President Donald Trump has slapped an additional tariff on India over its Russian oil purchases, raising India’s tariffs to 50% overall.
Trump signed an executive order imposing the new taxes on India on Wednesday, the Associated Press reported.
The tariffs will go into effect in 21 days.
The move comes just days after Trump announced an initial 25% tariff on India, along with an unspecified “penalty,” after complaining about India’s relationship with Russia and about its own tariffs on U.S. goods that were “far too high.”
“Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country,” Trump posted on Truth Social at the time. “Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE — ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!”
It’s the latest salvo in a tense relationship between the U.S. and India.
In May, Trump claimed that he helped broker a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. India later denied Trump’s involvement, saying the two countries worked out a deal directly.
