HUH?! Trump VP Hopeful Doug Burgum Tells NBC’s Welker There Was a ‘Smooth Transition’ After Trump’s First Term

Governor Doug Burgum (R-ND) — a top contender to be selected as former President Donald Trump’s running mate — got NBC’s Kristen Welker to do a double take with a truly head-scratching comment Sunday.

In a bizarre moment on Meet the Press, the North Dakota governor delivered an assessment about the transition of power following Trump’s first term that seemed completely detached from reality.

“Donald Trump, at the end of his term on January 20th, left the White House,” Burgum said. “We had a smooth transition.”

Visibly perplexed, Welker interjected immediately — taking issue with the governor’s remark.

“January 6th wasn’t exactly a smooth transition, Governor,” Welker said.

But the North Dakota governor – who is the current favorite to be Trump’s no. 2 according to the major prediction market PredictIt — refused to yield,

“Well, I think we have to say that there was a smooth transition,” Burgum said. “And everybody in both parties is going to challenge elections if they don’t think they’re fair. And we don’t have one election in America. There’s over 3,100 counties, and each of those counties sometimes have different rules. And in 2020, of course, with Covid, there was a myriad set of new rules and regulations that we had never seen before. And so, of course, going into 2024, I think both parties are going to be very focused on it.”

Throughout the process, numerous Trump VP contenders have made outlandish statements on his behalf. With the race in the closing stages ahead of the Republican National Convention in mid-July — Burgum, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), who are the three reported finalists, have all gone to great lengths to defend Trump in recent Sunday show interviews. Of course, all three, in the past, have been vocal critics of former President Trump.
