MAGA Favorite Sydney Sweeney’s New Movie Absolutely Bombs at the Box Office
MAGA favorite Sydney Sweeney had a feeble opening weekend at the box office for her inspirational boxing film, “Christy.”
The film was released in just over 2,000 theaters nationwide, according to The Wrap, and grossed only $1.3 million “for a per-theater average of just $649.”
That puts it among the top 10 worst openings for a new release, Box Office Mojo reported, adding that “three of the films below it” were “released during the pandemic period from April 2020 to May 2021.”
In the film, Sweeney stars as as domestic abuse survivor and pro boxer Christy Martin, who won the first women’s boxing pay-per-view main event. In 2010, Martin survived a murder attempt by her former coach-turned-husband.
Sweeney reported that she gained 34 pounds in order to develop a boxer’s physique for the role.
The actress came to MAGA’s attention when she posed for an American Eagle jeans ad that touted her “good genes” in a play on words that outraged some on the far-left over notions of white “genetic superiority.”
After conservative pundits played up the left’s disapproval, it came to light that Sweeney is a registered Republican, although she hasn’t said whether she supports Donald Trump.
When a reporter informed the president of Sweeney’s political affiliation, Trump did not try to hide his delight.
“Oh, now I love her ad!” Trump joked. “Is that right? Is Sydney Sweeney? You’d be surprised at how many people are Republicans. That’s one I wouldn’t have known, but I’m glad you told me that…If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.”
Fox News reported that Sweeney fans now want her to run for office, with MAGA podcaster Benny Johnson telling Fox News’s Jesse Watters, “She put the final nail in the coffin of woke. People aren’t doing this anymore…and that’s why people are tweeting today, Jesse, Vance-Sweeney 2028.”
“I would love it!” Watters exclaimed.
