‘Boom! Victory!’ Larry Sabato Outlines Democrats’ ‘Very Simple Path’ to Win Midterms

Political scientist and election forecaster Larry Sabato dropped the “very simple path” for Democrats to win the midterms, which includes just three items and then, “Boom,” you’ve got “victory.”

Sabato joined MS NOW’s Antonia Hylton, sitting in for host Stephanie Ruhle on Money, Power, Politics, on Wednesday morning following Tuesday night’s elections in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and elsewhere.

Hylton asked Sabato, who is the director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, about polling concerns in states like Wisconsin being so off — Democratic socialist Francesca Hong was narrowly defeated in the gubernatorial primary race by moderate candidate David Crowley despite as much of a 23-point lead in polling.

Sabato said concern over polling has always existed and it’s the least of his concerns. He then laid out a simple three-point plan for Democrats to take control of Congress in the midterm elections.

Democrats should be hyper-focused the Iran war, high costs, and “corruption,” According to Sabato. If they do, he said, these elections will be easier than past midterms.

He argued:

Democrats really have a very simple path to victory. It’s sticking to, first, costs, two, war with Iran, three, corruption. Boom! Victory! Okay? This is a midterm election. You’re running against the party controlling things and conveniently, this time for the Democrats, the Republicans control everything. So it’s even easier than it usually is in a midterm election.

Sabato had earlier told people to “ignore” polling out of Wisconsin and Michigan after primary surveys proved little to no help in predicting winners.

“Let’s all remember to ignore primary polls in the future, at least in MI and WI,” he wrote on X.

In Michigan last week, progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic primary for Senate, defeating Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI).
