WATCH: The Daily Show’s Jordan Klepper Brutally Stumps Anti-Mask Parents at North Carolina Protest

The Daily Show’s Jordan Klepper faced off with anti-mask parents at a recent North Carolina protest to try and figure out why so many think “putting on a piece of cloth is just too much.”

In an effort to discover why some parents were so upset by the idea of their children wearing masks to prevent the spread of Covid-19, Klepper attended an anti-mask protest outside of the Johnston County school system’s headquarters in Smithfield.

The protest occurred ahead of a vote to decide whether or not to continue the school’s mask policy, despite the fact that North Carolina is seeing a rise in Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about a third of North Carolina’s recent cases are among children under 17-years-old.

Klepper confronted several attendees at the protest, including a mother who wore an “I don’t co-parent with the government” T-shirt, who told The Daily Show correspondent that “masks don’t work” and have only managed to make her child suffer by giving him acne.

“Has he had Covid?” Klepper asked.

“No,” she replied.

Another attendee took issue with having to “smell that funk” while breathing and another labeled the inability to see the facial expressions of others as “a sign of slavery.”

The “smell that funk” protester also claimed that while wearing a mask “you’re breathing in the toxins that your body is trying to get rid of,” which prompted Klepper to ask how surgeons have managed to wear masks all day.

“That is a good question,” the protester replied.

Klepper, noting that the rally also featured signs against teaching critical race theory in school, went on to characterize the protest as a “general airing of grievances.”
