MS NOW Anchor Reveals ChatGPT’s Creepy Response to AI Hacking Story

MS NOW anchor Katy Tur asked ChatGPT about the recent news of an “unprecedented” incident involving two artificial intelligence platforms — and didn’t like what she heard.

Speaking on The Moment with Katy Tur Friday, the anchor described the details of the hacking, which came to light after ChatGPT maker OpenAI acknowledged some of its systems had escaped a testing environment and went after a different AI company, a New York-based startup called Hugging Face.

Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue called the frightening episode “an attack unlike anything we’ve ever seen before,” according to the Associated Press.

Tur acknowledged she was freaked out by the incident.

“Still don’t know why it’s called ‘Hugging Face,'” Tur quipped as she reported the story.

Then she revealed she asked ChatGPT about the incident, and got an unsettling response from the AI platform:

It did it all on its own. Both companies say they are investigating, but as you can imagine, news of AI jumping ship is freaking a lot of people out. Read: me.

Last month, President [Donald] Trump signed an executive order asking tech companies to voluntarily give the government oversight of new AI models before releasing them to the public, and a bipartisan House bill introduced yesterday called the AI Kill Switch Act, would give the Department of Homeland Security authority to order firms to slow or shut down an AI system that could cause catastrophic harm.

Which sounds like a good idea, especially after I got this patronizing response from ChatGPT when I asked it about what happened.

It warned me to be careful in how I describe the hack. The AI, it said didn’t want freedom. Rather, they exploited vulnerabilities in their environment because doing so advanced the objective they were optimizing for.

Silly me.
