‘Major Mistake!’ MS NOW Panel Warns Democrats Not to Impeach Trump if They Win House

Attempting to impeach President Donald Trump for a third time would be a “major mistake,” agreed Democratic strategist Adrienne Elrod and former Governor of Ohio John Kasich on MS NOW Thursday.

Elrod and Kasich joined host Katy Tur to discuss this year’s midterms.

Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries will be “faced with” the question of impeaching Trump if Democrats win the House in November, Tur noted. She then asked Elrod what Dems should do.

“I think that impeaching Trump is a bad idea, and I think Leader Jeffries is doing exactly what he should be doing, which is to sort of steady the course,” Elrod said.

She added:

We saw this happen in the first administration. It is a distraction to a lot of the American people who will vote for Democrats this cycle, because they’re concerned about affordability. They’re concerned about high prices. They will think, and the Trump administration will use this very effectively, they will think these same voters who took a chance on Democrats and flipped and voted for us this cycle will think, “Oh, Democrats don’t care” about their issues because they’re so focused on impeaching Trump. And of course, the votes are not there. I mean, the votes may be there to impeach, but not enough to remove him from office.

Kasich agreed. He said, “I completely agree with her, right, and I think investigations are going to be part of it. But they also have to address these issues of affordability. And I think, Katie, the number one issue of affordability everybody is worried about is health care, and I would expect that they’re going to … renew those subsidies for health care to bring the cost of those premiums down.”

He also said:

Maybe they’ll even come out with some ideas about a comprehensive immigration bill, which people I think would welcome. And then I think also they have an opportunity to do something with Republicans if they are willing to try to begin to seize power back from the Executive Branch and restore it to the Legislative Branch. So I think right now they talk impeachment because they want to keep the fundraising going. But at the end, I think it would be a major mistake.
