Senior House Dem Tells Axios Post-Shooting: ‘We’ve All Resigned Ourselves to a Second Trump Presidency’

A leading House Democrat appears to be throwing in the towel on the 2024 presidential election — following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
An Axios report late Sunday quoted a person identified as a “Senior House Democrat” essentially giving up on the idea that President Joe Biden could beat former President Trump and suggested the rest of the Democratic caucus has done the same.
“We’ve all resigned ourselves to a second Trump presidency,” the senior House Democrat told Axios.
In a post to X/Twitter after the Axios story was published, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) slammed the anonymous Democrat who made the statement.
“If you’re a ‘senior Democrat’ that feels this way, you should absolutely retire and make space for true leadership that refuses to resign themselves to fascism,” she wrote. “This kind of leadership is functionally useless to the American people. Retire.”

The Axios piece quoted the same Senior Democrat, along with a second source it identified as a “Biden-skeptical Democrat.” Both suggested efforts to replace Biden has now been halted. That lines up with reporting from CBS’ Robert Costa — who said Sunday that Democratic critics of Biden are “standing down” after the assassination attempt on Trump.
