Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Effort to Oust Speaker Johnson Goes Down in Flames

The House of Representatives voted to table Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) resolution to oust Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

Greene’s measure was killed by a vote tally of 359-43.

The Georgia Republican filed a motion to vacate the chair in March, but only pushed for a vote on Wednesday. She has been critical of Johnson after he ushered through multiple short-term funding bills to keep the government open, as well as foreign aid packages that Greene opposes.

“The resolution is as follows,” she said on the House floor while introducing her resolution. “Declaring the office of speaker of the House of Representatives to be vacant–”

Her speech was interrupted by boos raining down upon her. Greene responded by derisively accusing her detractors of belonging to the “uniparty.”

That comment prompted more booing.

Given the lopsided vote, it is clear there was little appetite for a repeat of the speakership drama that roiled the House for three weeks in October. Then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was removed from his position after Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) filed a motion to vacate that was ultimately adopted. It took the House three weeks to replace him, as several candidates for speaker were nominated, but were voted down or withdrew their candidacy because it became evident they did not have enough support.
