldys playpen out of this country would make this a much better place to live. Geez lady get you head out of you ass.

Beyond pathetic and disgusting of you to attack someone who developed an addiction to pain medications – something that hundreds of thousands of Americans struggle with.

Limbaugh is a recovering addict to prescription pain pills.

I was talking about the idiocy of attacking someone who developed an addiction to pain medication, something that hundreds of thousands of people suffer from. i was pointing out how ridiculous it is to attack someone who has made mistakes in their past . Perhaps if you weren’t such a liberal parrot, and pulled your own head out of your buttocks, you would have realized that.

    Way to go Jim! :O)

  • Ted

sarainitally – Jim W has exactly wrong and he knows it. Sometimes you are as dumb as tree stump. You’ve stuck your foot in your yapper and you don’t even know it.

  • Cecelia

Actually, Ted, Jim W is not wrong and neither is sarainitaly.

It’s not like you are expressing any real concern that Limbaugh may relapse on pills if he drinks alcohol.

And the way one does reply to people whose warnings about another person’s potential downfall, reveal nothing but pre-game schadenfreude, IS to essentially say– mind your own business and tend to your own garden.

Sara and Jim are on the money.

  • Media Me

Cecelia, go on back to J$’s and polish up the diamonds on your kneepads. Your lord and master is waiting.

Ummm, I was saying *way to go Jim* for his years of sobriety.

and you are a royal jerk for attacking people who are/have struggled with addictions. I don’t have my foot in my yapper, but i would love to stick my foot “somewhere”.

(and btw, Jim W was spot on. you are wrong. you are just a hater.)

  • sarainitaly

    Ted’s vocabulary:

dumb, stupid, teabagger, hate, dumb, stupid, teabagger *repeat*

    it’s getting soooooo old, ted.

  • Cecelia

Sara, perhaps you’re being too hard on Ted. That list may comprise his entire vocabulary.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Knox/100000675553226 Mike Knox

@same2u : This has got to be ‘articulated’ ; If my dog had a face like yours, I’d shave its ass and teach it to walk backwards.

  • Cecelia

Mike Knox, I’m pretty sure same2u has shaved and is walking backwards.

  • sarainitaly

it’s all he ever does. he doesn’t offer anything, he just runs around calling people stupid. it’s like, ok, if you think i am wrong about something, prove it, debate the issue. he just runs in, takes a verbal dump, and runs out.

  • pyrope

    My sentiments exactly Mike.

  • JimW

Ted, honey, wrong about what? I know people in AA who have become addicted to prescribed narcotics used to control pain. Physical pain is very challenging to deal with and I have nothing but compassion for those who have inadvertently become addicted. Does that make anyone dealing with overdoing prescribed medication an addict? I don’t know. People have to deal with that question themselves. You should be a little more compassionate and, like Sara says, try to expand your vocabulary. And then again, you are perfect exactly the way you are.

I think Rush should have followed Perez Hilton’s lead when judging a beauty contest. Ask the contestant a politically charged question, then spend the next week calling her a bitch and ridiculing her if she disagrees with you.

In other words, what he does on his radio show ever day?

  • writer

I wasn’t aware his radio show kept a woman from winning a contest. Politics should play no role in determining whether a woman deserves to win, and the judge should keep his politics out of it. But since you libs are so set against sexism, I’m sure you agree that Perez Hilton was out of line. (I understand that you can’t admit it out loud, since any criticism of a gay person would be politically incorrect.)
